I’m in the middle of a mechanical blender turned on high. My self esteem has been hit by a number of mechanical pitfalls. I love to work in the shop, fix or created something that improves a project and go for a ride. But this year we’ve had a couple of mechanical woes constantly haunting us. The Salt Shaker just doesn’t run like it should, and I’m stumbling trying to get it ironed out. You will see a report below.
Last year I built the Crazy Horse powered 5-Ball Factory Racer. What a cool bike, but it’s never run right, but I think we’re getting closer. Then I need to deal with the Peashooter. Good god. I’ll spend the rest of my life writing and tinkering with these goddamn motorcycles. You’ll see them all come together, do or die trying, goddamnit.
I love building and creating the next project, but grappling with mechanical obstacles unsuccessfully gives me the blues. On a major positive note, we have three, count ’em, three chances to win a new motorcycle right here in the Thursday News. NEW TECH ON BIKERNET–Having read over your article on installing the SE cam plate in your son’s Dyna I thought to follow suit. A bit of internet reading revealed another option and I installed Andrew conversion cams with a Harley 2007 cam support plate and hardware. JIMS BIG TWIN HYDROSOLID TAPPETS–We just replaced our JIMS solid tappets with these JIMS performance hydro solids. I spoke to Denise at JIMS and she told me to adjust them as if they were solids. When I received the package the next day, I, natch, read the instructions. It called for reading the installation info by part number on the web site. I did so, which called for adjusting them like solids then adding five flats to the adjustment, letting them settle, then adding more until you can barely spin the pushrod with your fingers. Unfortunately I should have just listened to the Denise and not the directions. The bike would not run at all and I’m starting over.
I sincerely hope I didn’t hurt anything.

UNCLE MONKEY MEETS BIG FOOT–The Softail frame in my garage started out as a quick build. It was to be a clean frame with adaptability, built so that I could change sheet metal and thus looks on a yearly basis. FatBoy, Heritage, Custom, chopper, bobber all were to be readily available. At least that was the initial plan. Yes, I get bored easily, why I’m still with the same beautiful wife after 19 years, which is a mystery to her. But life moves on and the itch to ride had me on a FatBoy before I got beyond a rolling chassis. Now, a couple years later, the FatBoy is gone, off to a better home and I turned my attention back to the Softail.
Not so fast, my adorable wife put the preverbal foot down. We had been over our heads renovating a hundred year old three-story house and for the last year and a half have been living without running water or a sink in our kitchen. I was forced to promise that I wouldn’t start working on the bike until the kitchen was operational. I was adequately motivated and I’m nearing a completed kitchen renovation and polished dining room. My loving wife honored her side of the bargain and opened the door to my Softail renovation. I immediately started thumbing through the massive stacks of motorcycle parts catalogs. It will be a few years before I’m done paying for the kitchen, but the daily “Oh we’ll need this too” has trickle to a stop so now I can start budgeting for my dire bike.
As the fall chill sets into the air my plans have changed from years ago, when I first started building the Softail. I now have a very set idea as to what this project will look like when it is finished. Gone is a blank canvas of a frame which I could change yearly, replaced with a stock-inspired custom. Right now, my only stumbling block is stamped steel or billet forward controls. Both will look good but which will look best.
A sharp classic custome never goes out of style.
The myriad of custom parts selections are vast and overwhelming. Just because something can bolt on doesn’t mean it should. Each piece should work together to a common goal, common thread, common ideal. Just as billet controls would look out of place on an old school bobber or stamped steel on a high-end chopper. Everything has a place in the world of motorcycles.
Some people look at bike building much the same way they made art in school; spread out glue and dump as much sparkle and glitter on as possible and then lift, whatever sticks is deemed good enough. That was cool enough for mom’s fridge for a week. But I digress. There is no right way or wrong way to build a bike, we just know if it is right or if it is wrong when it is done. If you (and your mom) like it, that’s all that matters. Now, if you don’t mind, I have to sign my name on a piece of macaroni art.

SACRAMENTO—Motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in a charity event to collect toys to be distributed to less fortunate children during the upcoming holiday season.
Renegade Classics Outlet in Sacramento and Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln, CA, have joined to co-sponsor the 8th Annual Santa Claus Toy Run. The toys collected during this charity event will benefit Mustard Seed School, RISE, Inc. and other local charities serving underprivileged children in our community.
The “Toy Run” will kick off with breakfast on Saturday, November 20th between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Renegade Classics, located at 6758 Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento. At 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., groups of Bikers will be escorted from Renegade Classics to Thunder Valley. The private party at Thunder Valley, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will feature live music by “Rogue” and a special 90 minute show by Branscombe Richmond and the Renegade Posse.
There will be celebrity appearances by Lorenzo Lamas (Reno), Kathleen Kinmont (Cheyenne) and Branscombe Richmond (Bobby Sixkiller) from the hit TV Series “Renegade” throughout the event. Lorenzo and Kathleen will also be leading the ride from Renegade Classics to Thunder Valley.
Bikers are encouraged to pre-register for the “Toy Run” between Saturday, November 6th and Friday, November 19th. Tickets will also be on sale the day of the event at Renegade Classics. Tickets are $20 plus a new, unwrapped toy.

BIKERNET WORLD DESK CORRESPONDENT PROMISES TO REPORT FROM MOROCCO–I think I told you I’m writing a book (no motorcycles in it to speak of). Part of the book takes place in Morocco. I’m headed there in two weeks, for two weeks. I’m actually headed to a place called Assa-Zag, which is in the southeastern part of the country, near the Sahara Desert. I’ll keep an eye out for cool bikes.
Knowing Arab-oriented countries, there probably won’t be much but crappy little two-stroke scooters, but I’ll see what I can find.
I have to give up moderating some functions of the Bikernet Forum. I’m working 15-hour days, and traveling my ass off. I can continue to moderate, but you might want to get someone else to handle new members and login problems.

CRAZY HORSE PERFORMANCE UPGRADE COMING TO BIKERNET–We’ve had a nagging problem with our new 100-inch Crazy Horse engine. We love this bastard, but spending a year making it run, is a drag. It stumbles severly at mid range. We’ve investigated from coast to coast, from LA Chop Rods to Blackhawk Motor Works. I spoke at length to Frank Aliano, the boss today.
We are going to install their cam cover plate, so that we can replace the Thunder-Heart, stock ignition system with a standard Compu-Fire single fire system. We may also replace the cam with an S&S 561 cam from Custom Chrome and adjustable pushrods. After a discussion with Lee Clemens my problem could be the Thunder-Heart system or cam timing. Most Crazy Horse fans remove Thunder-Heart ignitions and replace them with regular Evo systems, which are readily available.
Lee, from Departure Bike Works told me of a story regarding a bike they recently build, which was inflicted with a similar problem. When they switched out the cam, the bike ran fine. I remember 20 years ago, Kim Peterson, the editor of In The Wind, had a problem with a Panhead. We did everything to that bastard, and it still was a bastard to start. Keith Ruxton discovered bad cam timing, corrected it, and it’s still running today. I hope.

2-Time Land Speed Record Holder
BIKERTOBERFEST STARTS TODAY!–But that’s not stopping bikers from bringing out their hogs a few days early.
Local businesses say they’ve noticed an influx of bikers, but it’s unclear whether most of those are locals or out-of-towners extending their trips. Kevin Hannah, who manages Gilly’s Pub 44 in New Smyrna Beach, said he’s noticed a small increase in bar traffic. “The weather’s been so gorgeous that the local bikers are out and riding hard. I think this is all local business right now, which we’re all very grateful for,” Hannah said.
Mandy Rossmeyer Campbell said there were more bikes at Destination Daytona, probably a combination of Columbus Day and Biketoberfest. She said that’s normal for the week of Biketoberfest.
Tangela Boyd, spokeswoman for the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said bikers in town before Biketoberfest is nothing new.
“Some stay the whole time, others come down early to beat the crowds,” Boyd said. “We’re definitely happy to see them here.”

THE INFAMOUS KRYLON JOHN REPORT– Our freedom hangs by a thread that’s held loosely in the hands of government bureaucrats, who really don’t seem to give a shit. I call it “the time two redneck assholes learned the difference between a longhaired biker and a hippie.” The year was 1975, and it happened on the afternoon of June 21, the first day of summer.
I was going to pick up my girlfriend to see a Bad Company concert in Los Angeles when I had a run-in with two guys in a ’59 Ford pickup tailgating me on the Pomona freeway. They were ignoring lane restrictions and towing a cement mixer at a high rate of speed when they pulled up on the tail of my car in congested traffic. When I got a chance I moved over into the next lane and they screamed fuck yous as they passed. While we were side-by-side I flipped them off, and then paid it no more attention. At some point the pickup dropped behind, and then several miles ahead where I exited the freeway the pair pursued, and caught up with me while I was stopped at a red light. The two ran up to my black ’70 340 Duster armed with a 2×4, and initiated a fight.
What ensued was a classic textbook example of what happens when two drunks bring a 2×4 to a knife fight. Thanks to his high blood-alcohol level coupled with my innate ability to fillet while under 2×4 attack, the primary aggressor bled like a stuck pig, and consequently their road rage rapidly subsided. When they got back in their truck and left, I thought it was over, but hours later I was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. I sold everything I owned, hired an attorney, and fought the opportunity to do 15-to-life like crazy. After how many appearances I can’t remember, and a few years waiting my trial was presided over by the late Robert M. Takasugi http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?tab=speeches&id=300011. At his last Superior Court trial before he was appointed to a Federal bench, Judge Takasugi decided that I acted in self-defense, but used excessive force — Ultimately the final disposition was a misdemeanor.
At least a decade, or so later I walked into a Big 5 Sporting Goods store and bought a 12-gauge shotgun that was on sale. I persevered the 10-day waiting period, and then returned to learn our government had determined I didn’t have the right to own a shotgun. Explaining to the zit-faced kid at the counter that I wasn’t a felon fell on deaf ears and it was obvious the corporation had trained him how deal with this sort of occasion. I put the experience on my list of shitty personal problems I really needed to correct someday, but didn’t know how — That is until today when I found the following news release from the Second Amendment Foundation.

BELLEVUE, WA – Acting on behalf of a Georgia resident and honorably discharged Vietnam War veteran, the Second Amendment Foundation today filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Eric Holder and the Federal Bureau of Investigation over enforcement of a federal statute that can deny gun rights to someone with a simple misdemeanor conviction on his record.
The lawsuit was filed in United States District Court for the District of Columbia. SAF and co-plaintiff Jefferson Wayne Schrader of Cleveland, GA. are represented by attorney Alan Gura, who successfully argued both the Heller and McDonald cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In July 1968, Schrader, then 21, was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and battery relating to a fight involving a man who had previously assaulted him in Annapolis, MD. The altercation was observed by a police officer, who arrested Schrader, then an enlisted man in the Navy, stationed in Annapolis. The man he fought with was in a street gang that had attacked him for entering their “territory,” according to the complaint.
Schrader was ordered to pay a $100 fine and $9 court cost. He subsequently served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was eventually honorably discharged. However, in 2008 and again in 2009, Mr. Schrader was denied the opportunity to receive a shotgun as a gift, or to purchase a handgun for personal protection. He was advised by the FBI to dispose of or surrender any firearms he might have or face criminal prosecution.
“Schrader’s dilemma,” explained SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb, “is that until recently, Maryland law did not set forth a maximum sentence for the crime of misdemeanor assault. Because of that, he is now being treated like a felon and his gun rights have been denied.
“No fair-minded person can tolerate gun control laws being applied this way,” he added. “Mr. Schrader’s case is a great example of why gun owners cannot trust government bureaucrats to enforce gun laws.

When my attorney found out my righteous name was “Crazy” John he seemed to be concerned the fact might hurt my case. Fortunately the DA at my sentencing (not DA Higa) that called for me to do 7 years before I was up for parole wasn’t into researching his cases.

BIKERS are ANIMALS 2 – The Rest of the Crew by Paul Jamiol is the second in a series of children’s books that brings young readers into a world of animals that love to ride their motorcycles.
In the first book, the author introduced his cartoon animals on “cool” motorcycles to show children and parents that motorcycle riding is fun and that those involved in motorcycling are intelligent and caring. The Rest of the Crew takes children further into that world with all new colorful characters, new bikes and new stories. Jamiol’s cartoon motorcycle world embraces a child’s imagination and works to expand that imagination in a fun and entertaining way.
Each character has his/her own individual look and his/her own individual motorcycle. These animals are independent and love the freedom to be who they are. Kids will see that different species do get along and can thrive both by themselves and together. Some are large and some are small, but their pride in what they do is evident in all.
They are young and old, male and female, and their motorcycles are as different as they are. Skyla the bear takes pride in her new paint job and Rachet the turkey has no problem using his tools to help his fellow riders in need. Crag is an alligator who sees the value of leaving the swamp behind and hitting the open road. The reasons for doing what they love to do are also different and varied. H-D OF VALPARAISO HIRED STAFF FROM CLOSED CRETE DEALERSHIP–Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso has hired some of the folks displace by the closure of H-D of Crete, and is honoring warranties from the defunct shop as well.
The dealership hired John (Master Painter), Kyle (Parts and Accessories) and Steph Galloway (Motorclothes), who will join the Valparaiso crew Nov. 1.
“We would like to extend an offer to the customers who have purchased Genuine Motorclothes or parts and accessories from Harley-Davidson of Crete,” reads a message the dealer posted on Valpo Life. “Please keep your receipts, and if you have any warranty-related problems, bring the item and receipt to our store. We will assist you to the best of our ability with these issues.”

AMA ON THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS–We have 20 days until Election Day to Vote Like a Motorcyclist.
The elections on November 2 are some of the most important in many years for the future of motorcycling. It is critical for motorcyclists to utilize these last 20 days to identify motorcycle-friendly candidates, assist their run for office, and Vote Like a Motorcyclist.
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) encourages all riders to register and vote, encourage other riders to register and vote, as well as volunteer on a motorcycle-friendly candidate’s campaign. If the riding community wants to have a say in this year’s elections outcome, we must take action now. We have 20 days to make an impact this election cycle.
There are many ways to assist a motorcycle-friendly candidate’s campaign and volunteering can be fun – invite a friend or two to join you.

JAY LENO RECOMMENDS VISITING WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM– In mid-August 2010, Wheels Through Time Museum Curator and Founder, Dale Walksler, was bestowed the honor of displaying two rare American racing motorcycles from the museum collection at the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California. Regarded as the world’s premier gathering of automotive history, the sixty year-old invitation-only event annually brings together several hundred of the rarest and most desirable vehicles ever produced for a one-day spectacle that attracts tens of thousands of fans and spectators from around the globe.
2010 marked the second year in which motorcycles were displayed, with a total of twelve two-wheel machines gracing what is often referred to as the best finishing hole in golf — Pebble Beach’s 18th Fairway. When the judging was complete, Walksler and both museum machines in attendance came away with two out of three of the shows top honors — the rare 1909 Reading Standard placing second, and the one-of-a-kind 1929 Harley-Davidson DAR placing third.
While at the Concours, both Walksler and the two Wheels Through Time motorcycle garnered particular attention from fans and specators alike, including one of the most famed celebrities in show business, Jay Leno. During the show, the avid car and motorcycle enthusiast, and host of NBC’s Tonight Show, conducted an in-depth, six-minute interview with Walksler highlighting both the prestige and excellence of those machines lucky enough to be invited to the once-a-year gathering.
During the interview, which was recently released on the “Jay Leno’s Garage” website, a subsidiary of NBC’s Tonight Show, Walksler and Leno discuss one of the award winning machines from Wheels Through Time — the 1929 Harley-Davidson DAR board track racer — addressing both its rarity and significance in the history of American motorcycling, and how it holds a special place in the museum’s collection of over 300 of our country’s most historic two-wheelers. Walksler shares the intimate details of how the machine was found after sitting idle for over 70 years, and the process in which it was brought back to its former, ear-splitting glory.
Jay also offers high praise for the Wheels Through Time Museum itself during the segment, citing it as one of the best museum’s in North America. During the interview Walksler and Leno share the origins of the museum — a dream of Walkslers since he began collecting over 40 years ago — and the museum’s focus on rare, all-American motorcycles, particularly those with great stories and exceptional pasts.
“Having the opportunity to display two machines at Pebble Beach is an outstanding honor for myself and the entire museum staff,” said Walksler. “We’re so proud to share these machines with the rest of the automotive and motorcycle world, and Jay has played a big part in sharing them with a wider audience than ever before.” During the segment, Leno even addressed his hopes of coming to shoot another piece at the museum in the future.

SPEAKING OF UNFINISHED MOTORCYCLE PROJECTS–Tomorrow I’ll cruise over to Bennett’s Performance and finish putting the Assalt Weapan back together. Then we will begin the stationary engine break-in process, and back on the Dyno for tuning the Pegasus fuel injection. There’s a side of Eric Bennett and I leaning toward removing the Pegasus fuel injection for an S&S G carburetor, just to remove complications. But we headed down this path and we’re going to stick with the Pegasus crew until we have a couple of hot rod passes on the Mojave Mile in a few months.
Today I fired the Salt Shaker with the new JIMS tappets and JIMS pushrods. She runs, and I’m not sure where to go from here. Maybe ride her to the bar and drown my mechanical sorrows in Jack Daniels. Let me tell you something, a Bikernet Code. I hate DUI laws. I feel they’re unfair and downright ridiculous, and I refuse to fall victim to the bastards.
I won’t drink and ride or drive. There’s way too much at risk. If I want to drink, I get a ride. Don’t let the bastards get you down. That bottle of beer is not worth $10,000 and your freedom.
