THE CODE OF THE WEST SUNDAY POST for February 26, 2017

Hey,

This is a strange one, but we need to go here. Life is changing fast and it takes me a while to adapt and judge changes against the Code of the West.

Bikernet has always been international from the beginning and over the years we’ve built closer ties to riders and companies around the world. Hell, Avon Tyres manufacture in England and I toured their factory in the ‘90s. My dad came from England just after WWII.

I have some close friends in Australia and a brother started a shop in South Africa. About 10 years ago a rider in India started to send us whacky road stories. He is now the editor of Bikernet Trikes. A brother from Texas, Bob Kay, started a leather line with products he designed and had made in Pakistan. We ended up changing the name to 5-Ball leathers, creating new designs and now the leather line is part of the 5-Ball Racing Family and I’m ordering a new shipment from Pakistan.

Took me a while to get my head around doing business overseas, but in the end folks is folks and they are all just trying to make a living. Another Code of the West challenge has surfaced and I’ll deal with it at the end.

Remember, “Everything will be alright in the end. If it’s not alright, it’s not the end.”

Let’s hit the news.

NEW TIKE TRIKE PRODUCT OF THE WEEK–

Family motorcycle riding can be more than a good time, it can be a family building experience, but what happens when the teeny tiny members of the family want to get in on the fun – now there’s the Piki Piki Bike!

Lightweight and durable, the Piki Piki bike is the perfect first bike for smaller children who are not yet ready for tricycles, pedal bikes, or heavier balance bikes.

The three-wheel design makes Piki Piki stable and easy to ride, giving toddlers (and bigger kids) a fun way to build coordination and confidence at the same time. Robust and durable, yet lightweight and functional, the Piki Piki bike promotes confidence and improves motor coordination, providing real play value and a smooth transition towards “big kid” bikes.

Bonus points….it looks like the cycles Dad and Mom ride! No assembly required. Just open the box and let the adventures begin! www.gallospencetoys.com

VEGAS BIKEFEST NEWS–
2017 Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame Inductee,
Genevieve Schmitt

Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame announced Genevieve Schmitt as the first inductee into the 2017 class.

Genevieve is one of the leading influencers in women motorcycling today. Over the two decades that she has been working full time as a journalist and publisher in the motorcycle industry, she has written articles and made speeches that have inspired thousands of women to ride motorcycles.

In 2005, Genevieve launched what is now the longest running and most comprehensive resource for female motorcyclists anywhere, WomenRidersNow.com. The online magazine not only provides motorcycling news and reviews from a female point of view, but she is proud of the fact that she created the only media resource where companies can successfully connect with hundreds of thousands of women riders to advertise their products or services.

“I am extremely humbled by this recognition of my work in the media that brings attention to the women’s motorcycling community. All the glory goes to God for giving me the talent; to the riders, women and men, who read my articles; and all the powersports companies that have supported my efforts over the years”, says Schmitt.

Prior to launching WomenRidersNow.com Genevieve conceived the idea for Woman Rider magazine, a national print publication where, for the first time, readers could see on the pages of a professional magazine, women of all ages riding any brand of motorcycle. Over the years Genevieve has contributed articles to nearly every motorcycle magazine providing one of the early female voices in motorsports journalism.

“Genevieve is a pioneer in the industry, hobby and sport of women motorcycling. She has reached beyond the stereo-types and has brought female riders to the fore front. As the fastest growing demographic of new riders, Genevieve has shown that women can have the same amount of passion and enthusiasm for motorcycle riding as any man”, says Mindi Cherry, Vice President and Event Manager of Las Vegas BikeFest.

Las Vegas BikeFest, in partnership with Branscombe Richmond, launched the Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame at the 2016 rally. “The Hall of Fame is designed to honor the iconic ambassadors, influential heroes and people who put their interests above and beyond for the motorcycle community. This honor celebrates, illuminates and preserves the rich tradition of motorcycling in America”, says Cherry and Richmond, curators of the Hall of Fame.

A ceremony to honor the inductees will be held on Friday, October 6 at the 17th Annual Las Vegas BikeFest held in Downtown Las Vegas. Additional inductees will be announced soon.

About Las Vegas BikeFest:
The 17th annual Las Vegas BikeFest will be held October 5 – 8, 2017 in the heart of downtown Las Vegas on Fremont East.

ORIGIN
Runnel entered English in the 1570s and combines the noun run (in the sense “small stream”) with the diminutive suffix -el.

THE DREAM IS ALIVE–
We are excited to let you know that you can now watch SHEER WILL on Dream Racer|Television.

Although this film was shot in an older format style, the story is one of the best we have ever seen.

Climbing to height over 8,000 meters / over 26,000 feet without the use of bottled oxygen has been achieved by only a few men, and Michael Groom was the first Australian to Summit the 4 highest peaks in the World without oxygen support, where failure only results in death.

Michael was also part of the disastrous 1996 Everest attempt in which nine climbers died, Michael was a guide on Rob Hall’s Everest team, and of all of those who reached the summit of the mountain, only he and “Into Thin Air” author Jon Krakauer survived.

What makes this story even more incredible in the fact that Michael lost all of his toes to frost bites in an earlier climb. His recovery was long, painful, and against the odds.

What you are about to watch is, as the title of this documentary implies, how far Sheer Will can take the human mind. This film is nothing short of extraordinary.

Don’t be put off by the older style footage format, as we all know some of the best meals come from the grand’ma pots!!!

SHOWING THE WORLD WHAT AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT– Vice President Pence rolled up his sleeves on Thursday and showed the world what America is all about. After vandalism struck a Jewish cemetery in Missouri, VP Pence made a surprise visit to help with the clean-up effort.

There’s no place in America for hatred, or acts of violence, prejudice, or anti-semitism. That steadfast sentiment was proven this week in Missouri and under President Trump’s leadership it is inspiring the nation.

ANOTHER CODE OF THE WEST CHALLENGE– If you are one of 11,000 convicted drunk drivers in Minnesota, your car whereabouts are currently known through GPS tracking. Apparently, Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials had implemented a GPS location-tracking for interlock ignition systems without the backing of the state legislature.

Representative Peggy Scott (R-Andover) says that when the legislature passed the interlock law for Minnesota drunk drivers in 2010 there was no intention to grant state officials the power to use GPS to track motorists’ whereabouts. She adds that this is overreach and may indeed be unconstitutional. A bi-partisan group of lawmakers including co-sponsor Rep. Scott, have put forth Minnesota bill H.F.179 which would stop the use of GPS tracking of DUI offenders who use an ignition interlock device.

If a motorist is convicted of drunk driving, he or she may be required to hardwire an ignition interlock device into their vehicle. Convicted drunk drivers must blow into an interlock device to check for sobriety every time he or she gets behind the wheel to drive. If the driver cannot prove sobriety, the DPS can locate the driver immediately using the GPS signal and then notify law enforcement.

Ignition interlock systems, including Minnesota’s, don’t allow a vehicle to be started, let alone moved, if sobriety isn’t verified. The issue with GPS isn’t tracking convicted DUI offenders who might be driving drunk again, it is that DPS is tracking the movements of these motorists regardless of their state of sobriety.

According to DPS spokesperson Bruce Gordon, having the instant reporting of user violations allows the department to take immediate action instead of having to wait 30 days to look at the driver’s logs which had been the case previously. While the real-time reporting is required for all the interlock devices, Gordon said that DPS does not use or store data that has been gathered beyond the day of tracking.

H.F.179 co-sponsor Rep. John Leach (DFL-St.Paul) says the state has dealt with challenges on citizen’s privacy before concerning data gathered through cellphone tracking, police body cameras and automatic license plate readers or ALPRs. He says he’s frustrated and adds, “I’m extremely surprised we’ve reached a point where not only were those cautionary tales not heeded, but they were in fact seemingly summarily ignored by initiative to include tracking information with a program that was not in any way intended to go in that direction when it was originally passed.”

One of the five companies that is allowed to handle interlock devices in Minnesota, Smart Start, has repeated in numerous news reports that the company is opposed to GPS tracking of DUI offenders.

As of Thursday, February 23, H.F. 179 has survived two committees in the Minnesota Legislature. It was passed out of the House Public Safety and Security Policy and Finance Committee and now will go before the Government Operations Committee. In this week’s hearing, Rep. Scott mentioned that she has learned since proposing the bill, that the GPS can actually be turned off the device but instant reporting can still occur which allows DPS to work with the convicted DUI motorist more quickly.

During this week’s hearing, two other groups had representatives that testified for the bill. An ACLU spokesperson said that the expansion of the GPS tracking constitutes a search under the 4th Amendment. A spokesperson for the Minnesota Criminal Defense Lawyers testified that his group had concerns that subpoenas could be obtained to use GPS information on the location-tracking interlock devices in other types of court cases that have nothing to do with the DUI conviction.

The bill plus two amendments were approved out of committee. The first amendment would allow all DUI convicted Interlock participants to be informed that their devices are wireless and have the capability of GPS tracking. The second amendment to the bill would allow GPS-tracking to be turned on by court order if needed.

Minnesota lawmakers are right in legislating this change in the state’s DUI law. The state’s desire to track every movement of DUI offenders – particularly knowing that some of those convicted weren’t necessarily driving impaired – should never be at the expense of individual constitutional rights. In next week’s part two, we will explore an even more draconian wave of DUI laws that involve physically checking in twice per day.

SS Trikes Wins Ingenuity Award at J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Chicago–The Progressive International Motorcycle Show hosted the Chicago round of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show where SS Trikes took home the coveted Ingenuity Award.

February 24, 2017 – At the conclusion of the largest custom bike show series in America, the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show, SS Trikes won the coveted Ingenuity Award for their big-wheel, big-tire trike.

The Ingenuity Award is given to the builder who provides the greatest innovation to his or her build. The judges at the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder found the S&S X-Wedge powered trike to be unique in design and style.

The J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder is an elite-level custom motorcycle builder competition featuring more than 350 motorcycles and the largest tour-wide awards in the U.S., totaling over $100,000 in cash and prizes. The competition ran through all seven IMS shows.

“I want to thank all the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show team for hosting the show and allowing me to showcase the SS Trike technology,” explained Jason Nieman, president. “I enjoyed the unbelievable number of enthusiasts who talked to me about our Big-Wheel trike and enjoyed the results of what we put our heart and soul into.”

The trike is filled with innovation. It’s constructed like a race car and features a 2-speed automatic transmission with lockup torque converter, large displacement S&S 117ci engine, shaft drive, large custom wheel and inverted front suspension.

The SS Trike is designed to accommodate comfortably a variety of enthusiasts from 5’ to 6’2” tall. In just 5 minutes or so, an enthusiast can select two different seat heights and three different foot control locations.

The custom production trike is available in primary colors. Additional options include graphics, Wire-Plus digital speedo, air-ride suspension, a solo seat with enclosed trunk, multiple trim treatments and a black or polished engine.

About SS Trikes

SS Trikes are designed and manufactured in Rudolph, Wi by a team headed up by Jason Nieman. SS Trikes, http://sstrikes.com/, are known for their design, which is derived from Mattel’s Big Wheel trikes from the 1970’s.

The automatic SS Trike is in production and delivering Trikes. Each trike is built to the customer’s personal taste and is delivered within 90 days of receiving the order.

The SS Trike resembles the classic “Big Wheel” Chopper-style design that we all rode as a kid, which is sure to put a smile on your face no matter how old a kid you are.
