Thursday News – Good News

Hey,

It’s another bananas week in Paradise. The City, the Port of Los Angeles, Wilmington, the DWP (Department of Water and Power), AT&T, contractors, and the grunts working in the streets outside of our building have a deadline to finish our intersection. You wouldn’t believe the holes they’re drilling today, almost 4 feet in diameter, rumor has it for signal poles. I’m sure the recent rains fucked with their program, but they’re out in the streets scrambling today. They pasted a warning on the front of our building: April 4th the Harry Bridges traffic patterns will change.

I finished the forward for my 1%er book and turned it in. The editing process is underway, and the frame building process is in the welding department at Spitfire. I may find myself without 40 projects this weekend. I’m trying to finish polishing the brass porthole cover, so we can ship it to Heather New. I decided to have it engraved with our Bikernet 15th anniversary logo. I filed this cast chunk of brass, I sanded it with emery paper and now I’m working it over with various wet and dry grits. I can’t wait.

Let’s hit the news:

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL CAPITAL BUREAU REPORT THAT FREEDOM MIGHT RETURN TO NEVADA– CARSON CITY — After failing for five straight sessions to repeal the state’s 39-year-old motorcycle helmet law, Sen. Don Gustavson has developed a new, perhaps winnable, strategy:

Let them take off their helmets, and they will come.

He says they will show up for the Laughlin River Run, Reno Street Vibrations and every other biker rally, stay at the finest hotels and gamble away fortunes.

At the same time, a helmet-free state will spawn greater local interest in riding. More motorcycle dealerships will open.

The economy will begin to boom if Nevada repeals its helmet law, he predicts.

“Mine is the only bill that will create new jobs and revenue for Nevada without raising taxes,” said Gustavson, R-Sparks, during a Senate Transportation Committee hearing last week.

The hearing attracted dozens of motorcycle riders who want the law thrown out and a large contingent of police who prefer the status quo.

Motorcycle dealers and the Laughlin River Run coordinator aren’t as optimistic as Gustavson. Although they favor the proposal, they say changing the law would only bring slight increases in business.

And based on what happened in Florida after it repealed its helmet law, Nevada also could see an increase in motorcycle rider deaths.

THE BIKER EVIDENCE

Gustavson wants to amend his Senate Bill 177 to make it effective upon passage and approval. The Laughlin River Run is April 27 to May 1, and he hopes those riders won’t have to wear helmets.

According to the Greater Johnstown Convention & Visitors Bureau, attendance at the Thunder in the Valley motorcycle rally in Pennsylvania increased by 30,000 following that state’s repeal of its helmet law. The rally is held each June.

Based on the $2.8 billion increase in motorcycle sales reported by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in the five years after its helmet law was repealed in 2000, Gustavson predicts a $56 million increase in the sales of motorcycles in Nevada following helmet law repeal.

“I think a 30 percent to 40 percent increase in the first year is realistic,” Gustavson said. “Five percent a year after that.”

Joe O’Day, coordinator of the Laughlin River Run, expects a slight, but not substantial, increase in attendance if riders don’t have to wear helmets. Attendance at last year’s event was 50,000, down from the peak of 70,000 before the recession hit Nevada.

“From a public relations standpoint, it would be a big boom,” O’Day said. “From a safety standpoint, helmets are safer than riding without them. But riders strongly feel they should have the right to choose.”

Nationally, the median age of a motorcycle rider in 2007 was 48, compared with 24 in 1980, according to Karen Juranski, vice president of the ABATE of Southern Nevada.

“I read an article that referred to us as ‘rebels with disposable income,’ ” Juranski said. “We all know disposable income runs this state. The average motorcycle rider today is an older, educated person who has money. Shouldn’t we make the decision whether to wear a helmet?”

ABATE is an organization for motorcycle enthusiasts in many states that has advocated for decades for the repeal of helmet laws. It now stands for A Brotherhood for Active Education, although initially it meant A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments.

GUSTAVSON HAS ALLIES

Gustavson, typically the lone rider on the issue in past sessions, has allies in his 2011 effort to repeal the helmet law.

Sen. Elizabeth Halseth, R-Las Vegas, repeatedly challenged witnesses who spoke out against helmet law repeal last week.

Committee members John Lee, D-North Las Vegas, and Mark Manendo, D-Las Vegas, are repeal bill co-sponsors.

“We have enough votes to get it out of the committee and get it out of the Senate,” Gustavson said. “I haven’t polled the other house yet. Maybe the time is right. Gas prices are going up and more people will be riding. This is good for the economy and will give us our freedom back.”

But Chairwoman Shirley Breeden, D-Henderson, isn’t so sure the bill will pass.

Breeden said she wants to hear from the insurance industry before scheduling a vote.

The Automobile Association of America sent a letter in opposition, but did not have a representative at the hearing. The high cost of medical care for uninsured riders injured in accidents has been a primary reason why the bill failed in previous sessions.

THE BUCKSHOT TICKET STORY–This is a true story. I know, because it was ME!

The only ticket I’ve ever talked my way out of was a helmet law ticket a while back. I took my Panhead around the block the morning I finished it to warm it up and see how it handled. No helmet, of course.

Being hungry, I thought I’d just ride the few blocks to Mickey D’s for a burger, since there wasn’t a cop in sight. I made it all the way to their parking lot when a young City cop passed me in the opposite direction heading for the street. When I saw him make a screamin’ U turn, I knew I was had, so I just pulled in and shut it down, then walked back to his car, where he already had his ticket book out resting on the steering wheel.

“Got any warrants?” was the first thing out of his mouth. His bad mood was obvious, and he didn’t mind taking it out on me.

“Nope” I told him, handing him my license, insurance, and registration. As he started to open the ticket book, I said “Would you mind if I asked you a question, officer?”

“Doesn’t mean I’ll answer it,” he replied with a scowl.

Shaking my head, I asked him: “If someone in Sacramento or Washington D.C. decided that it didn’t matter if you were on your first date, or had been married for 60 years; every time you had sex, you had to wear a condom, wouldn’t you want to slip in for a quickie without one once in a while?”

At first, he just stared at me, then he started to laugh. I guess I chased his bad mood away, ‘cause he handed me back my stuff and said, “get your ass out of here before I change my mind!” When I fired up the Pan and rode away, he was still laughing.

I wasn’t, ‘cause I never got my damn hamburger!

CALIFORNIA GUN NUT REPORT: State Assembly Committee to Hear Bill to Ban Open Carry–  Please contact members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee!

In an effort for further stifle law-abiding gun owners from exercising their right to keep and bear arms, anti-gun state Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-44) has introduced legislation that would change the state’s gun laws and prohibit law-abiding citizens from carring an unloaded handgun openly. Assembly Bill 144 will be heard by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, April 12 at 9 a.m. in room 126 on the first floor of the capitol.

It is currently legal to carry an unloaded handgun into most public places within the state, including restaurants and malls, but if approved, AB 144 would make it a misdemeanor to carry an unloaded handgun in public under most circumstances.
Please contact members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee to and urge them to stand up for the law-abiding gun owners of California and oppose AB 144.

NEW SET OF OLD FXR STRAIGHT PIPES FOR SALE– If you ever decide you need a set of drag pipes on the FXR project. I’ve got a brand new set that I bought to put on my FXRS. I sold the bike before I ever got them installed. I’d take $60.00 plus shipping for them…

They are a little different in that they have a rolled edge on the ends. They have the T-bolts, but no flanges or retaining rings. The paper they were wrapped in is from 1995!

THE BIKERNET POEM OF THE WEEK,

Throttle dirge-By Buckshot–

I roll on the throttle and feel the surge
as wild and urgent as a primal urge.
The blacktop before me has a life of its own;
it beckons me forward like lovers I’ve known.

I lean into curves like the swell of hips
and the narrow bridges like puckered lips.
Excitement builds as I round each curve;
how far can I push it if I have the nerve?

Sparks are flying as I make the turns,
the pipes are scraping and the asphalt burns.
I push the limits of my bike and skill,
as the Twin Cam engine drinks it’s fill.

Life holds no wonder without the ride;
it’s hollow and empty with nothing inside,
and the warm amber whisky, it takes me away
to places I’ve been but couldn’t stay.

So I revere the throttle and the thrill it brings,
and the whisky that promises angel’s wings;
the end will be fast, with no time to linger,
when that terrible Reaper points his finger.

Do I fear his touch? No, not at all!
He reaches for me like a siren’s call,
and from the carnage my soul will fly,
then we’ll ride forever, my lover and I.

But she does not care; she does not feel,
for I am flesh and she is steel,
so I’ll lavish her with paint and chrome
and be the one who takes her home.

UNCLE MONKEY DISCUSSES PETS, ONE IN PARTICULAR–My friend is planning a birthday for his Maggie this week. A precious pup with a sense of adventure Maggie soon found a spot on the back of Don’s bike. Maggie has been Don’s best friend for the last thirteen years. Through thick and thin she has been there racking up more miles then some riders do.

Maggie isn’t alone. Since the first days of riding man’s best friend has been there to share the experience. From big Shepard to the smallest tea cup Chihuahua they watch the world go by from the back of a bike. Some times it is a sidecar, some times in a small bag but they are their weathering the elements with us. They are as well geared as we are.

Any trip through the venders at any major rally will reveal they have their own helmets, goggles, leather and bandanas.

They sit by our side as we gather around the campfire at the end of the day sharing the day’s road. There are few places that won’t welcome our furry companion. They can be found quietly waiting under a pool table while we down cold beers or guarding our bikes as we go in to pay for gas. Sometimes they are even frolicking with another riding companion.

So next time you are looking for a riding companion don’t overlook our four legged friends.

Think I’ve been busy waiting lately. Hope your projects are moving at a noticeable rate. No motorcycle to ride today, it is the shits although still staying fairly busy with everyday challenges.

Nothing but good news from San Jose. The sunshine has finally returned, the rain might be gone for awhile and Randy Torgenson has my 124″ twin cam in Iowa rebuilding it for another shot at 80,000 miles, were waiting on pistons from CP ( 2 weeks out) for a proper rebuild that will handle the boost.

The Evo Bonneville Isolator frame project in Oregon is in line waiting for the frame table to open up.

Chelation therapy is on the menu twice a week for 8 treatments or so. Blood pressure last night was 117 over 78.

The Mojave Mile is Sunday the 10th, my plans are to attend with or without a hot rod with a full report from the pits.

ATK MOTORCYCLE ROAD TESTING– I personally don’t enjoy the 250’s however, I’m not a beginner rider who does…. (I’m a Desert-Enduro Racer).

What’s interesting is that some H-D Dealers ride the bikes and say they are slow and then ask when was the last time they rode a 250 and the answers is “when I was a kid”… Duh.

Kid’s (Echo Boomers) like the styling and the H-D Dealers think they need to look more Americana….. It’s interesting with the disconnect between the H-D Dealers and the future riders…..

HURT STUDY – Highlights – Key Points Learned

75% M/C crashes involve another vehicle
2/3 of those crashes other vehicle failed to yield right of way to M/C
Failure of motorist to recognize M/C is predominate cause of crash
Crash configuration—M/C traveling straight other vehicle turning maneuver
Riders 16 and 24 of age are over-represented in these crashes (96% male)
92% of the riders we self taught without any “formal” training
50% of fatal M/C riders had alcohol usage
Motorcyclist had significant collision avoidance problems, i.e., over/under braking, poor
ability to counter steer and swerve, etc.
Typically less than 2 seconds for motorcyclist to react
Motorcycles equipped with fairings and windshields low crash involvement – maybe related to conspicuity (more frontal surface)
High number of M/C riders had no M/C license , no license of any type or were
suspended/revoked
10% had insurance of any kind
Likelihood of injury—98% multiple vehicle, 96% single vehicle—45% more than minor
injury
Crash bars are not an effective injury countermeasure
Most Serious injuries–to the chest and head
60% were not wearing safety helmets — 26% did not wear helmets because they were
uncomfortable and inconvenient — 53% no expectation of accident involvement
Injury severity increases with speed, alcohol involvement and motorcycle size

We published most of the motorcycle law enforcement training manual. It’s on the home page. It paints a picture for urgent additional enforcement when 75% of the crashes are caused by motorists, generally not paying attention or talking on cell phones. But we’re always the underdog. Just more bullshit for bikers to deal with while trying to go for a ride.–Renegade

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION TESTIFIES BEFORE CONGRESS–
The US House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure held a historic two-day hearing March 29 and 30, 2011. The focus of the hearing was to gain valuable insight as the Committee drafts the next surface transportation reauthorization. The current legislation expired September 30, 2009 but has been on life support via a series of extensions that currently expire September 30, 2011.

The hearings called in a record 40 witnesses over the two days. The lengthy list included union representatives, mass transit, taxi drivers, truck drivers, financing experts and, of course, a motorcycle safety specialist.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) was contacted by committee staff to bring an expert motorcycle safety witness. To accommodate the request, the MRF contacted long-time MRF supporter Senator Bob Letourneau. Letourneau is a 15-year veteran of the New Hampshire legislator, who along the way chaired the New Hampshire House Transportation committee, as well as the New Hampshire Senate Transportation committee. He now serves at the New Hampshire Department of Safety as the resident Motorcycle Safety Specialist. He is also a recipient of the MRF’s highest honor, the John “Farmer” Eggers award.

Senator Letourneau was the only motorcycle safety expert on the witness list. His unique qualifications made him the perfect advocate for the expansion of the 2010 motorcycle safety grants. His testimony focused on the grant program, stressed its importance to the states, and urged the committee to keep the funds as they are now and not dilute the program to be used for frivolous purposes such as promotion of personal protective equipment, which was recently suggested by David Strickland, Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Subcommittee Chair John Duncan (R-TN) was especially impressed with Senator Letourneau’s testimony and personal observations concerning the validity of the New Hampshire rider education program. Letourneau cited a valuable and impressive and remarkable statistic, “Over ten years the New Hampshire rider education program has trained 23,000 students and out of the 23,000 students only 1 has been involved in a fatal crash, and we suspect that was most likely due to a medical event.” Chairman Duncan was visibly in awe of the statistic.

As always, the MRF will keep us up to date on this important issue.

PERFORMANCE MACHINE INTRODUCES TRIKE WHEEL DESIGNS FOR 2011–La Palma, CA – Performance Machine, a leader in motorcycle aftermarket wheels, entered the trike market in 2010 with its new Forged Trike wheels. Performance Machine (PM) Trike wheels are the first of their kind to be manufactured for Harley-Davidson, Honda Gold Wing, Victory and other select OEM trike applications. PM is currently developing wheels for Lehman’s new Kawasaki “Storm” trike, which will be introduced later this year.

PM starts with a specifically designed wheel blank that was developed to be a perfect match to their industry-leading forged motorcycle wheels. (Other manufacturers have adapted an automotive forging for their wheels) The result is a wheel package that will enhance the looks and the ride of trikes. Now, for the first time, trike riders can choose from six different forged wheel designs…all with matching rotors to compliment the looks of their trikes. BIKERNET INSURANCE DEPARTMENT MEMO–Who said insurance isn’t fun? Boring you all say?

Check out these wacky insurance policies that make our days down right exciting.

1. Alien Abduction Coverage
Do you toss and turn at night worrying about your family getting abducted by Martians? Yup, you can purchase an “alien abduction” policy to cover the risk.

2. Body Part Coverage
Certain celebrities and other big shots purchase hefty insurance policies on various high-value body parts. And, depending on your industry and role in it, them parts can be darn right interesting. Beauty Heidi Klum allegedly insured her long legs for $2.2 million. Mariah Carey allegedly bough a $1.0 billion policy covering here shapely legs to cover the risk of not being able to do her “Legs of a Goddess” for Gillette Corp.

3. Wedding Coverage
Weddings are outrageously expensive for some folks. Add the honeymoon costs and you can easily throw $50,000 down the drain. Some families are forced to cancel weddings at the last hour for whatever reasons. This is not “divorce” insurance. Insurance companies would go broke real fast if they offered this coverage given current split ville rates.

4. Kidnapping Coverage
Are you a prime target for kidnappers and extortionists? You can buy kidnap and ransom insurance. These are actually very popular with wealthy families and corporations who want to protect their top executives. This insurance reimburses the family or the company after they pay off the kidnappers.

5. Judge Insurance
Say you are taking part in high-stakes trial, you can insure the judge. This is a coverage we see when both parties have spent millions on legal bills and they don’t want to lose it all should something happen to the judge presiding on the trial.

Hey, it’s why we love insurance . . . so that you don’t have to. Remember, if you own it, love it, feel threatened by it or can imagine it, you can probably get insurance for it. And, you thought us insurance geeks at Bikernet Insurance were boring . . . think again.

You are not just a policy number with us. We Care About You.

Ride Safe Out There,

The Team at Bikernet Insurance

2011 THE HORSE LONG ROAD: DAY 1– The Long Road starts in New Orleans and ends at the Smoke Out. Edge will be leading the Chopper Jockeys to Rockingham, NC. First stop, Destin, FLA. Edge talks about day 1. More details right here.

About the Smoke Out – The Smoke Out is about choppers. It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Japanese, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm. The event is a full week to look at fine chops, listen to good music, relax, catch up with old friends or make new friends, eat good food, take a couple nice putts in a pretty countryside, drink some beer, shop the vendors wares,… and on and on…

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER STUDY FINDINGS–FIVE Inexpensive Ways to Get Your Omega-3s.
We all need essential fatty acids, including omega-3 fatty acids, for optimum health. I recommend eating several servings of oily fish, such as wild Alaskan salmon, per week as a dietary strategy to help decrease the risk of heart disease, inflammatory conditions, cancer and other health concerns. However, if you find fresh or frozen wild Alaskan salmon is too expensive, try these economical choices:

1. Canned salmon. Sockeye salmon is always wild-caught, costs less than fresh or frozen salmon, and has the added benefit of the canning process, which softens the bones, making them an edible source of calcium.
2. Canned sardines. Another fish-based source of omega-3s, choose sardines packed in water or olive oil.
3. Walnuts. A good vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids that promote cardiovascular health and tone down inflammation, and contain ellagic acid, an antioxidant compound that helps support a healthy immune system and that may help protect against cancer.
4. Freshly ground flaxseed contains both omega-3s and soluble fiber. Grind flaxseed daily in a coffee grinder at home (buy one specifically for this purpose) and sprinkle one to two tablespoons a day on salads or cereals.
5. High quality omega-3 supplement. Available in liquid or capsule forms, fish oil helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure, nourish the nervous system and promote optimal outlook. Look for products that are certified free of contaminants, and begin with small daily doses, building up to the recommended amount.

CONNECTING WITH JAPAN–  The devastating earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan on March 11 has already killed thousands of people, and the full effects have yet to play out. The long-term damage to human health from radiation leaks at the Fukishima nuclear power plants will take years, perhaps decades, to manifest.

I feel this tragedy deeply. Since my first visit to Japan as a teenager in 1959, I have felt a powerful connection to its culture, aesthetics and people. In the years since, I have been back more times than I can recall. As much as I enjoy the vibrant cacophony of modern, urban Japan, I am particularly drawn to its venues of timeless serenity.

I am encouraged that the hallmarks of the Japanese character – a reverence for hard work, family, tradition and beauty – will ultimately bring that great nation back from the horror that now engulfs it. Please do what you can to help by donating at the American Red Cross website. In the meantime, here are some photos of trips I have been fortunate enough to make to Japan in recent years.

D&D PERFORMANCE EXHAUST BUILDS BAGGER PIPES– Fabricator Robbie Closson pulled all the levers to produce this gorgeous bagger. Robbie and his team decided to take the 2010 Harley Road Glide to the next level. They ordered a 26″ Racine from HHI and started with the mock up stages of the bike. They wanted to do something different with the fairing, so Robbie came up with the idea to mold a Hayabusa headlight into the fairing, and from they we went crazy with this bike.

They molded the whole outer fairing together as one piece, windshield and all, which they now we sell the one- piece Street Glide fairing and windshield.

Power is delivered by a built a 124″ motor using Revolution Performance engine components, and had everything powder coated black with diamond cut treatment on the fins. After they decided to run the Procharger, they ordered a couple different inner coolers, but could not find one we liked, so we had our in-house fabricator build us one. The team integrated the inner cooler into the frame, and built a nice air dam around it, which is molded into the frame as well.

The exhaust system is a D&D Fat Cat performance pipe, which is used on a lot of ProCharger units because of sound, tone and what everyone is looking for: performance.
Check out the pipes for your Bagger at D&D.

A Texas State Trooper was patrolling late at night off the main highway.
He sees a couple in a car, with the interior light brightly glowing. He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a magazine.  He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the trooper walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window.

The young man lowers his window. ‘Uh, yes, Officer’?

The trooper asks: ‘What are you doing’?

The young man says: ‘Well, Officer, I’m reading a magazine’.

Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat the trooper says: ‘And her…what is she doing’?

The young man shrugs: ‘Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails’.

Now, the trooper is totally confused.

A young couple, alone, in a car, at night in a lover’s lane ….
And nothing obscene is happening!

The trooper asks: ‘What’s your age, young man’?

The young man says: ‘I’m 22, sir’.

The trooper asks: ‘And her, …. what’s her age’?

The young man looks at his watch and replies:

‘She’ll be 18 in 11 minutes.. ‘

S&S CHECK INTO NEW ENGINE FINISHES–  SUMAX is now working with S&S Cycle to offer a new finish on a choice of three of the company’s engines.

The company is now able to offer two versions of the new S&S T111 for ’99-’06 Harley-Davidson Big Twin applications. The first version is called ‘Black and Chrome’ and begins with Sumax de-burring the motor cases in preparation for a high gloss black finish. The heads and cylinder fins are polished along with the S&S logo for a contrast against the black finish. Then the oil pump, cover, lifter blocks and intake manifold are also powder-coated. Additionally, chrome rockers, pushrod covers, intake and nose cone are powder-coated.

The second version, ‘Candy Red Monochromatic’, sees the cases, heads and cylinders de-burred and polished prior to the powder-coating, with a silver metallic base coat followed by a candy red top coat.

The final engine in the range is the S&S KN-Series, which resembles a stock knucklehead. With this model Sumax powder-coats the fins a silver that contrasts against the Solar flat black powder coat. The same effect is then done with the kidney nose cone cover. Silver coated rocker bolts and the S&S logo on the air cleaner cover add more contrast.

WEEKEND WARM-UP–Tomorrow I’ll roll over to meet Virginia “Dago” Day, who was a Boozette (she was actually an active member of the Booze Fighters) during the ’40s, and she has the photos to prove it. She delivered blueprints in downtown LA on a trike back in the day. She is now in her 80s. Bob McMillen, who was a member of the Yellow Jackets, and was raising hell in Hollister in 1947 called me. I quoted him in my Motorbooks forward.

I will wait to hear from Darwin Holmstrom this weekend, the book editor, then go for a ride, and maybe interview a new pinstriper about some work on the Hearse and around the headquarters.

Looks like I sold my Muffler Master tube bender to help a guy open his own muffler shot. “It’s the only tool I had to have,” said Arron York. “I’ve got everything lined up but that, and they’re expensive.”

Finally, I will dig up more outlaw shots for the Discovery story in the Cantina. And hang on for more wild party girls this weekend in the Sunday Post. Let’s get the hell outta here.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
