‘Tis The Season Sunday Post

Hey,

I was going to piss and moan about the holidays getting in the way of building motorcycles and making progress. We need some more Progressive travel limiters for our new 430 13-inch shocks. We need some James Panhead tins gaskets to wrap up the Salt Shaker. We’re burnin’ daylight.

Plus, I thought this news was destine to be lackluster and short, like I could take a break. But not so. Interesting informative shit, below.

I need to shift back to my Son’s Mudflap girl FXR. I told Frank the ride to Sturgis was mandatory this year, the year of the FXR.

So, holidays don’t suck. In fact they force me to slow down, sorta. This weekend we worked on bikes, we published a new Girl of Bikernet from Michael Farabaugh, I did interviews for two book projects, including the next Chance Hogan Book, and now the Sunday Post. Never a dull moment.

THOSE FAMOUS LAST WORDS–  “I’m just glad it’ll be Clark Gable who’s falling on his face and not Gary Cooper,” — Gary Cooper on his decision not to take the leading role in “Gone With The Wind.”

“A cookie store is a bad idea. Besides, the market research reports say America likes crispy cookies, not soft and chewy cookies like you make,”

— Response to Debbi Fields’ idea of starting Mrs. Fields’ Cookies.

“We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out,”

— Decca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles, 1962.

FXR Mudflap Girl UPDATE FROM THE PERFORMANCE EDITOR–
After a few more in-shop heat cycles on Bandit’s brand spankin new Evo motor that’s equipped with a set of Branch O’Keefe Co. heads. The Evo motor, built by S&S for H-D and hopped-up by Master Mechanic Eric Bennett at Bennett’s Performance in Signal Hill is headed for a roll in the fast lane, after a custom seat by Saddlemen.

Bandit’s sleek, Mud Flap lane-splitter-deluxe has a date with Saddleman for a one-off seat. Then tags, insurance and the proper paperwork.

Seems that every needless government free loading agency is holding their gnarly hand out for a piece of the raisin pie that’s still in the oven without any heat. Next thing ya know the bastards will want the pie pan too.

Is it time to saddle up and head for the hills? WTF, more throttle and ride for your life! Get out on the edge every now and then, open those adrenaline glands WFO.

That’s Life in the fast lane! Bikernet style!

Frank’s FXR

Another project that’s nearing the finish line. Frank’s hot rod needs a couple of nights of tender lovin’ care. UPS delivered the Crane push rods, S&S carb w/air cleaner, Crane cam and lifters for the hop-up build.

Sturgis, The Elixir of Life!

Frank’s FXR, yet another Bikernet shop project that will blaze a dusty trail in 2012, hub to hub at warp speeds with Bandit’s sexy Mud Flap Girl, in the quest of Black Hills magic. Destination Sturgis, South Dakota.

Look for the Bikernet crew on Lazelle across from the new Easyriders in the Bikernet/Cycle Source lot.

STREET WALKER AND ENVY CYCLES CHECKS IN–  A couple of years ago you featured a bike I built for an Az. Swat officer, Troy Lepird. The bike was a tough little rigid with a 120″ motor that Troy dubbed The Bully.

Troy loved being around our shop and wanted to learn some metal fabrication. He took a couple of welding courses at a community college and we started working on making a few things around the shop.I had Troy do a bunch of welding excercises and I watched his Tig welding skills develop rapidly.
I suggested that we actually make something so he could apply his newly learned welding skills along with a little metal stretching so we decided we’d build a gas tank together and see where it took us. The gas tank came out pretty cool so we decided to build a bike around it.

Troy was interested in cafe racers, liked Buells, and I hadn’t built a racer type bike in a lot of years so it seemed like an interesting project. Here are a few pics of what we came up with just beforewe broke it down for paint, powder and plating.

Yeah, working on a Bonneville project sounds like it might be interesting I believe I’d like that. You’d just have to allow we a little more time than usual. I’m not as fast as I used to be, kinda like that country song “I’m not as good now as I once was but I’m as good once, as I ever was.”

HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

David Gillespie of Vee-Tone Records said: “This is a truly unique and historic collection. Whilst many of the records individually will have been heard before, together they give a remarkable insight into Elvis’ life and musical influences. Every time you press ‘play’ to listen to this collection, you are recreating a moment in time; a moment in Elvis’ life when he would press ‘play’ on his personal jukebox in Graceland.”

SCOTT JACOBS ANNOUNCES NEW MOTORCYCLE SERIES–  Throughout Scott Jacobs experience as Harley-Davidson’s official fine artist, which now spans almost nineteen years, he has been fortunate to have traveled the world exhibiting his artworks. Scott’s motorcycle paintings have become legendary. Witnessing the motorcycle world intimately for so long and with such diversity has created a yearning in Scott to tie it all together.

In retrospect, learning the subject is the most integral part of the equation in creative arts; especially for a painter. History is the best teacher and over the past few years Scott has become more intrigued by the importance of the motorcycle and especially by its lineage. From transportation to recreation, sport (racing) to military uses, the motorcycle has also created a subculture of unique personalities, attitudes and identities, n ot to mention the pinnacle of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Scott Jacobs’ kinship with vintage bikes has inspired him to paint the “HISTORY OF THE MOTORCYCLE” series. Rather than being a comprehensive retrospective of all genres of bikes this series will include only those bikes which are most appealing to Scott as true works of art. For each painting he will create a limited edition of only 40 examples on canvas plus 5 APs and 5 HCs. Dimensions are approximately 14 x 22 (same size as original painting).

Framing will add about seven inches each way. Numbers will be assigned on a first come, first served basis and you will be guaranteed your matched number on subsequent images of the series. Pre-publication price: $745 or $995 including custom frame. The first three images are shown here as Scott’s photo-research… can you guess what the make of the fourth bike might be?

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RELEASES THE WORD ON WINE AND CHEESE--Are Wine and Cheese Healthy? One satisfying way to celebrate nourishing the body is with a glass of red wine and some cheese. The health benefits of red wine are plentiful: it has powerful antioxidant properties that are derived from the red pigments in grape skins (members of a family of compounds called proanthocyanidins); it contains tannins that can help reduce the risk of heart attack by hindering the formation of blood clots; and studies have shown that red wine can raise levels of HDL, the protective form of cholesterol.

While I rarely drink red wine myself, I do think it’s beneficial for some people. I recommend organic red wine, and limiting your intake to no more than 1-2 servings per day (if you do not drink alcohol, do not start for health reasons).

Cheese, I do enjoy. While I used to eat cheese sparingly (and with some guilt) because of its fat content and effect on cholesterol levels, research on its health benefits has led me to incorporate more cheese into my diet, as it’s a natural source of calcium and protein. Soft French cheeses tend to be higher in fat, so eat them prudently – healthier options include organic, natural cheeses such as Emmental (Swiss), Jarlsberg and true Parmesan. Just a small amount of cheese offers a big taste, so a piece or two should be satisfactory.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY TARDY VOCABULARY STUDENTS HOLIDAY WEEKEND WORD–stertor STUR-ter, noun:

BIKERNET READER ESCAPED TO VEGAS– I am all settled in Vegas. It is good to be back. I went for a ride today and looked up some old friends.

I stopped at the new Red Rock H-D and saw my old friend Joshua is working in parts. They have some great antiques on display including a Henderson four racer from about 1920. This town is not quite dead yet, in fact it seems to be on the comeback.

I lost a wheel bearing on my old trailer in Williams, Arizona. Met some great people who helped me out. The axle is pretty screwed up but it is 1 inch and I think a couple of those new 1-inch sealed bearings for Harley wheels will fit right on it.

Here are some pics at the new station between Kingman, Arizona and the Dam. The highway is all four lane now and will be all city before long.

That old truck has a brand new 327 with Edlebrock stuff in it. It ran great all the way and got around 16 MPG. My old joints feel better already.
Have a great Thanksgiving,

NEW INFO Regarding DD-214– It’s official; DD-214s are NOW Online.

The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s

online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/
This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.

Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents.

Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records centers mailroom and processing time.

SEDONA TOY RUN ROLLS OVER HARD TIMES–The 27th Annual Toy Run, which rolled through the red rock wonderlands of Sedona, AZ and nearby scenic towns, was a huge success, according to organizer Mark Shoultz of Sedona Motorcycles.

“We raised more than $2,100 for the Northern Arizona Boys & Girls Club and well over 200 brand-new toys were generously contributed,” said Shoultz. “This is what it’s about, that even in hard times motorcyclists and all the local businesses that support our community come out and show what kind of heart they have. On behalf of the boys and girls, we give our thanks.”

Some 150 motorcyclists toured Arizona’s picturesque Verde Valley while many more joined the gift giving spirit at the run’s finish, the Verde Valley Fairgrounds, where food and music were dished up.

WORLD DEBT METER–The following graphic gives a graphic picture of how the various Euro banks have intertwined loans, such that they could fall like dominoes. Click on each country in the outer ring to see the loan paths:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15748696

A very interesting analysis of the European problem

(1) China’ GDP is reducing its domestic output this will flow onto Asian outsourced factors of production

(2) The four Australian Banks need to raise $16.5 billion in next 2 yrs to replace OS wholesale borrowings

It matters little that RBA reduces the cash rate as this is not a berometer of cost of capital-debt for Australian Banks

TAT STRIVES TO RESTORE THAI APPEAL– The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is speeding up its revival campaign with an aim to lure back tourists in December and January.

A strategic recovery plan has been made and the first “We Care Ayutthaya: A Cleaning Day” under the Beautiful Thailand concept will begin Dec 4. The TAT will work hand in hand with the private sector to restore Thailand’s image.

In addition, the TAT will organize familiarity trips in December, January and February, inviting 400 travel agents and media professionals worldwide to visit key destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. So there is hope for our motorcycle media adventure.

The TAT will host a welcome reception party on Dec 13 in Bangkok to show that the capital’s downtown area was not affected by the worst floods in 50 years.

Surapol Svetasreni, the TAT governor, says the tourism situation is stabilizing, with TAT ready to launch campaigns to restore tourist confidence before the high season ends in February.

“The tourism industry should start to rebound after Christmas,” he said. “Short-haul markets in Asia should return faster than long-haul ones. We still have a chance to generate tourism revenues in the second half of the peak season, from early December to the Chinese New Year festival” at the end of January.

Mr. Surapol has assigned all TAT offices worldwide to communicate and promote Thailand among travel agents and media.

The hope is that the campaigns will help meet 2012 targets, which call for international tourist arrivals to rise 9% with revenue of 766 billion baht and domestic tourists arrivals to rise 5% with revenue of 442 billion baht.

Key potential markets to regain after the floods are Asian, South Asia (particularly India), the Middle East, Oceania, some East Asian markets (like Korea) and some European markets (like Russia).

Markets with strong demand _ China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan _ should return after their travel advisories are lifted, while core markets such as Europe (minus Russia) should recover by the end of the first quarter or the next high season in 2012.

“Thailand has to prove it is safe from diseases caused by the floods to assure tourists,” Mr Surapol said.

The floods have also damaged domestic tourism, particularly in flooded areas and Bangkok. In response, the TAT will work with tour operators to offer special package tours to spur local tourist demand.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong tour operators are touting cheap trips to Thailand in a bid to lure tourists back.

The deals are being offered in anticipation of an end to the Hong Kong government’s month-long warning against travel.

They include “buy two, get one free” deals priced at HK$1,600 (6,500 baht or US$205) per person for a five-day package including flights and hotels in Bangkok or Pattaya.

The warning led to cancellation of about 150 tours involving more than 3,000 people from Hong Kong, an important short-haul market for Thailand.

Hong Thai Travel Services and Thai Airways International are offering a “Thailand, Fly Again” promotion to the first 800 people who book tours from Dec 1-15 to Bangkok or Pattaya.

THAT WASN’T BAD–for stale left-overs and sour connections. This week will pick up again big time. We should be able to kick-back during the last month of the year. Originally, when we initiated Bikernet, we said something about taking a month off during the summer for Sturgis and Bonneville, then taking a week or two during the holidays.

No fuckin’ way. Hell, we are committed to two news columns a week. And now we publish more than one article a day. And I’m thinking that I need to step up my project intensity throughout December, and try to finish the Mudflap Girl bikes, plus repair the Salt Shaker. We need these bikes removed from the lifts. We need to think about Bonneville 2012.

Next year will be wild in the streets of Bikernet. We’re trying to prep the exterior of the headquarters for the year, and maybe a coffee shop. We have a Sturgis effort rolling, and two bikes for Bonneville. I have at least two book efforts underway. The XS will be finished, although it looks like Danny has lost interest. I thought he could pull through. We got him a couple of job opportunities, but he let them go. I’m hoping he’s following his medical training, but I’ve lost contact.

Other major changes are coming to Bikernet and our building. I have a notion for the deck on the side of the building which is rapidly unfolding. And Biofuel progress is happening fast. I can’t wait. So hang on.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
