I’m going to rattle down some facts here that will be shocking and revealing, but who knows if they make much sense. I had a meeting about the California Air Resources Board new motorcycle rules yesterday. The California Air Resources board is mandated (there’s that word again) by the Governor to create a state with Zero emissions by 2030.
I think someone ought to make a movie around my book “Sam ‘Chopper’ Orwell,” quick, before it’s too late. So help me with numbers from other states. I attended Daytona Bike Week and it seemed jammed to me. What’s the deal? Where are we going?
A brother wrote me recently, “I’m trying to make sense of the motorcycle industry.” On the other hand read the news. There are conflicting reports. Hang On!

Man Shot By Dancing FBI Agent Hurt Worse Than Originally Thought–
An FBI agent dancing wouldn’t ordinarily be news. At least, not for most of us. While the typical Bureau man is supposedly stiff as they come, that’s a stereotype as all kinds join the FBI. If the Marines can’t beat the fun-loving out of people, I seriously doubt the FBI can.
But it becomes news when a dancing FBI agent loses his weapon, and then while retrieving it, discharges the firearm into an innocent bystander, then wanders off as if nothing happened.
Especially now that it appears the man shot was injured a whole lot worse than originally thought.
The attorney for the man shot at a Denver bar over the weekend by a dancing FBI agent says the injury to his client’s leg is much worse than first reported.
Attorney Frank Azar says the gunshot hit a main artery and his client could have bled to death. The owners of Mile High Spirits and Distillery say it was one of their quick-thinking security guards who took off his belt and applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg.
However, witnesses dispute the claim that it was a bar security guard who applied the tourniquet. A witness told Denver7’s Lance Hernandez that he used his belt to apply the tourniquet, and he is not employed, nor is he affiliated with the bar in any capacity.
There is now a chorus of growing outrage among the public as the agent waits to see if he will face charges in the case. The agent’s name is Chase Bishop, 29. He was visiting Denver, but works out of Washington D.C.
Some experts say after reviewing the videos several times, the case rises to the level of felony assault. Denver police say they are waiting on laboratory tests to determine whether Bishop will face charges.
Drinking may well also explain why Bishop decided to just walk away from the incident rather than checking on the crowd to see if he’d injured anyone with his negligent discharge.
I’m just glad the man injured in the incident is OK, even if he has to get surgery for arterial damage. He could easily be dead, after all. My prayers are with him for a full and speedy recovery.

TRAILBRAKING EXPLAINED–

What is trail braking?
Most riders ask this question at some point in their careers, and there are literally chapters written about it. Those are the kind of chapters that tend to describe, in detail, how a watch is made to someone who just wants to know what time it is.
Trail braking is a method of navigating a corner that involves continuing to apply braking force after initiating the turn-in to the corner instead of completing all of the braking while the motorcycle is still vertical and before beginning the turn.
In trail braking, the rider continues using the brakes (either front or both front and rear) while leaning into the turn and gradually reduces braking pressure as the lean angle increases. Eventually, the braking pressure trails off to nothing, ideally about the time the rider has almost achieved maximum lean angle and is approaching the apex of the turn.
Racers use trail braking all the time to extract maximum performance. Notice that in this photo pro racer Travis Wyman has two fingers on the brake lever even as he’s deep into the turn.

Why trail brake?
Personal preference is a strong motivator. It helps to transfer weight onto the front tire, which can be advantageous. It also compresses the forks, which in turn reduces trail, making the bike easier to turn. In the same vein, reducing speed also reduces the motorcycle’s turning radius.
Perhaps the biggest benefit for street riders is the ability to continue slowing if needed, as the brakes are already applied, minimizing rider reaction time — particularly helpful on roads not well known to the rider.
Letting off the brakes gradually eases the transition back onto the throttle.

What are the risks associated with trail braking?
Trail braking can be difficult to learn and practice, especially for novice motorcyclists. Trail braking also loads the front tire heavily with braking and steering forces, but when done incorrectly, trail braking has the potential to overload the tire with those forces. Front tire slippage, especially mid-turn, is generally a bit more difficult to recover from than rear slippage.
Trail braking, like many other techniques used in motorcycling, may prove more effective for some riders, motorcycles, and roads than others. Probably the best place to learn trail braking is in one of the track-based riding schools that teach the technique or at a track day, with the advice of a more experienced control rider.
Trail braking can be learned or practiced on the street, with a caveat: aggressively trail braking on the street may reduce your safety margin considerably, especially if road surfaces are not ideal and other vehicles are present. Try it out (safely!) and see if it works for you.

Apologies, this is just coming to you now. My inbox can be a mess at times.
Anyway, you make a fair point. But what’s freedom mean, especially to a young rider who instead of following the law follows some twisted notion of bravery and ends up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life because of a minor crash that he could have walked away from.
There’s that argument – and the fact that all of us, insurance or no, will be required to subsidize that choice through additional health care needs that just didn’t have to be.
It’s like seat belts. The freedom to not wear a seat belt is trivial compared to the costs, and I’m okay with mandating that, too.

Appreciate your time. There is so much more to this issue than meets the initial eye. Actually helmets would be more beneficial in cars. Most of the injuries in cars are head injuries. On the other hand helmets can cause accidents and neck injuries on motorcycles. And the issue of injury protection seems to take precedent over accident avoidance. Freedom to choose is still the best option. It is still the option in 36 states and most of them have less accidents and deaths than the states with mandatory laws.
There’s that word: Mandatory or mandate. Scary.
I’m struggling with the California Air Resources Board and new motorcycle emissions rules. The Governor has mandated Zero emissions by 2030. Only electric motorcycles will be allowed and no more barbecues. Why don’t you question Climate Change and Global Warming? Why don’t you guys cringe when an elected official wants to mandate anything. How about Zero violence in the media and movies. Scary.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER HEALTH WARNING–Officials urged people to throw out pre-cut melon sold in major supermarket chains after a salmonella outbreak linked to the fruit sickened 60 people in five states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday.
Caito Foods, LLC recalled its packages of pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut medley products containing these melons after people reported feeling ill after eating the fruits, the CDC said in a news release. The fruit was produced in a facility in Indianapolis, Ind.
Officials said people reported contracting salmonella after eating pre-cut melon between April 30 and May 28. At least 31 people were hospitalized.
The melon was sold in plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon. They were distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.
Caito Foods has seized production and distribution of the melons. Consumers are urged to throw away pre-cut melon that fall within the recall.
People with salmonella may develop symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. At times, infections could be fatal, especially in young children or elderly people. The bacteria can also cause arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis on rare occasions.

The optimistic book, which Amazon lists for online download at $14.99, rejects doom-and-gloom descriptions of the status quo. Progress is being made but overlooked, it says. The divisions between people are based on instincts and assumptions — which can be done away with if we face them head on.

Prison Industries are a Big Reason For This.
Florida makes a lot of money from inmate labor.
Florida also is the slowest state to reinstate Civil Rights to inmates who have completed their sentence for criminal offenses.

Our mother has stage 4 uterine cancer. That feels so weird to say. It was so sudden and came out of nowhere. When we first found out, my sisters and I had different reactions. Laurie cried. Rachel was sick to her stomach. And I was in denial, maybe I still am. But we all thought the same thing. Our mother will get through this and we will support her every step of the way.
She is recovering from her extensive surgery, which will take about 6 weeks. After that comes chemotherapy. We honestly don’t know what to expect. We do know its going to get worse before it gets better. My mom will have to go through the most emotional and physical journey she’s ever been on.
During recovery and chemo treatments, she will be out of work. And like many of us, she doesn’t have a savings or emergency fund. Though my sisters and I will be taking care of her and doing what we can, we can’t afford it all. She needs help with her medical bills, rent, utilities, hair prosthesis and the cost of everyday living. So, if your able to donate it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount would help!

SONNY ANGEL R.I.P.
With a heavy heart and deep sadness, we must pass word that Trailblazers Hall of Famer, Samuel “Sonny” Elbert Angel ll, passed away on June 3, 2018 at 10:02am. Sonny was 93 years old.
At this time, the Angel family wishes to thank everyone who knew, loved and supported Sonny over the years. He is back together with his loving wife, Christin, who passed in 2011. Sonny/s Celebration of Life will take place at Sonny Angel Motorcycles in National City, at a date and time to be determined. It will be posted. Sonny was a good friend of the Emde family and his shop was located just 5 blocks from Floyd Emde’s shop. Please feel free to share the news. He was a legend, and will be missed dearly.

Joseph P. Roberts, age 87, died May 25, 2018 at the Frontier Assisted Living in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was in the Sunland Shamrocks Motorcycle Club in 1959 through 1962. He was the president of the club in 1959 and voted the world’s greatest motorcycle rider in 1962. He raced motorcycles throughout California. Joseph was the stepfather of Mike Konle. BIKERNET SECURITY ALERT–Why you shouldn’t wish people happy birthday on Facebook
Wishing a friend happy birthday on Facebook could get your account hacked and your private info stolen, a new survey has found.
The innocent greeting, combined with other Facebook posts, could allow scammers to glean enough about you to snatch your payment details and other sensitive data.
A whopping 83 percent of people surveyed by Nationwide aged 16-25 said they knew of friends who “overshared” online.
These hardcore social media users “post constantly” and “keep very little secret,” according to the building society.
They share things like their relationship status, health and political beliefs, and holiday updates, which are known to put your home at risk of burglary.
Worse still, 56 percent of respondents said their friends often share their current location.
These types of revealing posts are a goldmine for hackers on the hunt for private info on Facebook’s 2.2 billion users.
And they’ve led to a spate of profile hijackings, with one in five people revealing they’ve had their social media accounts hacked.
Around a quarter of users said they’d had their profiles snatched because they clicked on a link their friends sent them that wasn’t genuine.
Once a hacker gains access to your account, all bets are off.
They can view any information you’ve posted online, even if your privacy settings are on maximum. Hackers can then use this to get hold of bank details and other sensitive data, according to Nationwide.
Of those respondents who said they’d been hacked, 11 percent said either themselves or a friend has lost money as a result and 11 percent had their account duplicated.
“Social media is a great way for people to connect with friends or family, but it’s important to think about the information you are sharing with others, so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands,” said Stuart Skinner, director of fraud at Nationwide.
He continued: “Wishing someone a happy birthday or sharing your location may seem innocent enough, but fraudsters can piece together information from various places, collecting enough to defraud people.
“To protect yourself, check privacy settings so only vetted friends can see updates don’t give away too much information or anything you wouldn’t want a fraudster to see, have a strong password that doesn’t use any of your personal information and stop and think before sharing.”

CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD NOTIONS–I have attached the latest workshop presentations for the four CARB attacks on California motorcycle retailing that have coalesced this year. If you have the time, you might want to review them. They are, in order:
1. Red Sticker Regulatory Proposal that proposes to prohibit Red Sticker uncertified off-road motorcycle sales by model year 2022.
The ARB is going to end this program and create generally more controls against off-road motorcycles.
2. On-Road Motorcycle Rule-Making Kickoff — proposes to lower California’s Highway motorcycle engine emission standard to the 75% lower European standard by 2024.
They will continue to come up with excuses to mandate more strict regulations against new bikes.
3. California’s Anti Tampering Exemption Evaluation Procedures — Aftermarket Parts Procedures Modification Workshop: To encourage lower use of uncertified aftermarket parts (aftermarket and performance parts without an Executive Order) CARB wants to solicit ideas to “update the current procedures to address current technology, standards, and test cycles.
This will take the fine for unregulated parts from $500 to $3,700 per part. If you take a bike with modifications to a shop to sell it and it has a modified exhaust and cam. That’s a $7,400 fine to the bike owner.
4. California’s Racing vehicle Definition Workshop (July 19 & 20, 2017) & CARB Competition Vehicle Update (May 8, 2018).
This is another scary one, basically eliminating any performance parts from public streets.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS– South Austalian Government moves to ban club members from visiting associates in prison.

Motorcycle club members would be banned from visiting their associates in prison, under new legislation to be introduced to South Australia’s Parliament.
The SA Liberals promised a crackdown on drugs in prisons before winning the March state election.
If successful, the bill would create a blanket ban on members of outlaw motorcycle clubs visiting the state’s prisons, to supposedly break the chain of communication between drug traffickers operating inside prisons and their outside connections.
Correctional Services Minister Corey Wingard said the State Government was determined to stop drugs getting into its correctional facilities.
“We know that drugs are getting into prisons and we also know that bikies are operating out of prisons,” he said.
“We want to shut that down, and this legislation will make it nigh impossible for bikies to operate out of prison.
“We’re going very, very hard on this because we have zero tolerance.”
As of April 2018, a total of 162 prisoners known to be associated with outlaw motorcycle clubs were detained in South Australian prisons.
“In its current form, the (Correctional Services Act) provides no power to prevent members of organized crime groups from visiting prisons and associating with prisoners,” Mr Wingard said.
He said police would work closely with the Correctional Services Department to implement the ban.
The bill also looks to introduce workplace drug and alcohol testing for prison officers, staff and contractors.
Mr Wingard said the new testing rules would apply to officers and staff working in private correctional facilities as well, namely the G4S operated Mount Gambier Prison.
“There will be a strict no-tolerance rule for people [prison officers and staff] under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” he said.
“The Public Service Association has been very supportive of this [because] this is going to keep prison officers safe and it’s going to keep drugs out.”
Mr Wingard said he hoped the Labor Opposition would support the bill.

California voters to weigh splitting into three states–A billionaire venture capitalist’s bid to split California into three separate states has earned a spot on the ballot in November’s mid-term elections.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–Swedish Researchers Confirm 20th Century Warming “Does Not Stand Out” Over Past 2500 Years!
A very recent study by Swedish scientists appearing in the journal Climate of the Past examining bottom water temperature (BWT) off the coast of Western Sweden (Gullmar Fjord) going back 2500 years found that “the most recent warming of the 20th century does not stand out.”
Team of researchers led by Irina Polovodova Asteman, University of Gotheberg, produced a record of bottom water temperature off the coast of western Sweden and found 20th century warming “does not stand out.”
The 2500-year winter temperature record was of reconstructed by using a fjord sediment archive from the NE Atlantic and through analysis of oxygen isotopes and other methods. The study was based on an approximately 8-meter long sediment core extracted from the Gullmar Fjord (Sweden).
They found that the Gullmar Fjord d18O record mainly reflects variability of the winter bottom water temperatures with a minor salinity influence.
The researchers also pointed out that a comparison with instrumental winter temperature observations from Central England and Stockholm shows that the fjord record picks up the contemporary warming of the 20th century, see following diagrams:

According to the scientists, the Gullmar Fjord record shows a substantial and long-term warming during the Roman Warm Period (~350 BCE – 450 CE) which was followed by variable bottom water temperatures during the Dark Ages (~450 – 850 CE).
The Viking Age/Medieval Climate Anomaly (~850 – 1350 CE) is also indicated by positive bottom water temperature anomalies, while the Little Ice Age (~1350 – 1850 CE) is characterized by a long-term cooling with distinct multidecadal variability.
The team of Swedish scientists, led by Irina Polovodova Asteman, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, noted “the most recent warming of the 20th century does not stand out, but appears to be comparable to both the Roman Warm Period and the MCA (Medieval Climate Anomaly).”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON NEW RIDER PROGRAM–This summer, Harley-Davidson is turning a mundane rite of passage – the summer internship – into the experience of a lifetime.
Eight social media savvy interns were selected to inspire new riders by taking to the road on a Harley-Davidson and documenting their journey, including: learning to ride at H-D Riding Academy, attending events ranging from motorcycle rallies to music festivals, and of course, experiencing the freedom of riding. Some will even take part in the Motor Company’s 115th Anniversary celebrations in Milwaukee and Prague – and all eight will of course get to keep their bike at the end of the summer.

More than 7,500 people applied from more than 30 countries including South Africa, Russia, China, Argentina, France and Egypt, and shared what freedom meant to them, in 7,500 unique ways, including:
· Grandchildren who were inspired to learn to ride because of a photograph
· Hilarious videos from recent grads who are not quite ready to work in a cubical
· Even a female rider in Pakistan who empowers women every day by teaching them how to ride
Below is information on the eight #FindYourFreedom interns selected:
· Alejandro Garrido (Miami): Alejandro knows there is no greater freedom than riding on two wheels. A former police officer in Brevard County, and current student in Miami, Alejandro is excited to continue building his marketing skills with Harley-Davidson this summer.
· Cassandra “Charlie” Grimbly (Cape Town, South Africa): As an established blogger, Charlie loves to share her passion for travel, fashion and living life to the fullest with her followers. When it comes to riding, Charlie knows there is no better feeling than feeling the breeze and enjoying the sights one can only see on a motorcycle.
· Brock St. Clair (Starkville, Miss.): Whether it’s auditioning for an improv team, acting in a play or hosting a college radio show, Brock is no stranger to taking risks. A rising college senior, Brock has a unique talent for capturing audiences’ attention and sharing his passion for branching out of his comfort zone.
· Emma Ogiemwanye (Long Beach, Calif.): After graduating in 2012, Emma has spent the past four years working in communication for some of the world’s most recognizable tech brands. Before going back to school this fall, Emma looks forward to throwing a leg over a motorcycle and sharpening her social media skills with Harley-Davidson.
· Meghan Glova (Charlotte, N.C.): A recent graduate, Meghan is no stranger to the limelight. With experience as a television news reporter and producer, Meghan is looking forward to bringing her storytelling skills to Harley-Davidson’s social media team. Meghan’s freedom is living life to the fullest, seizing every memory and pursuing her dreams – all while on a motorcycle.
· Anthony Peries (London, England): Growing up in central London, Anthony dreamed of the freedom of riding on the open road. His life motto is simple – “Live to ride, Ride to live” – and it pushes him to continue to inspire the next generation of riders.
· Tessa Otto (Kennan, Wis.): From a small town in the north woods of Wisconsin, Tessa found her freedom through wearing a good pair of boots and exploring the outdoors. Tessa’s passion for Harley-Davidson started with her Dad’s own motorcycle, and now as a rising college senior she is looking forward to hopping on her own two wheels and enjoying the open road.
· Weidong Han (Wuhan, China): Weidong came to the United States when he was 19 years old, and has totaled more than 70,000 Miles on his motorcycle – traveling to 49 of 50 states. A recent graduate, Weidong is looking forward to bring his marketing experience and love for exploring the open road to Harley-Davidson’s social media team.
The internship program, which aims to inspire the next generation of riders, is part of Harley-Davidson’s mission to grow the sport and create two million new riders by 2027.

THERE YOU HAVE IT—I’m flying to Rapid City tomorrow to look at properties in Sturgis, Lead and Deadwood.
There’s a side of me that would love to escape California for another adventure and more freedom. It seems crazy that California, the once hippy-freedom state would become a dictatorship.
What if the state splits up? Would that be wild or what? Life is nuts, and I ordered the book mentioned in the news immediately. I’m going to reach out to SEMA and see if the Hot Rod group is going to help.
They didn’t want to in the past. They just wanted to sell booths at the SEMA show, but I imagine lots of their customers are impacted by these new rules.
As soon as I get back from South Dakota we will be talking to Michael Lichter about the Born Free Show. Paughco will be there and we will kick around our Salt Torpedo and the Bikernet Bagger.
I’m working with a couple of local artists, including one from Disney, on a 30-foot high sculpture for the Wilmington Waterfront. We’ve made some progress.
My grandson is on the road again, but he wants to retune his ThunderMax for more mid-range torque.
I’m excited to report we have reordered a new batch of 5-Ball bandanas from a shop down the street from our Bikernet India News Bureau. Amazing.
So are we making progress? I am, whether they like it or not.
