Jindabyne is a town in southeast New South Wales, Australia that overlooks Lake Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains. Classed, as a service town for the ski resorts Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass, in summer Lake Jindabyne is a popular sailing, walking and fishing destination. It has also been the base for the past few years for participants in the Great Race, a 23 year old event pitting mates against mates and marques against marques.
This year there were 132 entrants, roughly divided between Harley-Davidsons and Indians, with the two camps competing to become the overall winning marque. Very early models competing included Chris Wells riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson and Danny Guest on a 1915 Indian.
The event is run over two days and encompasses timed sections, navigational challenges and a rolling race – which is exactly what it sounds, – rolling down hill in neutral, with the engine switched off and the one who rolls the farthest declared the winner.
