THINK FREEDOM THURSDAY NEWS FOR November 20, 2014

Hey,

This has been a wild week, very positive, progressive, and many accomplishments were slammed into the “Done” category. Between the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show this weekend and the photo shoot for our 5-Ball Leather Line we were none-stop from last Thursday until today.

The Love Ride faced a decline in attendance, but the Long Beach Show was jammed. The level of new products indicated serious positive thinking within the industry as the government considers smart cars driving themselves.

Last year the David Mann Chopperfest was the biggest ever. It’s coming right up, and I’ll bet it’s slammed this year. So, what’s it all mean? Who the fuck knows?

Let’s see what happens in the news.

The Bikernet News is sponsored in part by the hardworking staff at Cycle Source Magazine and Iron Trader News.

BIKERNET WORKS WITH NOLAN HELMETSNolan sponsored the Bikernet 5-Ball Racing Team with a couple of Helmets for our 2014 season.

Nolan helmets have been manufactured in Bergamo, Italy, since 1972. Started by Lander Nocchi, Nolan is proud of their Italian heritage.

When all the other helmet manufacturers moved their production to the Far East to produce cheaper products, Nolan decided to keep their factory open and all their workers employed.

Their goal is to offer high-value products with innovative features at the best price. Manufacturing in their own factory in Italy allows Nolan to exert extraordinary control over the quality of their products.

They use all the best materials available, and manufacture every part of every helmet in house. They have their own research team and their own test lab to ensure that every helmet conforms to the safety standards of all the markets around the world.

All Nolan helmets are covered by a 5-year limited warranty and all Ncom communications products are covered by a 2-year limited warranty.

Cima International, Inc. has been the agent for Nolan helmets in the United States for more than 30 years. Our office and warehouse is located outside of Chicago. This is where we provide all the services for Nolan helmets:

– We stock all the parts for the models sold in the US for the last decade;
– We perform all the warranty and repair services;
– We install and troubleshoot all the Ncom communication systems.

Nolan Helmets are now distributed through Biker’s Choice.

Can I still use my stock fairing mounted mirrors with the 10-inch bars? Not sure if the grips will be in the way or not? Do I need to use 12-inch bars to
still see the mirrors?

With the 10-inch rise bars, you will need to relocate the mirrors, I had the 13-inch rise on my 5- Ball Bagger and I was able to use the fairing mount mirrors with no problem.

MOTORCYCLISTS GAIN SOME RELIEF FROM CONGRESSIONAL HELMET LAW EFFORTS
Driven by discontent, disillusionment and distrust, American voters saw red in November’s mid-term elections and whisked control of the Unites States Senate to the first Republican majority since 2006 and won additional seats in the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives, as well as favoring the GOP in numerous statewide races and a majority of gubernatorial contests nationwide.

While most of the electorate is simply happy to see an end to a record $4 billion in campaign ads appearing incessantly on television, radio and newspapers, and in in-boxes and mailboxes everywhere, motorcycle riders should be especially glad to have won at least a temporary respite from helmet law threats from Congress and in states where Republicans have remained or gained in governance.

As recently as this summer, the Obama Administration included a thinly-veiled attempt to impose a national helmet law through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) surface transportation reauthorization proposal to Congress, but the measure was derailed by the Republican-controlled House. Three years ago, motorcyclists across America successfully opposed a proposed amendment to S.1449, the “Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011,” that would have called for a National Mandatory Helmet Law for all motorcyclists.

Although federal agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will undoubtedly continue to advance their pro-helmet law agendas, lacking a Democrat majority in either chamber will likely curb enthusiasm for helmet law mandates from Washington, for now.

This is just one report from the Bill Bish, NCOM Coast to Coast monthly news. See the whole report coming soon on Bikernet.

I just don’t get it. Take 100 helmets into a hearing room and have everyone wear them for the hearing. Then asking them if they would like mandatory helmet laws for everyone. It’s nuts.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN--A young woman was pulled over for speeding by a State Trooper. The Trooper walked over to her car window. While he was flipping open his ticket book, the young woman said, “I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Trooper’s Ball.”

He looked at her and replied, ” State Troopers don’t have balls.” She looked at him with wide open eyes, there was a moment of silence. He then closed his book, tipped his Trooper hat, got back in his patrol car and left.

Stealing Time On A Dry Lake Bed

The tale of a pair of late-model Indian Motorcycles and their rookie land speed racing pilots.

This past weekend, stealthily but quickly, Indian motorcycle made history. A new production 2015 Indian Scout and the fabled Chief named “Elnora” tore across the El Mirage dry lake bed in the final Southern California Timing Association event of the season. It was the last chance for the factory to earn an SCTA certified run, and both machines proved their lineage and durability with strong debuts by the rookie land speed riders.

Installation of a Mikuni HSR series flat slide carburetor.

I’ve been riding evolution engines for 24 years. Although the evo offers great reliability, it’s low compression, relatively small 80 inch displacement, does not offer the power of today’s big motors. For smaller motorcycles like Softails and Dynas it’s plenty really, but the big touring bikes are another story. For their weight and wind resistance, even when fitted with a large modern engine, these bikes are dramatically slower than their smaller counterparts. My 1988, 524,000 mile full dress, evo powered, Electra Glide gets around okay. It’ll do the job. But give it a steep mountain grade, heavy head wind, passenger, or combination of these, and it struggles noticeably. In fact you may have to drop a gear on occasion for uncommonly steep grades. In truth, the bike becomes pretty much of a slug.

Harley Davidson three-wheel motorcycles are very popular, but everyone I have talked to has issues with the electric reverse. When engaged it lurches the motorcycle backwards and makes control very difficult especially in tight situations.
Baker Drivetrain has a fix for that in their F6R Reverse System. It works off the factory shift lever in combination with a reverse safety toggle switch. Simply activate the safety switch positioned on the right handlebar while in first gear and shift down to go into reverse.

POLITICAL SOLUTION OF THE WEEK
Say you’re a sick senior citizen and the government says there is no Nursing Home care available for you. So, what do you do?

Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older, a gun (Part G), and four bullets. You are allowed to shoot four politicians.

This means, of course, that you’ll be sent to prison where you’ll receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating & air conditioning, cable TV, library, and all the Health Care you need.

Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? No problem

That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? No problem. They’re all covered.

As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now!

And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you they can’t afford for you to go into a home.

And, you can get rid of four useless politicians while you’re at it.

And now, because you’re a prisoner, you don’t have to pay anymore income taxes.

Is this a great country or what?

Now that we’ve solved your senior financial planning, enjoy your week..

ADAM CROFT PROJECTS UPDATE--I have been putting a lot of focus on a 74 Honda CL360 as of late. I have gotten the majority of the work complete, just a couple small tasks and it will be ready for Ultimate Builder Custom Show in Chicago for 2015.

I combined chopper/bobber styling with a enduro motorcycle to create “DirtBall”. I stripped gas tank, filled the badge mounts and gave it a two tone rattle can paint job. It is also my first gold leaf job. I always gain the upmost respect to those who have mastered his/hers favorite talent after trying new arts. The bike has the ‘70s look for sure.

I also finished this seat today. I have been turned on to the vintage style racing seats. I thought the flames would be a great touch to this seat. This motorcycle is for my daughter (she is 6 years old right now) hence the title on the seat “Duchess of Dirt.” She is 100% all girl who hangs with her brothers easily. The seat is all hand-stitched and Hand FN Made.

I am very lucky…

AUSTRALIAN Bikers to descend on Canberra in protest ‘freedom ride’

Wednesday 19th November 2014

Thousands of bikers from as far away as Broome and Burnie will descend on the national capital of Canberra next week to protest against controversial laws which ban meetings of motorcycle club members.

Organizers are expecting 5000 to 6000 riders to rally outside Parliament House to call on the federal government to override the state laws on the basis they are draconian and unfairly discriminate against social riders.

The “Last Stand Protest Ride” is being organized by state-based chapters of the Freedom Riders Association which says it will be the largest protest bike ride ever staged in Australia.

Hundreds of riders are expected at the Old Canberra Inn on the evening of Sunday, November 30, before the ride to Parliament the next day.

A large group from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania will camp overnight at the Dog on the Tucker Box near Gundagai before riding into Canberra under police escort for the rally at Parliament House.

The mass rally in the ACT follows the protest by about 3000 bikers at the Victorian Parliament late last year.

The association’s website declares it is time to “say no to all new anti-motorcycle and VLAD (Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment) laws”.

The group says social motorcycle riders like the Vietnam Veterans group is being unfairly discriminated against by the laws.

This month the High Court threw out an appeal against Queensland’s controversial laws, which ban more than two declared club members from congregating.

The laws were introduced after an altercation in Broadbeach last year.

The Freedom Riders Association is likening its fight against “draconian laws” to the Eureka campaign.

John Lieberman, the association’s Melbourne-based chief executive, said he resented being treated like a criminal by the laws.

“We are protesting against the anti-association part of the laws,” he said.

“Riders are coming from everywhere, from Broome, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton, we are expecting 5000 to 6000.”

Another organizer, Dale Maggs from South Australia, said the size of the protest could be swelled by anger at the recent High Court rejection of the appeal.

He said social riders in Queensland now had to register their weekend ride with police.

“This is very similar to putting them on a tracking system, it wouldn’t happen for Holden car owners going for a run,” he said.

“It is inherently wrong and, little by little, we are losing our democratic rights, this has to be pulled back.”

Mr Maggs said the group was hoping a federal politician would accept its petition calling for the federal government to override the state-based laws.

“Every protest movement starts by throwing a stone in the pond and hopefully we will get a ripple and people will come to understand these laws,” he said.

“Police already had the laws to arrest criminals but they decided with the stroke of a pen to target all motorcycle riders.”

UNCLE MONKEY The bike build piggy bank is empty. With Christmas and the holiday season pretty much in full swing those extra couple bucks that can be found in the deep recess of pockets are ear market for presents, good food and good drink with family and friends. There are still lots of little things to keep me busy, keep me moving forward now that I have finally turned a corner (knock on wood) on the Road King.

I could sell Snow White and free up a lot of build cash but with the temperatures well below freezing now is not the best time to be selling a bike. In spring, when the riding itch gets going I will put more of an effort to find her a new home (unclemonkey@sohego.com if you’re interested now).

Time in the garage is spent on the costless things that need to be done on the bikes. A day was spent to finally get the exhaust; fender struts and mounts all hanging on a level plain and correctly spaced. More time has been spent whittling away at the side covers to get them where I’m happy.

The difficult side is finally fitting properly with just enough clearance to hopefully keep the paint on it. Now the work load is shifted to the other side to make it match its sister.

When I need a break I move to Mrs. Monkey’s HondaMatic. With the motor out of the frame I’m hoping for a few hours of mild weather to roll it outside to clean it up and make it sparkle. There are always small brackets and doodads that need to be made for both bikes. Some I can do now some will have to wait until my third project, my old South Bend 9C lathe, to be done.

It is that lull in the build. The excitement of new parts from suppliers rolling in is gone, scrambling through catalogs to order the needed part are just wish lists. Even picking up pipe and iron to manufacture parts is on hold. It is the grind away at the build doing what you can while wishing you had that extra twenty in your pocket to buy sandpaper or fasteners because you’ve used every spare one you had.

It is time that has to be spent, the unglamorous time. The time that is conveniently edited out of the TV shows. But it isn’t all gloom. You know in the back of your mind that when the money does come you will be ready for those new parts, you won’t be sitting it spring filing away at something that should have been done. It also means there is time to pull up a stool to the old bench, pour a couple Jack & Cokes with friends, talk about the build, the good times from last summer, the good times to be had next year.

It is time to find that perfect gift that will make someone’s holidays, time to buy that turkey that is way too big but always end up being the perfect size. It is time to drop that free change, those couple bucks that are in your pocket into the hand of a homeless person who needs it. Now it is that time of year when there is no money for bikes but there is money for the things that are truly important in life.

LUCAS XRF RAISES BAR WITH NEW RACING OILS

…NASCAR, INDYCAR AND NHRA TEAMS TESTS POSITIVE

Corona, CA (Nov 19, 2014): Lucas Oil Products, Inc. has launched a new series of top flight oils and lubricants titled XRF (Extreme Racing Formula) targeting the racing market. The launch first announced at SEMA in Las Vegas, has followed 18 months of race testing by some of the premier teams in NASCAR, IndyCar, Off-Road and NHRA.

XRF breakthrough racing technology began development when Lucas Oil partnered with Richard Childress Racing and Earnhardt-Childress Racing Technology (ECR) just over eighteen months ago. XRF is a unique blend of zinc, moly, phosphorous, and special additives. According to Lucas Oil’s CAO and General Manager, Tom Frederickson. “The XRF line are the most effective advanced lubrications available and include utility lubricants such as engine break-in oils, gear oils, greases, and suspension fluids.”

Lucas Oil, Director of Motorsports Tom Bogner said. “XRF is a major breakthrough in racing oils and lubricants. It raises horsepower in the toughest of environments and most importantly provides better engine protection between oil changes. The new zinc technology and special additives offer the racer a thicker and tougher film that can bond with the moving parts in a high-performance engine to help protect them from destructive metal-on-metal contact.”

Technical Director, Mark Negast said. “The key is finding the right base oil and additive chemistry to provide synergistic performance benefits.”

Today Lucas Oil Products is the world leader in the production of high performance lubricants and problem solving additives with 272 unique formulations marketed in more than forty countries around the globe. With the biggest variety of shelf products of any oil company, Lucas Oil is sold in more than 30,000 auto parts stores nationwide and at every truck stop across the USA.

HERNON’s Porosity Sealants (HPS) are a complete line of impregnation sealants that are useful for a wide range of applications. HPS is the solution to leak proofing parts and improving machinability as well as increasing the durability and surface quality of many surfaces. The hardened resins exhibit superior chemical resistance and elevated temperature stability.

The microscopic voids where potential leaks can occur (between metal grains or ceramic plastic molecules) are filled by low viscosity resin during vacuum application or by heat. Sealed micropores cure without shrinkage to form a tough cross-linked thermoset polymer, permanently sealing the piece. Residual adhesive film is rinsed from the part surfaces with water.

From the Sales Floor:
Here are some of the things that a customer did with HPS:

“Taking old camouflage cloths, a customer used HPS 80151, compressed them and the resulting product was so hard that he was able to make it into a knife handle. He also took some sawdust and mixed it with HPS and made a brick. He then took old swatches of leather and coated them with HPS making them hard as a rock. Just goes to show you, you can use HPS with ANYTHING that has pores and make it harder.”

Product Benefits:

High speed processing – impregnation cycles of 25 minutes with 1 to 3 hour room temperature full cures.

Economical – quick room temperature cures coupled with efficient utilization of resin allows for excellent process economics.

Reliability – hardened resign exhibits superior chemical and physical elevated temperature resistance and pressure sealability.

Simplified processing of treated parts – immediate painting or machine of impregnated parts is possible because HPS resign treatment leaves no residue on part surfaces.

RIP, Al DeMarco
June 3, 1934-October 22, 2014

One would think it would be easy but it is truly difficult to write about a friend, a mentor, and an around nice guy. I knew Al for many years dating back to around the mid 1970s. He and his late wife Barb (Pinky) rode up to a bunch of us in the local parking lot where we would meet on Sunday morning to head out for a ride and they asked to join in and the rest as they say is history.

I remember how we thought who the heck is this old couple. They were somewhere around their early 40’s and the rest of us were in our mid 20’s. Quite a difference but in no time at all they fit right in and in fact led more rides than I could ever remember. Some of us rode all over the country and up to Canada with Al and Barb and it always a great time.

Then came that day in 1980. Al had heard about this club called The Drifters that was trying to form a state motorcycle rights organization (a spinoff of the old Connecticut Motorcycle Association run by Pappy) to defeat any attempts at creating a new helmet law. So it was that Al DeMarco, Ed Tyler, Frank Kondash, Hank Piekarski, a few others, and myself would head up to the Waterford Speed Bowl to hear them out as they stood on the back of a flatbed trailer trying to convince the crowd to join them in the fight for individual freedom.

I have to admit up front that we were all somewhat apprehensive about giving our information to these guys but we decided to take the chance and joined. That night we all got phone calls at home urging us to become involved in this new group of freedom fighters.

I and a couple of the others were still concerned about becoming too involved but Al did not hesitate at all. Next thing I knew we were attending meetings at the Drift Inn in New Britain every month and getting more and more involved. Al was our personal leader. He really took the bull by the horns and jumped into the organization full force.

He became a very integral part of the annual toy run organizing riders from the lower Naugatuck Valley and leaving the Valley Diner with upwards of 500 riders heading up to Hartford. We actually needed police assistance just to get us the one mile or so to the Merritt Parkway entrance ramp.

What a sight it was heading down the highway and all you could see in the rear view mirror was a double row of motorcycles all the way to the crest of that long hill before the entrance of the tunnel.

Being as driven as he was Al then became the catalyst for the Shelton Bash, which was held every year at The Holy Ghost Park off Nell’s Rock Road in Shelton and became one of our most successful annual events to this day.

Al and Barb worked tirelessly with their family and friends to make sure that everything went smoothly and everyone had a great time. It all seems so long ago but the bottom line is that Al was a driving force in the success of the CMRA for many years. His mark is forever imprinted on this organization.

I could never thank Al enough for everything he did not only for the CMRA but also for me personally.

But I must try. Thank you Al for your great leadership, your devotion to our cause, and most of all for your wonderful friendship. I am a much richer person for having known you.

Rest in Peace my friend and ride free. You deserve it.

“Discovery will produce other acts of violence, all contributing to a pattern and practice of allowing violence and sexual assault on members of the public… The numerous acts of violence against the citizenry by law enforcement of the City of Ferguson constitute a pattern.”

Ferguson, Mo. – According to a federal lawsuit filed Friday, a woman claims a Ferguson corrections officer raped her while pregnant and in custody last year.

The officer, Jaris Hayden, faces four felony counts including corruption by a public servant, sexual contact with a prisoner, and permitting escape, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Hayden posted a $10,000 cash bond and was released the day he was arrested, Nov. 12. He is scheduled to appear in St. Louis County court for arraignment on Dec. 3.

The woman, whose name was withheld from the suit, is known in court filings as J.W. She was stopped for having expired plates on Oct. 9, 2013, was arrested by the Ferguson police, and was given two tickets for providing a false name during the stop, according to the lawsuit.

Court documents state that while J.W. was being booked in to jail, Hayden told her, “You smell good,” and, “This will teach you a lesson.”

J.W.’s boyfriend subsequently arrived to post bond. At this point Hayden took her from her holding cell and allegedly told her:

“You’re the type of girl that can get me in trouble.”

Then while she was filling out paperwork, Hayden informed her that she had outstanding traffic warrants from other jurisdictions, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

According to court filings, J.W. said, “I will do anything to go home,” which the suit specifies was not in regard to sexual favors.

Hayden then told J.W. to follow him and took her down various hallways leading to a boiler room in the jail, then unbuttoned his pants and allegedly told the victim: “You gonna suck my d—k.”

J.W. then began to perform oral sex on Hayden. After the oral sex, he then took her further back into an even more remote spot in the boiler room, bent her over and “indicated that he was going to have intercourse with her,” according to the suit.

The lawsuit claims J.W. did not resist “because she was afraid.”

The suit goes on to claim that Hayden then allowed J.W. to leave through a side door, telling her to “run and stay close to the building,” most likely in an effort to avoid security cameras.

After getting away, J.W.’s sister took her to an area emergency room, according to the suit.

During the incident, J.W. managed to obtain some of Hayden’s pubic hair, which DNA analysis confirmed to be the suspect’s, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that there is an ongoing pattern of civil rights abuses by the City of Ferguson, including the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson.

The suit alleges, “Discovery will produce other acts of violence, all contributing to a pattern and practice of allowing violence and sexual assault on members of the public… The numerous acts of violence against the citizenry by law enforcement of the City of Ferguson constitute a pattern.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY WAR GAMES CLASS LESSON
As long as we insist on maintaining the “moral high ground” we will NEVER win the war on terrorism! We’re in a conflict in which we absolutely INSIST in playing by the rules against a maniacal group who have NO rules!

Rattlesnake Logic….
After the Boston bombing the news media spent days and weeks trying to determine why these men did what they did. They want to know what America did(!) to make these brothers so angry with us. They want to know why these men were not arrested before they did something so terrible. The media is in a tizzy about this new era of homegrown radicals and about why and how they can live among us and still hate us.

A friend of mine from Texas explained it all to me: “Here in west Texas, I have rattlesnakes on my place, living among us. I have killed a rattlesnake on the front porch. I have killed a rattlesnake on the back porch. I have killed rattlesnakes in the barn, in the shop and on the driveway. In fact, I kill every rattlesnake I encounter.

I kill rattlesnakes because I know a rattlesnake will bite me and inject me with poison. I don’t stop to wonder WHY a rattlesnake will bite me; I know it WILL bite me because it’s a rattlesnake and that’s what rattlesnakes do. I don’t try to reason with a rattlesnake or have a “meaningful dialogue” with it…I just kill it. I don’t try to get to know the rattlesnake better so I can find a way to live with the rattlesnakes and convince them not to bite me. I just kill them. I don’t quiz a rattlesnake to see if I can find out where the other snakes are, because (a) it won’t tell me and (b) I already know they live on my place. So, I just kill the rattlesnake and move on to the next one.

I don’t look for ways I might be able to change the rattlesnake to a non-poisonous rat snake…I just kill it. Oh, and on occasion, I accidentally kill a rat snake because I thought it was a rattlesnake at the time. Also, I know for every rattlesnake I kill, two more are lurking out there in the brush. In my lifetime I will never be able to
rid my place of rattlesnakes.

Do I fear them? Not really. Do I respect what they can do to me and my family? Yes!! And because of that respect, I give them the fair justice they deserve….I kill them… As a country, we should start giving more thought to the fact that these jihadists’ are telling the world their goal is to kill Americans and destroy our way of life. They have just posted two graphic videos on the internet showing them beheading Americans. They are serious. They are exactly like rattlesnakes. It is high time for us to start acting accordingly!

I love this country. It’s the damn government I’m afraid of!

Look who’s new in the White House!

Arif Alikhan, Assistant Secretary for Policy Development for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Mohammed Elibiary, Homeland Security Adviser

Rashad Hussain, Special Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference(OIC)

Salam al-Marayati, Obama Adviser and founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council and is its current executive director

Imam Mohamed Magid, Obama’s Sharia Czar from the Islamic Society of North America Eboo Patel, Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships

This is flat-out scary!

The foxes are now officially living in the hen house…

Now ask me why I am very concerned!

Do you feel OK with this?

How can this happen, and when will we wake up? We are quiet while our Country is being drastically changed!

THE LADIES FIRST ITALIAN MOTORCYCLE TOURWRN is partnering with Hear the Road Motorcycle Tours Italy for our inaugural “Ladies First” Magical Italy Tour taking place May 22–30, 2015. “Ladies First” means men are invited as long as they are accompanied by a woman.

How this tour is different and why you’ll want to attend:
There’s a reason that national and international motorcycle tours for women is an undeveloped market. I believe no one has been able to design a schedule and riding routes to meet the needs of women and their female friends and/or male spouse/partners. Most organized motorcycle tours are developed by men for men. Additionally, many women riders and passengers find the thought of touring overseas intimidating for a variety of reasons.

With input from the owner of Hear the Road Motorcycle Tours Italy, Enrico Grassi—who knows Italy like the back of his hand— along with Blue Strada Tours operators, Bill and Debbie Kniegge (a U.S. based company), we’ve designed an itinerary that blends riding, relaxing and rejuvenating, all while alleviating the factors that can be intimidating.

A downloadable itinerary is available at the end, but in a nutshell, here’s how the tour is designed to meet your needs:

• Two days upon arrival in Italy before starting the tour to adjust our bodies for jet lag, grab snacks for the road, repack our bags, and get to know our new motorcycle in a controlled environment.

• Easy ride days. Of the five riding days, the longest mileage day is 140 miles. The other four are no more than 100 miles. This leaves lots of time for breaks, sightseeing and photo opportunities along the way.

• The ride pace will be leisurely. If speed is what you want this tour is not for you.

• We will be riding in a group with a tour leader and a sweep rider and will go over the rules of group riding for those new to it. If group riding is not your thing, this tour might not be for you.

• Four nights of the nine-day tour are spent in the same hotel, in Siena, with a rest day and loop day-rides from that hotel. This allows us to settle into one hotel and enjoy its amenities, instead of having to unpack and repack each day in less than 24 hours time. There will be options to pre-schedule a massage on our rest day in Siena.

• A support vehicle will carry our luggage so we can travel light on our motorcycles. If we want to extend our stay, we’ll also have the opportunity to leave extra luggage at the hotel in Rome, our start and end point.

• Siena, the four-night hotel location, is home to one of Italy’s finest shopping districts.

• All the roads we’ll travel are paved and are categorized as easy, meaning a minimum of hairpin turns or crazy off-camber twisties. The roads were chosen to meet the needs of first-time overseas tour travelers who will be overwhelmed enough by the new environment.

• This “Magical Italy” itinerary was designed to showcase a lot of variety of Italy in a short amount of time. We’ll get a good taste of all that this historical and beautiful country has to offer.

• Since the majority of women in the U.S. ride a Harley-Davidson, Harleys will be available in addition to BMW and Moto Guzzi.

• Since most North Americans are not used to European traffic patterns, we’ve planned it so we’re leaving Rome early on a Sunday morning when streets are relatively quiet.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME RAFFLE RESULTS—I didn’t win again, but Pat Brase and B.J. Whitley Win 12th Annual Wheels Through Time Vintage Motorcycle Raffle!

This past Saturday, November 15, over one thousand visitors gathered at Wheels Through Time to witness the museum’s 12th Annual Vintage Motorcycle Raffle Giveaway. Sunny skies and brisk temperatures kept the crowd on their feet as the museum made two lucky ticket holders the winners of the 1935 and 1936 Harley-Davidson VL Flathead Bobbers.

The days festivities began as the 23rd Annual Haywood County Toy Run left downtown Canton headed for Wheels Through Time. Despite morning temperatures well below freezing, over 250 motorcycles braved the weather to help the children of Haywood County. After a catered barbeque lunch put on by the Blue Ridge Thunder Motorcycle Club, all attention turned to the stage in anticipation of the drawing that would determine the new owners of two genuine American classics.

This year, two Grand Prize machines were up for grabs – a pair of 1935 and 1936 Harley-Davidson VL Flathead Bobbers. Over the past year, these two beautiful machines helped the 2014 Museum Raffle become the largest Wheels Through Time fundraiser to date, raising much needed revenue for WTT to build new exhibits, expand its interpretation, and improve the overall museum experience for its visitors.

When it came time to draw the winning tickets, all in attendance fell silent, then on Dale’s mark, began a 20 second countdown as an energetic youngster dove in to the throusands of tickets head first. As the countdown reached zero, the little girl held out two tickets – one in each of her outstretched arms.

As indicated in the drawings rules, the first ticket pulled would be the proud new owner of Bike #1 – the 1935 Harley-Davidson VLD Bobber. The winner was Pat Brase from Ft. Wayne, IN. Pat first visited the museum three years ago, and after having such a great time during his first stop, he came back this past 4th of July weekend with friends. During his visit he donated a 1951 AMA Riders Book, which he proudly mentioned include a mention of his uncle, who was one of the first racers in Indiana to have an AMA national number. Before his visit was over, he decided to buy 7 tickets for the museum’s annual raffle.

Pat’s family has been riding motorcycles for over a century. One of his prized possessions is a photograph from a motorcycle race in 1910, with his grandfather and great grandfather in the front row. Pat himself has been riding for over 50 years, and is the senior Chaplain for the Indian Patriot Guard Riders. He even has owned a few “old bikes” along the way. “When I started riding, you had to be a mechanic, so I learned,” Pat said. “My dad rode Harley’s, and taught me a lot.” His first motorcycle was a Harley-Davidson 125cc “Hummer” and later, he and his brother together bought a 1936 Harley-Davidson VLH. Although the bike was a basketcase and incomplete, the two had big plans to get it running. But when an interested party made them an offer they couldn’t refuse, they decided to let it go.

Now, decades later, Pat is again the proud owner of a genuine Harley-Davidson VL Flathead. With the help of his wife and son, he has decided that he’ll be taking the bike instead of the alternate cash prize.

Winner of Bike #2 — the 1936 Harley-Davidson VL “Dale Special” Bobber — is B.J. Whitley from Garner, North Carolina. While B.J. lives only a few hours away, he had never visited the Smoky Mountains until this year. He and his wife’s first visit to the area, and to Wheels Through Time was the during the exact same week that Pat Brase, winner of Bike #1, visited the museum. B.J. is the second Carolina winner in the past two years (last year’s grand prize was taken home by a South Carolina resident).

When speaking of his July visit to Wheels Through Time, he said he was impressed by the diversity and the number of machines on display, citing the American Board Track Racing Exhibit and the Chopper Graveyard as two of his favorite areas of the museum. He recalled watching in amazement as Dale and Matt cranked up bike after bike, and couldn’t believe it when Dale jumped aboard a 1915 Harley and rode out the front door. During his visit to Wheels Through Time, B.J. bought 14 tickets for the annual raffle, mainly to help support the museum’s mission. Little did he know that just over four months later, he would get a phone call that would change his life.

B.J. and his wife Shelby have been riding motorcycles most of their lives. His first bike was a Honda 450, that he eventually converted into a 3-wheel machine with a Harley Servicar rear end. Although he has never ridden a bike with a foot-clutch and tank-shift, he is excited to give the ’36 Flathead Bobber a go.

Also during Saturday’s festivities, Wheels Through Time unveiled the new Grand Prize for the 13th Annual Vintage Motorcycle Raffle in 2015. Next year’s lucky winner will take home a stunning 1939 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead Bobber custom built by Wendell Turner at Turner’s Cycle Shop in South Lyon, Michigan. Tickets are on sale at WheelsThroughTime.com/2015raffle.

The Wheels Through Time museum would like to thank each and every participant that contributed to the 2014 Vintage Motorcycle Raffle. Each year, thousands of generous individuals support the museum through its raffle fundraiser, and make it possible for WTT to continue to fulfill its mission to educate and inspire a diverse audience about the history of American transportation.

LONG BEACH SHOW REPORTThe Progressive International Motorcycle Show plays host to the Ultimate Builder. Every custom bike is placed on a J&P Cycles’ oval carpet surrounded by a steel ring and positioned on the red carpet that runs through the main isle. Custom bikes are the first and last bikes you see as you enter the friendly confines.

Keith “Bandit” Ball of Bikernet.com provided the Editor’s Choice Award to Todd White for his Lunch Box Special, his KZ440 LTD hardtail Bobber and the Bikernet Bagger Award to Raul Machin for his Lifestyle Cycle-built 2012 Road Glide.

The builders brought their A-Game when it came to engaging with the crowd. They brought models, handed out flyers, stickers and stayed around their bike to promote their business. The company that did it the best and cross-promoted with their booth was Hanson Motorcycles. They won the Show Dog award and a Solo Bag from The Leather Works.

A Bell Helmet and a Special Ops Vest from 5-Ball Racing Leathers are the two prizes provided to Imagine Vehicles Int’l for the People’s Choice Award.

The J&P Cycle’s Ultimate Builder Award for FreeStyle

Dave McGovert connected with the Ultimate Builder team on Friday morning and wanted to know if he could enter the show as he was in San Jose, just 5 hours away. He loaded his gear and blasted down to Long Beach and made it into the show with minutes to spare. We are glad he did because his 2010 Road Glide called Purple Haze with his eye-catching 30” billet front wheel and ear-bleeding stereo took the win.

Dave pumped the engine with cams and added exhaust and tuner. He applied the paint himself. The bike just gleamed on the center aisle. His stereo was so powerful that it competed with the live School of Rock show.

The J&P Cycle’s Ultimate Builder Award for MOD Custom

Of the 32 bikes in the competition, 20 of them where in the MOD Custom Class. So the competition was fierce. It was a horsepower delight with super chargers, turbos and big inch engines. We even had a 500 horsepower Busa. But the custom bike that really stood out was the Sporty from Samuel Jung San KAO. He migrated to the United States to build motorcycles because in his home country of Korea it is illegal to build customs.

His Café Racer styled bike is called the Ivory Comet features a single sided swing arm, custom tins, updated front racing suspension and single rear shock. It’s built off a 1997 Harley-Davidson Sportster with paint by Air Runner Custom Paint.
Samuel Jung San KAO – Ivory Comet, 1997 H-D Sportster

The J&P Cycle’s Ultimate Builder Award for Retro MOD

The Retro MOD class is a fan favorite because the platform is any bike that is 1984 and older. And you never know what type of bike you will find. In SOCAL we had strong competition, but the bike that rose to the top was from Casey Johnson of Headcase Kustom Art. He rolled in Medusa, his 1983 Ironhead Sportster. It featured handmade gas tank, tail section, oil tank, handle bars and exhaust.

The custom bike show has become the number one feature at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show with new bikes presented at each round of the traveling motorcycle circus.

BIKERNET 5-BALL RACING INDIAN PROJECT UPDATE— Hope you are not getting any of this cold weather that we are. It was 24 degrees this am. Not weather that I am use to.

Anyway, I am going to start on your fender this week and hope to have all of your sheet metal to the painter by end of next week. I just want to make sure I am clear on how you want to change the rear fender?

I have looked at your yellow Indian and the picture of the raw fender and the major difference is the front part of the fender. I was thinking that you wanted the line of the bottom of the fender a little different? Sorry for being a little confused. It’s been a while since we went over it. I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

ANOTHER WHACKY DAY IN PARADISE—It’s nuts. I tell everyone to leave me alone on Thursdays because of the scramble to complete the news and bring you the best column on the Bikernet planet. So, what happens? Folks show up, bang on the door, serve me subpoenas, call, send demanding e-mails, ask me to review contracts, kill me with kindness, you name it.

A woman called today and said, “Quick, come over here and look at this container full of motorcycle parts.” What the hell. How could I resist, right?

As I write this the team from Wellington signs is wrapping the electrical box blocking the front of our building. I’ve been waiting for a month, but it had to happen today.

One night this week between shows and heavy business meetings, Commander Edge, of the Smoke Out and I performed a BDL tech to the mudflap Girl FXR. We installed the new BDL lock up clutch pressure plate. It took just 20 minutes, and gives lots of riders another clutch pressure plate option.

During our extensive 5-Ball racing apparel shoot one 5-Ball came up missing. We immediately question Prince Najar, when one of the Bikernet University faculty members discovered it in an archeological dig behind the headquarters. It has been returned to its rightful position near the Bikernet Nerve Center.

That’s all I have, I need to clean up and peel to Crystal’s Birthday Party, then tomorrow will scream into another sun-filled day with a list a mile long. Hopefully squeeze in a ride this weekend.

Have a blast,

And Ride FREE Forever,

–Bandit
