THURSDAY NEWS LINE-UP FOR 2012

Hey,

This is a helluva News column. We’re two weeks into the new year and the Playoff games are raging. Bike shows from IMS, and Easyriders, are rocking every weekend. The Grand National Roadster Show is coming right up. It’s amazing how many activities are flourishing across the country.

If only we can keep the government off our backs, restrict the restrictors, and build for the future. Somewhere down the line Freedom needs to become a priority, and regulators need to see the light and get over the control freak mentality.

I spoke to Jeff Kraus today. Jeff is completely devoted to motorcycling and Operation Gratitude for service folks. He attempted to promote events in Northern California and was jacked up and put out of business by extortion tactics from police agencies, and county governments. Some of these towns are now out of business and broke. It’s sad that we give folks the level of power and control, then they fuck with folks who are just trying to make a living, and bring business into their towns. Snooze ya lose.

I received a report from the Las Vegas Auction extravaganza happening this weekend. There are a lot of wealthy car guys in town who are pushing the prices to the moon. A Henderson motor brought $26,000, more than a fully restored motorcycle would bring usually. An Indian Ace motor drew $20,000, and a very rough ’09 Indian worth $16,000 was sold for $32,000. Let’s hit the news:

DETROIT ULTIMATE BUILDER COMPETITION–  FREESTYLE–Gary Lipton said use your imagination… and Steve Broyles from Stevenson’s Cycle built the GL Special based on a number of ideas that he had in the back of his mind. The primary inspiration was his Schwinn Flyer that he rode over god’s creation as a kid. You can see that reflected in the wide handlebars. The heart of the matter is a S&S 93ci mil with fully polished split rocker boxes and cooling fins. The fins required 3 months of work to complete.

Broyles used his signature glass side oil tank that is built like a wedge, brass foot and hand controls. The frame is a custom fabricated rigid bobber unit. The GL Special also sports an Evil LSD Belt Drive. As you walk up to the bike, the paint grabs your attention. It was sprayed by Darren Williams of Liquid Illusion Art.

PERFORMANCE CUSTOM

Jack McCoy of M43 Powersports rolled in his 2008 B-King beast named Inferno. The first thing you notice on the bike is the true flames paint job. It is expertly applied by Centerfold Customs. The front 21” wheel on ultra-low profile tire combined with the 300mm rear delivers an aggressive stance. Hanging off either side of the front end are two huge turbos that deliver a gut-checking 550HP. Additional enhancements includes custom engine parts and an industrial-strength single swingarm.

RETRO MOD

Steve Hollon of Gogatha Cycles delivered General Grunge to the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show and he came away with a win in the Retro Mod class. The 1987 Sportster features items from your typical build, drop seat, canteen, infantry helmet, dual grenades and camouflage paint. Cliff Weller of Centerfold Customs provided the paint.

MOD Harley

After High School Kirk Schubert’s sister received a 4 year college degree and after he graduated he received the keys to a Harley Fat Boy. Through the years the 1997 Fat Boy has gone through a number of iterations and has metamorphosed to its final design called the Shoobdville Bagger. It sports an 88ci mil with hand shift, ape hangers, lakester pipe and a sweet paint job by Ronnie Harris of Chop Doc Choppers. Ronnie also performed the fabrication work. The cherry on top is the brass shifter from the executive offices of the now defunct Cadillac Hotel.

People’s Choice

Giovanni of Blacksmith Motoring Co. takes People’s Choice with their 2003 stroked Suzuki Volusia named El Patron. The bike comes complete with nitrous, pistons and cams. It has 4 degrees of rake, remote air ride and performance suspension.

V-ROD PROJECT RE-DUX– Here my latest finished project. The 2004 V-Rod Re-Dux.

http://www.behance.net/gallery/2004-V-Rod-Redux/2831163
2004 V-Rod Redux A Little Colour comes to the original Dark Knight.

The original inspiration for the Night Rod Special Edition was looking a little dated, so I thought to add a little colour and some custom badge work to the original Dark Knight. As well, I updated the hand grips and foot pegs with Harley’s latest offerings, as well as the turn signals which are from Rizoma. All are LEDs.

Rizoma also makes an interesting licence plate holder, complete with lighting, so I included this in this ‘Re-Dux’.

DISCOVERED IN NEW ZEALAND, HOME OF WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN–
New Zealand has a reputation as an interesting place of unparalleled beauty. Well, it is and I think most people know that. What I personally found just as interesting is that it is a land of motor heads. I have never seen a population so fascinated by anything with an engine and they will race anything, anywhere in any weather.

I was standing in NZ with Fab Kevin on the side of a twisting mountain road, with no guardrails, in the pouring rain, as men and women raced on a twisting road. Kevin and I kind of wondered how hard it had to rain to cancel the race and the old guy we asked just said, “Well you got to learn to race in the rain sometime,” and I think that was the theme of the visit…

See the whole story about this discovery in the Digital Discovery section of Bandit’s Cantina.

CALIFA BIKERS PROTEST HELMET LAW–
SACRAMENTO – Bikers from across California descended on the South Side steps of the Capitol building at 10:30 a.m. Monday to support two bills that would modify the state’s helmet law and banish motorcycle-only checkpoints.

The gathering was the 2012 installment of the yearly Motorcycle Rally for all motorcycles, riders and passengers held by the American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education (ABATE).

One of the bills in question, Assembly 1047, would prohibit the use of any Federal, State or other highway safety funds to be used for selective motorcycle-only enforcement violations.

The second, Assembly Bill 695, would make licensed motorcycle drivers above 18 years of age who complete a safety training meeting exempt from the current helmet law. California currently requires all motorcycle riders and passengers to wear CHP approved helmets while driving on California roadways.

The Assembly Bills were heard at the Capitol Building at 1 p.m

STURGIS DRAGS CHANGES HANDS–There’s excitement brewing in the Black Hills. Billy McCahill, from Spyke and STD added another project to their 2012 list. Not only do they attempt to build high-quality electric starters for everything that moves, but they bought STD and are trying to revive the classic brand. Soon they will manufacture everything from cast aluminum finned primaries for tin applications (available now), to all variations of V-twin cases, and they are about to go live with Panheads in virtually any configuration, such as Evo intakes.

Billy is about to wrap up the necessary agreements to take over the Sturgis Dragway, and he has exciting plans. We will bring you more news on the Sturgis Drag Races in the next couple of months.

THIS NOTE JUST IN FROM THE FBI, FEDERAL BIKERNET INVESTIGATORS–Exactly what are people stealing? Ad Week has compiled the top 10 most shoplifted items of 2011 and they’re truly bizarre.

1. Filet mignon
So many people are tucking choice cuts of meats under their jackets that supermarkets are now considered the stores with the most theft.

2. Jameson
Those with an unquenchable thirst for booze just help themselves to a free bottle of expensive liquor.

3. Electric tools
Apparently the the most common items men nab are electric toothbrushes and power tools. At least they’re fighting cavities.

4. iPhone 4
Electronics like smartphones and video games are high risk items, and one research group claims 100,000 laptops are stolen annually from big box stores.

5. Gillette Mach 4
Anyone who uses non-disposable razors knows they’re pretty expensive, so in tough financial times people don’t want to pay for them anymore.

6. Axe
The men’s deodorant and body wash we love to hate are often stolen in mass quantities and resold at flea markets and corner stores. Dial is popular amongst thieves too.

7. Polo Ralph Lauren
Clothing theft is up 31 percent since 2009. It’s hard to look good in a bad economy, so some score fresh threads the illegal way.

8. Let’s Rock Elmo
The Sesame Street toy topped the Toys’R’Us “Hot Toys” list this year, so parents are stealing this must-have toy for their kids if they can’t afford it.

9. Chanel No. 5
Who wouldn’t love a bottle of this popular woman’s fragrance? Expensive perfumes make up nearly four percent of loss in stores that carry them.

10. Nikes
As Ad Week points out, some shoppers wear flip-flops into a store, try on a pair of sneakers, and walk out wearing them. Sneaker heads will do whatever it takes to score the kicks on their wish list.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE BIKE BUILDING PROJECT–Building a bike from the ground up is just that, you don’t have a motorcycle to begin with. It means collecting parts and assembling them into one complete running machine. It is not like a manufacturing plant, where you have detailed build sheets and your parts are carefully inventory so that the part you need is always there, always on time.

Building a bike at home means you are the mercy of your suppliers. The parts for my bike have been a slow collection of miscellaneous parts over the years, but I don’t have quite a complete bike yet. During my mock up I found that the bars I have in stock do not fit me or look right on the bike. It is a minor set back, as I already know which bars I want. That’s the problem I faced this week. Finding bars for my bike should be as simple as calling up my supplier and having them sent out. Unfortunately, Custom Chrome, one of my main suppliers has locked me out of my dealer account and my other suppliers do not have the bars I want in stock. Now what?

Yes, I could bend some bars, but my well-equipped shop is not quite that well equipped. I could change it up and simply put on a different bend of bars but after having my heart set on one particular style of bars, it is hard to settle for drag bars or ape hangers like everyone else in the crowd.

So, here I sit pounding away at a keyboard when I could be in the garage spinning wrenches, waiting for my Custom Chrome rep to get back to me to unlock my account, waiting for the bars so I can figure out what risers to order, waiting on the risers so I know what length of cables to order, waiting and waiting.

THE WARREN BUFFET SUGGESTION FOR FIXING CONGRESS–from a CNBC interview.
_*Congressional Reform Act of 2012*_
1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they’re out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the
American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Don’t you think it’s time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

TERRY THE TRAMP REVIEW FOR THUNDER PRESS– The Life and Dangerous Times of a One Percenter by K. Randall Ball
MBI Publishing Company
$27.00, 272 pp.
www.motorbooks.com
www.bikernet.com

Reviewed by Bill Hayes

Author Keith Ball is a true legend in this lifestyle—both on the media end of things and on the road as a serious hard-butt rider and builder.

His many years as editor of Easyriders magazine proved his abilities in the media; his work after that solidified his high position. With books on building a record-breaking Bonneville bike to his cool fiction novels featuring the ever-dashing character, Chance Hogan, Keith covers so many corners of this lifestyle and he does it so well.

In Terry the Tramp: The Life and Dangerous Times of a One Percenter, K. Randall Ball presents the true chronicles of Terry “The Tramp” Orendorff, the man who served as President of the powerful Vagos Motorcycle Club for such a long time.

These kinds of intimate profiles in the biker community are important. When we are allowed into the lives of men like Terry, we see the absolute definition of the phrase “a way of life.” We see just how these beloved machines are truly so much more than just machines. We see just how this culture is truly so much more—at least for some of us—than a hobby or a casual sometimes thing for a weekend warrior.

And we see it not only through the eyes of Terry but through the eyes of so many others in the edgy circles he has traveled in as well: “I was drawn to this group,” Rat said. “I realized almost right away that I didn’t want to study this way of life; I wanted to live it. It was the only example that I can think of in which this society allows us to choose our own family, and that’s what a club is: a family.”

Another of the best things about Terry the Tramp is the way K. Randall Ball gives the reader not only insight into Terry and his associates’ lives, but provides such a great feel for the time periods and eras that the book and the life of Terry cover. Biographers often focus too much on their subject, getting lost in the minutiae of each and every detail of their lives instead of concentrating on the parts of those lives that made their subject worthy of a biography in the first place.

Keith Ball doesn’t tell us what Terry had for breakfast when he was three or what color his first pair of long pants were. No. Instead, Keith gives us the facts about Terry’s life that actually have bearing on what and who he was to become:

“It was tough to rumble around a small town, especially when all the cops knew you, knew you were under-age, and that you had no license. Besides, the motorcycle wasn’t registered and had no plate or tags.”

Those are “interesting” and meaningful details.

Terry the Tramp is also an education into the overall cat-and-mouse game that is nearly universal when it comes to law enforcement versus motorcycle clubs.

The book gets quite specific—again, with some poignant pertinent details—when it describes the landmark litigation battles that the Vagos and police agencies fought out in court. This was some heavy stuff that established and exposed a paddy wagon of precedents in the way that law enforcement legally—and sometimes not-so-legally—interacts with the clubs.

And in light of all those in-court battles, some very strong truths surfaced: “Clubs like the Hells Angels, the Vagos, and the Bandidos represent a direct threat to the state’s monopoly on the use of violence because they are, in many ways, organized armies not controlled by the state. Thus they are a threat to the state, whether they are cooking meth and running prostitution operations or giving blood and hosting toy runs. The threat from a motorcycle club is not the club’s criminal activity; the threat from a motorcycle club is the club’s very existence. Because of this, the state will hound a motorcycle club relentlessly, even if the only crimes committed are committed by the state itself in the act of persecuting the club.”

Terry the Tramp: The Life and Dangerous Times of a One Percenter goes many levels further than just the life story of El Monte–born Terry Orendorff. It’s a history and a commentary on this entire lifestyle and just how much clubs like the Vagos and men like Terry the Tramp have influenced it.

THE MYSTERY OF CAPTAIN AMERICA BIKES UNFOLDS–We have the opportunity to interview the original builder of the bikes for the movie Easy Riders, but it’s turning into a search for the real bikes.

Things are lining up, Mil Blair told me Fonda and Hopper built 3-5 bikes for promos. Here’s a quote from a former owner of a Capt. America Panhead, ” I also found some receipts,” said Tiberas. “I sold the bike to a guy named Larry Ameen in Dallas in ’93.”

You’ll see the whole story or two in the Cantina.

WHY I’M DEPRESSED!!–
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , “Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land.”*

Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, “Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land.”

Today, Congress has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc . .. . I called a Suicide Hotline…..I had to press 1 for English.
I was connected to a call center in Pakistan . I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck……Folks, we’re screwed

WEST COAST CHOPPERS BUILDING SOLD–
LONG BEACH — An Orange County company has purchased the Long Beach property where celebrity motorcycle builder Jesse James filmed much of his “Monster Garage” reality show and is planning to put it on the market this month.

AMBC Partners LP, a limited partnership based in Newport Beach, purchased the 718 W. Anaheim St. property in November, said Russ Werdin of Werdin Corp., the company involved in renovating the building. According to the Dataquick property records website, AMBC purchased the building and adjacent parking lot for $400,000, which was about half of the property’s assessed value.

Built in 1948, the distressed 12,380-square-foot property purchased by AMBC from Bank of America had been vacant since late 2010.
The developer spent eight weeks renovating the building “from stem to stern” with new roof, carpeting and remediation, he said.

“We’ve put a lot of TLC into it,” Werdin said, adding that there is already some interest from potential buyers. “If Jesse came back, he wouldn’t recognize it.”

City officials even renamed the stretch of street next to the business, changing it from Oregon Avenue to “West Coast Choppers Place” between Anaheim and 12 th streets, but recently changed the name back.

James’ company, Mighty Whitey LLC, still owns the 1920 building at 702 W. Anaheim St., according to property records.

BIKERNET SUPER SECRET BONNEVILLE 2013 PROJECT TEASER–
I understand we have mutual interest in the trike architecture and set some landmarks namely in establishing potential performance related world records.

As you may know our V13R uses the V-ROD engine and is fully street legal in most states in the USA. It follows some of the architectural design of the proven T-REX but is nevertheless a ground up design.

I have attached a short article that was written on us from a local magazine called Revolution, it will give a bit of insights as to who we are and what we do.

Now as far as setting some records…. As discussed with the Triking Viking, I was just chatting with one of our customer that put about 7,000 miles on his ride this year and recently added a Turbo.
From an original 105 hp at the wheel he pumped it up to 187 ponys…. Here’s a very recent You tube video showing some bench test performance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_o-uRCEmeY

Our official channel for the V13R is the following
http://www.youtube.com/user/campagnamotors/videos?view=pl

We have another guy that has a Supercharger solution locally that will pump from 60 to 100 HP….

We have built about 55 of those machines in 2011, it was soft launched during that year.

Looking forward to your feedback.

ROVING ROGUE ATTENDS PROTEST FOR ROADSIDE STOPS–While in Las Vegas I had the opportunity to attend the protest for Roadside Stops. In this case it was for cell phone use.
While cell phone use is a hot subject and something bikers support, these guys were protesting roadside stops.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2012/jan/08/checkpoint-draws-protestors-opposed-method-not-mes/

Checkpoint draws protesters opposed to the method, but not the message

David Stilwell and a band of motorcyclists parked their bikes Friday afternoon close to the Long John Silver’s on Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway. Nearby, a group of Metro Police — also on motorcycles — waited.

Stilwell, joined by about 10 of his friends wearing black leather jackets, some with firearms resting in holsters on their hips, stood along the sidewalk waving signs that read “Police Checkpoint Ahead.”

But up ahead wasn’t a typical DUI checkpoint; the officers on Flamingo Road were pulling over drivers on cellphones.

“Police enforcement should be up front,” said Stilwell, of Las Vegas.

Stilwell’s beef was with police checkpoints in general, not the new law that prohibits motorists from texting or talking on cellphones while driving.

“I see people with a full bowl of cereal with milk in it on their way to work,” said Stilwell, adding that there is no law that keeps drivers from eating on the run.

The signs served to warn drivers, Stilwell said. “We’re not breaking the law.”

Sgt. Peter Kisfalvi, with Metro’s traffic section, agreed the group wasn’t breaking the law.

During the week, officers made around 260 stops and wrote more than 230 citations, said Kisfalvi, adding that his unit arrested a person with a felony warrant, another for misdemeanor offenses and another for DUI.

“The message of ‘hang up and drive’ is much more important then writing a citation,” he said. “I’d rather not write the citation.”

At one time we looked at communist countries and pointed at checkpoints as an indication of restricted freedoms, now they are spreading across our nation in various forms: DUI, motorcycle, and now cell phone use. Watch, it will become another government intrusion gone wrong.–Wilburn Roach

CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST VAGOS’ PRESIDENT– SAN BERNARDINO – County prosecutors have dismissed criminal charges against Pastor Palafox, the international president of the Vagos motorcycle club.

Palafox, 47, had been charged with vehicle theft involving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, possession of the stolen motorcycle and street terrorism. He was among several Vagos members whose arrests were announced last year at a news conference at the San Bernardino Police Department.

However, during a hearing Tuesday in San Bernardino Superior Court, Deputy District Attorney Steve Sanchez announced the charges against Palafox had been dropped. Prosecutors would not say why, citing an ongoing investigation.

Defense attorney Joseph Yanny, who represented Palafox, said later that prosecutors lacked probable cause to pursue a case. The motorcycle was part of a sale that had evolved into a civil dispute, and the alleged victim said it wasn’t stolen, he said.

“Hat’s off to Steve Sanchez for seeing the folly of prosecuting this decent man,” said Yanny, outside the courthouse. The lack of probable cause was revealed during requests for discovery, or evidence, from prosecutors, he said.

Two co-defendants in the case, Scott Rivera of San Bernardino, and Caesar Rodriguez of Oak Hills, continue to face charges and are scheduled to return to court Feb. 14.

The defendants were arrested in connection with an 18-month, seven-county investigation into the “upper echelon” of Vagos members by state and local authorities.

Hundreds of handguns and other weapons, including an anti-tank weapon and a rocket launcher, as well as body armor, cocaine, methamphetamine and Vagos clothing were seized by law enforcement officers.

Palafox, of Colton, said taxpayers’ money, which was spent to prosecute him, could have been used in better ways. “Because there was a lot of money wasted here,” he said.

Charges were dismissed in November against Andrew Lozano of Fontana, who was accused of possessing body armor and participating in a street gang. Thomas Henry Gibson of San Bernardino, pleaded no contest in November to possession of marijuana.

Prosecutors, however, say the Vagos investigation was successful.

DON’T MISS THIS, A GOVERNOR WHO UNDERSTANDS FREEDOM–Read the last line from the Governor who is a member of Abate and will veto bill if it passes.

http://www.foxcarolina.com/story/16492786/gov-haley-promises-to-veto-motorcycle-helmet-law Gov. Haley promises to veto motorcycle helmet law

The first day of South Carolina’s legislature had motorcyclists taking notice. Many are revved up over a bill that would require them to wear a helmet.

Sen. Ralph Anderson (D-Greenville) filed a bill last month that would change the language of the current helmet law from only requiring riders under 21 to wear a helmet to include all motorcycle riders.

Anderson said the numbers of fatalities last year speak volumes and that it’s the legislature’s responsibility to keep South Carolina drivers – and riders – safe.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said that in 2011, there were 23 motorcycle fatalities in Greenville, Pickens, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Oconee counties alone. Officials said every one of those was somehow caused by the biker.

Highway Patrol said across the state, motorcycle fatalities have jumped. In 2011, there were 102, compared to 82 in 2010.

Some bikers say helmets can block vision or hearing, making it difficult to navigate while riding.

“I believe in helmets,” said Stacey Major, the general manager of Harley Davidson of Greenville. “I believe that they do save lives, and we encourage everybody to wear a helmet while they’re out riding, but we also feel that wearing helmets is freedom of choice.”

ABATE is a motorcycle rights advocacy group, and about 100 riders made their way to the capital Tuesday morning.

Bob Baxter is the Upstate coordinator who said his helmet caused him to get into a wreck, but he said it has never prevented a wreck.

Gov. Nikki Haley, a member of a Lexington County’s ABATE, told bikers at the statehouse that the senate has more important matters to focus on. She told them to tell their legislators, “Don’t waste your time,” because even if it does pass, she’ll veto the bill.

Comanchero in court over shooting at Cafe Paesanno in North Adelaide– POLICE have arrested a second man over the Comanchero bikie shooting outside Caffe Paesano restaurant last month. The man, 23, of Para Hills, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today charged with one aggravated count of acts to endanger life and one of possessing a handgun.
His identity has been suppressed to allow police time to perform identification checks with witnesses at the scene of the Caffe Paesano incident on December 18. He did not apply for bail.

The man was arrested on a bench warrant in Melbourne last Friday and was extradited to Adelaide yesterday. The court heard the bench warrant was issued over a District Court matter that was listed for trial in August. Judge Rosemary Davey vacated that trial date when she issued a warrant of apprehension for the man five days before it was due to start.

He has previously pleaded not guilty to one aggravated charge of causing harm with intent to cause harm for an alleged stabbing in Adelaide on November 2, 2008.
Police will allege the man is an associate of the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang.

Today, Sergeant Robert Binnekamp, prosecuting, said there were 36 witnesses to speak to with regard to the North Adelaide shooting.” It will be a photo identification, not a formal line-up, so we have to prepare the relevant documentation,” he said.

Laura Parham, for the man, said his identity should be suppressed to prevent the potential of prejudicing jurors in the District Court trial. Throughout today’s hearing the man smiled at supporters in the body of the court. The court heard he is also facing three charges in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court, including threatening to kill and aggravated theft, over an alleged incident in June last year.
He was remanded in custody to appear again in March.
On December 29, Crime Gangs Task Force officers arrested a Salisbury man, 24, in relation to the same shooting and charged him with acts to endanger life. He was arrested at a Henley Beach South home without incident.

“Police believe the two men arrested are those who fired the shots in the Caffe Paesano incident,” a spokesman said. Shortly after 9.30pm on Sunday, December 18, a gunman approached three men associated with the Comancheros bikie gang who were sitting outside the popular North Adelaide cafe.

Witnesses told The Advertiser he opened fire at the men with a small handgun but one of the Comancheros produced a pistol and returned fire, hitting the man in the leg. The Commanchero then chased his attacker along O’Connell St in to Tynte St firing shots before both men fled into hiding.

Police said they believed an internal feud between the men led to the shooting and it was linked to the shooting of former South Australian Comancheros’ president Vincenzo Focarelli a few days earlier.

Focarelli has been dumped by national Comancheros’ bosses amid claims he had been siphoning drug profits. An internal power struggle is said to have erupted within the Comancheros as some members loyal to Focarelli rebel against the reported national order to dump him. Focarelli has denied that a power struggle existed.

THE FIRST OFFICIAL BIKERNET GOLFBALL SALESMAN–Our sales associate got on the bus with both of his front trouser pockets full of golf balls and sat down next to a beautiful (you guessed it) blonde. The puzzled blonde kept looking at him and his bulging pockets.

Finally, after many glances from her, he said, “It’s golf balls.”

The blonde continued to look at him for a very long time, thinking deeply about what he had said.

After several minutes, not being able to contain her curiosity any longer, she asked,

“Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow ?”

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–Best shot with a 1911
While compiling the timeline for Pistol of the Century, our tribute to the 1911 in the June issue of Field & Stream, I read through many accounts of the 1911 in combat. The most unusual shot,(and possibly the best ever) made in wartime with a 1911 pistol had to be the one fired by a USAAF B-24 co-pilot named Owen J. Baggett in March, 1943 in the skies over Burma. Of course, I am biased toward this one as it involves a flying target . . .

On a mission to destroy a railroad bridge, Baggett’s bomber squadron was intercepted by Japanese Zero fighters and his plane was badly damaged. After holding off the enemy with the top turret .50s while the gunner tried to put out onboard fires, Baggett bailed out with the rest of the crew. He and four others escaped the burning bomber before it exploded.

The Zero pilots circled back to strafe the parachuting crewmen, killing two and lightly wounding Baggett, who played dead in his harness, hoping the Japanese would leave him alone. Though playing dead, Baggett still drew his .45 and hid it alongside his leg…just in case. A Zero approached within a few feet of Baggett at near stall speeds. The pilot opened the canopy for a better look at his victim.

Baggett raised his pistol and fired four shots into the cockpit. The Zero spun out of sight. Although Baggett could never believe he had shot down a fighter plane with his pistol, at least one credible report said the plane was found crashed, the pilot thrown clear of the wreckage with a single bullet in his head.

If Baggett really did shoot down a fighter with his 1911, it has to count as one of the greatest feats ever accomplished with a .45.

Baggett survived two years in a Japanese prison camp in Singapore and eventually retired from the Air Force as a colonel.

FULL MOON LAST NIGHT–Eerie shit happens. You wouldn’t believe where we live. Our old 1923 model building is right on the Port of Los Angeles. We are on the corner of downtown Wilmington, a small third world country between San Pedro and Long Beach. Talk to any longshoreman. They hate this place. It’s industrial and rough.

On the south side of us in Harry Bridges Boulevard, the largest, busiest street in Wilmington. January of last year the city kicked off widening the street from our corner west to Figueroa. They dug trenches and installed all electrical and communications underground. They tore down all the telephone poles and we built benches out of the cross members.

Because of the street construction the port was forced to reroute all the truck traffic through the port and out via our intersection of Broad and Harry Bridges. HB turns into Alameda a block east of here. The Alameda Corridor is the conduit that takes every product entering the port to every LA based distribution center, or onto freeways out of Dodge. So, just outside our building all shit broke loose with construction and truck traffic. We’ve dealt with rattling windows and constant noise for a year, then U.S. Tow took over the property next door, on the north side of our building.

This crew is run by a rider, and one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever met. Get this: He’s turning this tin building, and large asphalt, 2.5 lots, into a LAPD impound yard, investigation facility. He tore down most of the tin buildings, and we ended up with enough steel to build a killer deck, but the noise is incredible from dawn to nearly midnight every day. He’s facing some sort of deadline and working his ass off to open the facility on time. Jack hammers rattle the thin asphalt every day, compressors roar, welders buzz, trucks beep as they back up and the earth shakes on the north side of us.

I’m sure glad it’s Thursday and I can have a shot of Jack after the news is launched. We almost wired my son’s Mudflap Girl FXR on Tuesday. He’s started bitchin’ at me.

“I wanted forward controls,” Frank said over and over.

Fuckin’ kids. These mid controls have always been a pain in the ass, so I reached out to Paul Cavallo for the weld-on frame pieces.

“Sure I have them,” Paul said. “Send Frank out. We are cutting new forward controls.” The mid controls were turning into a major hassle. We installed the motion pro, Biker’s Choice clutch cable and the damn thing ran smack into the mid controls. Anytime I needed to open the primary, all the mid controls needed to be removed. It’s all good.

By the end of the month Frank’s bike will be running and the street widening will be completed, and I’ll bet Gary’s facility will be renovated and operational. Wild in the Wilmington streets.

Have a helluva weekend,

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
