THE QUICK AND DIRTY SUNDAY POST for October 7, 2018

Hey,

Life is so interesting. I rode over by the LA airport yesterday to attend a memorial for Paul Larquier, who once was the boss of Santee and worked for Jammer Cycle and was a member of the Jammer Cycle streamliner team.

Travis, another member of the Jammer Streamliner Team rode with me with a young engineer and bike builder. We hooked up with the family in a nice home on the east side of Hawthorn. We ate fresh made on the spot tacos and discussed Paul’s life with his daughter.

Then we rode down to a marina where several old bikers live including Harold, who was the boss of the Berdoo Hells Angels in the ‘60s. He’s 81 and living with his wife on their sailboat. We talked old times and Frankie, my grandson rode over and hooked up with us.

Travis taught Frankie how to kickstart his old Panhead. It’s strange. We’re getting very old and the kids are having kids. What’s it all mean, goddammit! Let’s hit the news.

DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMEN’S RIDE–Once a year over 650 cities and 120,000 riders worldwide come together to embark on their own Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to benefit the Movember Organization in support of men’s prostate cancer research and male suicide prevention.

To show support of this special event, Blue C provided overall event management in association with Ducati of Newport Beach. We also worked with this year’s Grand Marshall to create an event video for social media along with initial campaign development and visual direction, partnership management and enthusiast outreach.

Eric Morley, Co-Founder of Blue C said, “We are honored each year to provide ongoing visual brand development, brand storytelling and ongoing digital and event direction with the objective of consistently being well received, increase rider participation and be better than the previous year.” The creative and account services team at Blue C continues to rise to the occasion with their ongoing dedication and insightful creative capabilities.

Orange County’s ride certainly delivered on the commitment of riders, quality of the ride and a majestic ending destination of the Monarch Beach Resort located in Dana Point, California. With a total 530 registered riders and a charity donation of over $40,000, the third year of the Orange County DGR ride rose to become the third largest in the United States. Blue C and Ducati of Newport Beach started developing and organizing this event in June and have supported this ride for the last three years.

This year’s Grand Marshall, Doug McLaughlin, CEO of Nobleman Magazine, alongside last year’s Grand Marshall, the legendary Steve Caballero, led the massive snake-like group of riders from Ducati Newport Beach through the Back Bay to Vans Shoes Corporate Headquarters down Pacific Coast Highway to the four star Monarch Beach Resort. The afternoon reception was spent at Monarch Beach Resort’s Grand Lawn overlooking the main pool and Pacific Ocean.

Additionally, the Monarch Beach Resort provided a gift attached to each rider’s handlebars. In continued support of DGR, the Resort provided the following offers for returning guests who mention the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride:
Special DGR Monarch Beach Resort Offers

• One-day preview pass invitation where riders can explore The Club at Monarch Beach Resort including celebrated dining, oceanfront golf, restorative services at Mirava Life in Balance Spa, exclusive beach club access, personal Member concierge services, and social events to compliment your Orange County lifestyle.

• Bourbon Steak Orange County, A Michael Mina Restaurant where each rider is invited to spend $100 per person and receive complimentary dessert for each person in the party.

TEXAS DREAMING–
Use your Bandit Mind Meld Magic and have either Baker or Revtech send me a 6/4 with kicker or a 5/4 with kicker, for me to do a comprehensive, long term, Texas road test. See a RFR Texas Road Test is different than other states road tests!

Think I’m gonna pull the bags off for a while & see if I can find a set of upswipe fishtails to run. Of course I’ll leave the luggage rack on, to strap my Dayroll too. She’s a Shovelhead, she loses parts occasionally. Got to carry stuff.

I was surprised I didn’t get any feedback on my music recommendation, not even a “she’s cute.”

THE CANTINA HISTORY LESSON–
This has been around before but is really relevant in light of recent BS.–Joe Smith

This is Priceless! Note reference to the “Main Stream Media”…73 years ago

What is meant by the modern term referred to as “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS”…The definition is found in 4 telegrams at the Truman Library and Museum in Independence , Missouri .

The following are copies of four telegrams between President Harry Truman and General Douglas MacArthur on the day before the actual signing of the WWII Surrender Agreement in September 1945.

The contents of those four telegrams below are exactly as received at the end of the war – not a word has been added or deleted!

(1) Tokyo , Japan 0800-September 1,1945

To: President Harry S Truman
From: General D A MacArthur

Tomorrow we meet with those yellow-bellied bastards and sign the Surrender Documents, any last minute instructions?

(2) Washington , D C 1300-September 1, 1945

To: D A MacArthur
From: H S Truman Congratulations, job well done, but you must tone down your obvious dislike of the Japanese when discussing the terms of the surrender with the press, because some of your remarks are fundamentally not politically correct!

(3) Tokyo , Japan 1630-September 1, 1945

To: H S Truman
From: D A MacArthur and C H Nimitz
Wilco Sir, but both Chester and I are somewhat confused, exactly what does the term politically correct mean?

(4) Washington , D C 2120-September 1, 1945

To: D A MacArthur/C H Nimitz
From: H S Truman
Political Correctness is a doctrine, recently fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and promoted by a sick mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of shit by the clean end!

Now, with special thanks to the Truman Museum and Harry himself, you and I finally have a full understanding of what ‘POLITICAL CORRECTNESS’ really means…..

THE PUNISHMENT SOCIETY GROWS–Ivan Sever, Life Member and former NMA Massachusetts State Coordinator, has never been one to sit back and just take it. About a year ago, the Salem City Council voted to lower the speed limit on Swampscott Road, a busy route driven frequently by Sever, from 40 to 25 mph. No speed study, no discussion, not even any checking to see if the lower limit on the two-lane road met state DOT requirements and was enforceable.

Ivan pointed out the safety concerns in a local news report this past June, noting that many drivers are still going 40 mph while others abide the 25 mph posting. “It makes people impatient. They may try to pass and it’s a no-passing zone.”

Salem police traffic commander Lt. Robert Preczewski responded that, “I don’t think it’s clear cut,” when questioned about the legality of the speed limit change. Sever had his own response:

1. If the city didn’t get the state’s approval, the 25 mph speed limit is not enforceable. That’s not confusing.
2. The purpose of petitioning the state is not to get an approval of a speed randomly picked out of a hat. The purpose is to notify the state of [an] intended speed study so that Mass DOT can ensure the study is conducted according to the guidelines.

In correspondence with the NMA, Ivan added, “The real issue is in 2016 Mass legislation enacted a law giving local bureaucrats more power over local speed limits but no accountability. Although MassDOT created very specific guidelines, the state legislation provided no mechanism to ensure the guidelines are actually followed.” The mechanism in this case is called Ivan Sever who triggered the local report.

The Swampscott saga doesn’t end there. Weeks after the linked story was published, Salem had taken no action to correct the illegal speed limit despite active campaigning by Sever to rectify the situation. Ivan contacted Fred Zotos, a local attorney who took on the case pro bono. He filed a complaint against the City of Salem in US District Court. One month later, Salem restored the legal 40 mph postings.

The case is still open. Salem never admitted to any wrongdoing and has filed a motion to dismiss the Sever complaint. Zotos is currently working on his opposition motion.

The last words (for now) belong to Ivan, motorist advocate extraordinaire:

“It really bugs me that such a simple engineering decision (the results of a speed study) is now so political. Not just on Swampscott Road but practically everywhere. Of course one big reason is that as long as people keep complaining about “the speeders,” cities and towns will look for ways to placate their constituents. And make money in the process.

For a number of reasons it’s crucial that the City of Salem agrees they replaced the signs on Swampscott Road illegally. One of the reasons is that it would keep them from putting up speed limit signs whenever they feel like it and then accuse motorists of not following the law.

Fighting for motorists rights is time consuming and expensive, but I think we all agree there is no doubt in any of our minds how important this is.”

Russia scoops 2018 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building–
98 bikes, 85 competitors, 30 countries

Russian customizer Zillers Garage scored a convincing first place in the 13th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at INTERMOT Customized, Cologne, Germany, October 7.

With ‘Insomnia’, Zillers’ Yamaha SR 400 based masterpiece, rising star Dmitry Golubchikov takes the coveted title of Avon World Champion of Custom Bike Building for the next two years, and becomes the first winner of the AMD World Championship from Eastern Europe.

Sponsored by leading custom tire manufacturer Avon Tyres, the Freestyle class at the AMD World Championship is internationally recognized as being the premier showcase for originality, innovation craftsmanship and advanced custom motorcycle design and engineering.

In a very broad international spread of top honours, second place and first reserve champion went to Omar Jumiran, all the way from Malaysia for ‘BoneX’, his exquisite handbuilt, race-inspired AJS 350 engined drag style one-off special. Omar qualified to compete at the AMD World Championship as a result of his win at MotoNation, Kuala Lumpur in 2017, one of the international network of AMD’s official affiliate custom bike shows.

Third place and second reserve champion went to Károly Orkonyi from Hungary for ‘Speedster King’, his futuristic 1700 cc handmade rigid.

Altogether 51 bikes competed in Freestyle, with no less than 13 different countries featuring in the top 20.

Fourth place went to Pavel Malanik from the Czech Republic for ‘Beast of Brooklands’, a handmade one-off replica of what itself was a handmade one-off JAP engined racer, of over a century ago, that was built by North London Garage (NLG) in England to hold the then World Landspeed record.

Fifth place was taken by 2013 AMD World Champions Don Cronin and Mick O’Shea of Medaza Cycles (Ireland) with ‘Stechmücke’, a remarkable re-imagining of a 1981 MZ250 – complete with 1920s art deco streamliner styling.

In total 98 bikes competed at this year’s AMD World Championship, entered by 85 individual competitors from 30 different countries including as far afield as the United States, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia and India.

The ever-popular Modified Harley-Davidson World Championship was won by Julian von Oheimb of One Way Machine with ‘Silver Storm’, a 1450 cc 2001 Softail Deuce.

In an extremely high quality field, this year’s Retro Modified win was taken by VM Cycles of Italy, with a 1942 WLA SV 750 cc engined Flathead with a BSA military style M20 drivetrain – almost entirely handmade with stainless steel and brass accessories.

Also flying the flag for Italy, the Cafe Racer class was won by FMW Motorcycles with ‘Hurakan’, an S&S Superstock Avon Tyre-shod 1968 Shovelhead.

In the demanding Street Performance class, the win was taken by Paul Milbourn of the United Kingdom with ‘Titanium V’ – an 1100 cc Moto Guzzi weighing in at just 155 kg.

In an AMD World Championship first, respected German retailer Detlev Louis sponsored a public choice vote, with the win taken by Szajba’s Garage of Poland – a clear choice taking more than 10 percent of the hundreds of votes cast.

Staged as the lead feature at ‘INTERMOT Customized’, the show-within-a-show concept created to showcase custom industry excellence at INTERMOT (Cologne, Germany, October 3-7 2018), the AMD World Championship was widely praised by exhibitors and visitors alike as delivering an inspirational and aspirational show environment that champions the outstanding craftsmanship and innovation of the international custom motorcycle market.

In addition to the AMD World Championship bikes, the 150,000 plus high-mileage riders that visit INTERMOT Customized saw presentations of custom excellence from a wide range of exhibitors that included several of the leading OEMs such as Harley-Davidson, BMW, Yamaha and Kawasaki.

Additional Hall 10 features included displays from popular Sprint race series, a Garage Area featuring customizing, technical and workshop displays, and history and memorabilia from the Ace Café, London.

The 14th AMD World Championship will be staged at INTERMOT Customized at the Cologne Exhibition Center (Koelnmesse) in October 2020.

China reportedly infiltrated Apple, Amazon and other US companies using ‘spy’ chips.

“The attack by Chinese spies reached almost 30 U.S. companies by compromising America’s entire technology supply chain.”

Engadget October 4, 2018

China carried out a “hardware-hack” on Amazon, Apple and an estimated 30 US Technology companies. Data center hardware used by Apple and Amazon may have been fitted with surveillance micro-chips by Chinese server company Super Micro, claims Bloomberg in a new report. Almost 30 US companies reportedly fell prey to the “attack,” with the chips used to snatch intellectual property and trade secrets, according to Bloomberg’s anonymous government and corporate sources. The report notes that no “consumer data is known to have been stolen.”

Apple has flat-out denied the allegations, claiming that it did not find the chips, while Amazon said it had “found no evidence to support claims of malicious chips or hardware modifications.” As for Super Micro, it denied that it introduced the chips during the manufacturing phase. And China’s foreign ministry has said that the country “is a resolute defender of cybersecurity.”

That just leaves Bloomberg, which claims the issue was first discovered by Apple in May, 2015 and quietly reported to the FBI. Later, Amazon independently found the chip and also informed US authorities. Apple reportedly severed ties with Super Micro in 2016. A follow-up investigation was then conducted, which reportedly remains open to this day. Apple and Amazon, however, both deny working with the FBI on a top-secret probe. The report lays the blame for the so-called “hardware hack” squarely at the feet of China’s regime.

Apple — which tends to refrain from issuing direct responses to specific reports — has taken the unorthodox step of categorically denying Bloomberg’s revelations. “Over the course of the past year, Bloomberg has contacted us multiple times with claims …of an alleged security incident at Apple,” the company said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. “We have repeatedly and consistently offered factual responses, on the record, refuting virtually every aspect of Bloomberg’s story relating to Apple.

“On this we can be very clear: Apple has never found malicious chips, “hardware manipulations” or vulnerabilities purposely planted in any server. Apple never had any contact with the FBI or any other agency about such an incident. We are not aware of any investigation by the FBI, nor are our contacts in law enforcement.”

This isn’t the first time a Chinese company has come under fire for surveillance in the US. Earlier this year, Donald Trump signed an act banning government personnel from using Huawei and ZTE devices, following years of concerns over the companies’ ties to China’s government.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–
brio

[bree-oh]
noun
1.

vigor; vivacity.

QUOTES

Although Stopsack had probably never before directed such an undertaking, he performed his duties with brio, skillfully heaping verbal abuse on the manacled inmates …

— James Morrow, Galápagos Regained, 2014

ORIGIN

The Italian noun brio comes from Spanish brío “energy, determination,” ultimately from Celtic brigos “strength” (compare Middle Welsh bri “honor, dignity,” Old Irish bríg “strength, power”). Celtic brigos derives from Proto-Indo-European gwrigos, a derivative of the very common and complicated Proto-Indo-European root gwer- “heavy,” which has many variations, including gwer?-, gwer?u-, and gweri-. From gwer?- and its variants, English has “grave, gravid, gravity” from Latin; the prefixes baro- “heavy” and bary- “deep” from Greek; and guru from Sanskrit. From gwrigos, the same source as Celtic brigos, Germanic derives krigaz “fight, strife,” German Krieg “war.” Brio entered English in the 18th century.

WAR MOVIE OF THE WEEKEND–
A 1950s atom bomb bunker or a Zombie Apocalypse Prep Pack sounds great. Learn how to find and drink clean water, grow your own food for canned storage, use solar electricity and other means to sustain your remote plot of fortress in the woods. Bring more than just a gun. Bring engineering textbooks and medical textbooks. Survival books by British SAS and US Marines. Learn to exercise while locked up in a small self made bunker.

JJ Abrams made a movie about an Apocalypse enthusiast with a bunker.

Titled “10 Cloverfield Lane”.

10 Cloverfield Lane is a 2016 American science fiction psychological horror film which follows a young woman who, after a car crash, wakes up in an underground bunker with two men who insist that an event has left the surface of Earth uninhabitable.

BIG WEEK AHEAD—Hang on, as I work on getting a pickup and have my first 4-wheeler in several months. Then I’m hauling ass to Carson City, Nevada to the Paughco headquarters to pick up the Salt Torpedo. You’ll start seeing reports right away. We need to be on the salt next August. Actually, I’m going to look into making runs on El Mirage dry lake, but they don’t have a class for me.

Okay, so we are also working on getting Frankie’s front end on his FXR and get that puppy on the road. I spoke to Tim at Custom Cycle Engineering last week and we have a plan with Legends suspension systems for cartridge inserts. We will bring you a report on this 39 mm front end build unless he rolls with a springer from Paughco. Seems the classic choppers are coming back.

I need to move my new/old Panhead and start to design a lift for working on that 132-inch monster. Mil Blair attended Paul’s memorial and we discussed streamliners, rules and power. I’m still swimming with thoughts regarding the last couple of days. Some of these effort split up friends. It’s ironic. Nothing we do really means anything. If you always remember that, it puts life into perspective. Be kind and respectful always, there’s no reason to do anything else.

Competition is bullshit, a waste of time and stress. As long as it’s fun, okay. Just do your thing and enjoy each day and each friend.

And of course, Ride Free Forever.
