TUNNEL OF FIRE SUNDAY POST FOR APRIL 22, 2012

Hey,

The notorious Sheriff, the Swedish moto- journalist, X-Hamster, now a Weasel, is spending a couple of days at the Bikernet Interplanetary headquarters while roaming the countryside on a new 103 Tour  Glide. He brings interesting insights into our market, the magazine world, web sites, and the social media galaxy.

I love to write, and he loves to search the internet, read facebook, and study every new magazine that pops up. He wants me to quit writing fiction and focus on the history of our industry, the players, the builders and the outlaws. He’s very taken by the Born Free team.

He has contributed to a myriad of magazines all over Europe and the US. Last week he shot a bike at Noise in Santa Ana, while watching the owner lay on a bed of nails–really. Then he quizzed Billy and his team at Spyke, a company with a solid business plan but too many projects. They survived the economic downturn while rebuilding STD from the ground up.

I thought about what he said to me about writing and social media. I’m working on two book efforts, both fiction, and Chance adventures, but one will contain significant social overtones, in an effort to make freedom a critical element once more. Let’s hit the news, then I will lay my 2 cents on the table regarding Bikernet and the industry, plus social media. Hang on.

Calling all Picassos and perverts! The event is limited to 25 models and each one will strip and become a living canvas. Each lady is painted with latex and will be vying for $ cash prizes and adulation from the crowd.

People’s choice voting will determine the top five painted ladies and cash will be awarded to each winning artist. All supplies (women not included) will be provided by the Smoke Out.

“This is an outstanding promotion for any motorcycle shop or company that would like to promote their business,” said Edge, Event Capo. “The amount of viral marketing that will be generated will be off the chain.”

AUSTRALIAN Bikie gang shootings on the rise–
THE days of bikie gangs resolving their differences with a punch-up are gone and shoot-outs are now the norm.

Bikie violence has again erupted on Adelaide’s streets, at the same time that Sydney’s western suburbs have turned into a battlefield. There have been eight shootings in Sydney’s west in just four days and 19 so far this month.

One woman was shot in the face during the recent violence, and in the past five months, stray bullets have peppered schools, tanning salons and nightclubs, and narrowly missed a baby in a cot.

Adelaideans have lived through the fear that Sydneysiders are now experiencing.

In the past two years, bikie gangs have bashed and shot each other in shopping malls, city streets and popular cafes.

At the height of the New Boys-Hells Angels war, shootings became an almost weekly occurrence.

Community groups have demanded an end to the violence, and the right to feel safe within their neighbourhood.

The Federal Government has tried to halt the bloodshed by proposing national uniform anti-bikie laws but Tasmania, Queensland and the ACT have not supported the move.

“As part of this discussion, the Commonwealth offered to consider a single national law if the states referred their powers. However, this was rejected by states and territories,” a spokesman for Federal Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, said.

A key aspect of the legislation would be ensuring mutual recognition of each state’s orders.

“South Australia already has strong anti-bikie laws and our hope is that all states enact strong laws that can effectively combat organized crime,” the spokesman said.

“Maintaining law and order is primarily a state responsibility under the Constitution and the Commonwealth stands ready to help the states where it is appropriate.”

NEW Stor-Bordz TECH COMING TO BIKERNET BAGGERS–This is one of those ideas that make one wonder why no one had thought of it before. Now those of you who ride long distances two-up will especially relate to what I am saying, because in that situation space is at a premium and every nook and cranny needs to be fully utilised.

Especially when travelling two-up where the old lady’s makeup bag alone has filled the Tour-Pak. Well, not only do Convict Custom Cycles (www.convictcustomcycles.com) Stor-Bordz provide some extra space, but also the relatively heavy tools are carried way down low, thus improving the centre of gravity of the loaded bike. This is a big plus.

Harley-Davidson World Ride Starts June 24–
Million Mile Monday Expanding to Two Days.

Milwaukee (April 19, 2012) – The Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), the official riding club of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, is pleased to invite all Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders around the world to join its members in celebrating the freedom of the open road during the 2012 Harley-Davidson World Ride.

Launched in 2008, Million Mile Monday has been an annual event on the last Monday of June that brings thousands of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders together in a collective effort to celebrate the motorcycle riding experience. In 2011, riders collectively logged more that 4,000,000 miles. New for 2012, Million Mile Monday has been expanded into a two-day World Ride on Sunday June 24 and Monday June 25 to give more riders worldwide an opportunity to participate, and with the expansion to two days this year, the company hopes to raise the mileage total even higher.

“H.O.G. is excited to welcome Harley riders around the world to take part in the first-ever Harley-Davidson World Ride,” said Nigel Villiers, Harley-Davidson Director of H.O.G. and Customer Experience International. “On these two days, riders of all nations will band together as one, dedicating ourselves to a shared love of riding motorcycles, and no one will ride alone.”

Whether it’s a ride across town or cross-country, or simply around the block to work, every mile or kilometer counts and can be recorded by logging into Harley-Davidson’s online mileage accumulator at www.h-d.com/worldride , where a rolling odometer will record the collective distance traveled by all participants in the World Ride. At the completion of the ride, a commemorative certificate of participation can be printed to display each rider’s mileage total for the day.

NORTON TO FIELD 2012 ISLE OF MAN CO TT CONTENDER– Norton Motorcycles has announced its intent to compete in the 2012 Isle of Man TT Senior race with a bike powered by an Aprilia RSV V4 engine.

Given that the World Superbike and British Superbike series are limited to production road bikes, Norton has chosen to concentrate on open or formula championships such as MotoGP and TT racing which represent the pinnacle of racing technology and fan interest. It is not currently possible for Norton to compete financially with the three manufacturers that currently set the pace and formula in MotoGP racing, but the TT is the perfect re-entry setting for Norton.

Arguably the world’s most famous motorcycle race, the Isle of Man TT is hard-edged genuine racing where fans are able to be mere inches from the racing action, as racers average over 130mph while attacking the more than 200 bends on the 37.7 mile course.

Ian Mackman, the TT’s reigning privateer champion in 2011 will pilot the new Norton. Competing in the TT since 2007, he’s firmly established himself as not only one of the most consistent riders currently competing on the Mountain Course but also one of the best. Initial testing on the Donington Gran Prix circuit found Ian all smiles and confident about the bike’s potential.

The bike itself features a Spondon chassis, Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes. In cooperation with the Aprilia Factory in Italy, the Norton racer is powered by an RSV V4 engine. The bike is being built and tested solely within the factory at Donington Park Gran Prix Circuit. Here the incremental advancements to chassis and engine can be easily tested just outside the factory doors.

Many parts and systems are developed and produced at Norton’s own inhouse CNC machine facilities, from wheel spindles to throttle bodies. Partnering in the electronics package and fuelling system is Active Technologies Limited. Visually, the factory has captured a raw new Norton racing look, capped by the signature Norton alloy tank.

Approaching the TT challenge, Norton sees it as a three year project, fully aware of the strength and experience of its determined competitors. “We will be genuinely happy to come home with a solid finish this year. Any position would be a bonus,” said Stuart Garner, CEO of Norton Motorcycles U.K. “Over three years we would like to be in a position to be podium competitive, although we understand that it is a huge mountain to climb, and we have our work cut out to achieve this.”

NEW FLORIDA BUDGETS IMPACTS JAILS– The Polk County Sheriff plans to sell boxers and briefs to inmates of the Polk County jail for a small fee. “We’re not going to let them pick the colors. We’ll give them any color they want as long as it’s white,” he joked. Judd said cutting the underwear will save around $45,000 a year, enough to save a job at the jail.

The budget provides that the state will hire private vendors to run the prisons by Jan. 1, 2012. On July 18, 2011, the Florida Police Benevolent Association filed suit against Corrections Secretary Edwin Buss to block a plan to privatize 30 prisons in Miami-Dade, Broward and 16 other counties. Those prisons currently house about 20 percent of Florida’s inmate population, which is approximately 102,000.

In September 2011, Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford ruled that the plan to privatize nearly 30 prison facilities in South Florida violated the Florida Constitution because legislators included the provision in the state budget instead of passing it as a stand-alone law. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in October 2011 that the state would appeal the decision.

The privatization proposal was $25 million over-budget because the Department of Corrections would have to pay comp time, vacation and sick leave to some 4,000 workers in those facilities that would lose their jobs, according to internal email between Department of Corrections officials that suggests lawmakers were warned the privatization push would come at a cost.

BIKERNET 5-BALL RACING WHEELER REPORT–Rockin and Rollin in the gentle-sea-breeze-cooled harbor town just outside of the bustling Long Beach metropolis. Rollin through Southern California and Long Beach is like rollin the dice, ya roll for winners only, no crappin’ out allowed. Keep the dice on the Casinos green felt and in action at all times.

Laughlin River Run

Speaking of Casinos and dice on the green felt. Don’t forget to hit the bank, take lots of money because ya might need to bribe a local official or two while your in town. Pack your bags and haul ass through the desert heat, mixed with hot gusts of wind, destination Laughlin. Gas in Arizona has always been less expensive, which is a good reason to ride to the border, just think of the money you’ll save on a 5-gallon fill up?

5-Ball Racing Team News–Bonne Belle

The 5 Ball Racing Teams 45 Bonne Belle is taking shape right before our very eyes. Last week’s short list include redesigning the front fender, remove the disc brake and caliper, design a shifting mechanism, rear fender modification and more. Seems the Bandit is relentless when he’s on a mission, which is most of the time.

From the minute the wake up call comes in at first light seven days a week, until the wee hours of the morning the wheels at Bikernet are spinning like a Tasmanian devil out of control, albeit furiously and in a multitude of ever changing directions. We’re burnin daylight, more ink for the readership, more top notch features, and hire more girls with the skimpiest wardrobe, they make great models. It’s a helluva life we’re livin’ in Bikernet paradise, hop-on, hang-on and enjoy the ride.

124-inch Raycer

We are officially on the frame table in Salem, Oregon, possibly fulltime until completion. Late Thursday afternoon the UPS man delivered a Series 66 Aerocharger mock-up units for placement and fitment. We discussed tucking the frame rails in a bit to allow for added turbo and inner-cooler mounting area.

Here at Bikernet headquarters our fingers are crossed and burnt offerings are burned, and offered on a daily basis. Hell, just last week we threw a pile of chicken bones in the middle of the shop floor for analysis by the local witch doctor in the hope of discovering the true meaning of life. Before the reading was completed, the bones were lining up perfectly and here come the trusty, always-hungry guard dogs. They ate every morsel of evidence and all aerodynamic mantra hope for the day was lost.

It’s a new week on the horizon with new hope for the future and completed projects. Time is on our side as long as the clock keeps tickin’, keeps tickin’…………….

96-inch twin cam

We’re gettin closer by the day. We expect a positive report and images mid week. In the meantime we will publish the bottom end build tech this coming week on Bikernet.

NISSAN AD CATCHES HEAT–As the President and Chairman of a motorcycling organization representing 275,000 motorcyclists I find it appalling that you would attempt to sell your product by promoting the serious injury and the death of motorcyclists by way of running us down and striking us with your product. This campaign is ill advised and I ask that you cease this practice immediately. You can be certain that this has been brought to the attention of several Federal Agencies with whom we partner to promote motorcycle safety and prevent exactly the thing you portray in your advertisement, this is completely irresponsible and you should be ashamed.

“In God We Trust”

TUNNEL OF FIRE WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT AT THE BUFFALO CHIP–
How crazy do you have to be to ride your motorcycle through 230 feet of burning tunnel, at 2900 degrees, that could collapse at any second? Well “not so crazy as hopefully talented … but a little on the crazy side,” says motorcycle daredevil Toby Baker.

Yep, stuntman Toby Baker will attempt to set the Guinness Book World Record for riding through a tunnel of fire at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

TOTAL SEAL RINGS FOR THE BONNE BELLE–I think your best bet on the rings is Total Seal. Their catalog lists one set that may work but I think you need to call the Tech line and get their input. Here is the number. 623-587-7400

I am compiling a “gear chart” for you to add to your log book on the K-Magnum and will send it off to you first of the week. I’m thinking 22-51 for transmission and wheel, but you could shoot for 23-46 and at 5000 rpms that puppy would be flying down the salt at over 170 mph, if it can pull it.

ARE YOU AWAKE YET– Yes? No? Did you check out Bikernet Baggers and see the latest- EPISODE 5 of the Midnight Rider series?…When we last heard from the Midnight Rider his bike’s electrical system gave out; the middle of the night, no lights, drafting a big rig, and his encounter with Big Rick…

Midnight Rider: End Of The Line
Freeways may have the same numeric designation and stretch for thousands of miles but are changelings at night. Becoming glowing shapeshifters of reflective signs, Botts dots, and drunk bumps. White and yellow lines of high-tech micro-crystalline reflective paint disappear into the vanishing point. Some parts of the freeway light up with the latest technology while
others literally disappear in disrepair. Massive freeway signs pop from the gloom like glowing Tarot cards foretelling a foreboding future.

BIKERNET TRIKES–
Did you check out the history piece on Frank Pedersen of Frankenstein Trikes? Garry Stuart recounts a chance meeting with Frank and Steinar (FRANKenSTEIN) in Spearfish, South Dakota and the 2,000-mile Trike proving ground test that ensued.

The Outlaw Trail was no match for Frank’s Shovelhead powered, hardtail Trike. Check out that amazing rear end- ahhh- beautiful. This thing was made for riding hard- those wheels look amazing like that.

If you get a chance go over to Bikernet Trikes (bikernettrikes.com) for Gary’s story and some interesting background on Frank’s Scandinavian background. As if the Trike wasn’t cool enough- the man and the story behind these creations is just as interesting.

ADP LIGHTSPEED REPORTS HEALTHY 2012 POWERSPORTS START–
The Data Services Group at ADP Lightspeed is reporting for the first part of 2012, U.S. powersports dealers have seen a major increase in revenue compared to the same period in 2011. The climb continues a pattern that began in October 2011.

The company says that factors contributing to this increase included warmer-than-average temperatures and an improvement in the economy. In taking advantage of this confluence of positive conditions, dealers have grown sales in parts, service and sales departments, with ADP reporting that sales in March 2012 increased 20 percent over March 2011.

ADP Lightspeed also reports that in March, parts, service and sales departments in all five regions of the country were positive over the same time last year. The greatest gains, the company reports, were in Midwest sales departments, where revenue was up 39.5 percent over 2011. The smallest gain was found in the parts departments of the Southern region where sales increased 4.2 percent over last year.

The Data Services Group at ADP Lightspeed has reported powersports same store sales since May of 2006, and currently maintains a database of over 1 billion sales records for the motorcycle industry. LET’S RIDE–So, I’ve stressed of late, over a myriad of issues. When stress happens, it fucks with your mental peripheral vision, and the ability to stay open of opportunities and alternatives. I fought it, and the Sheriff helped. Once in a while I need someone from the outside to point out all the good aspects of life, or he wanted another bowl of Sin Wu’s magnificent chili. It’s like breaking a spell.

I understand stress, just look at our government. They want to regulate us everyday and they can’t control themselves. Okay, enough about stress. My mantra during this period was to try to stay as focused as many immediate goals as possible. As long as you are accomplishing items on the checklist, it can’t be all bad. We’ve made tremendous progress on the Bonne Belle, on our Bonneville department, and we are moving ahead on Trikes and Baggers. Two bike features are headed your way next week, and a couple more Bonneville techs.

You can’t imaging how pumped Ray C. Wheeler is about the 5-Ball Raycer. He is around 67 years old, and a major dream is coming true right before his eyes. We may end up in the 200 mph club this year. And we will send a hearty thanks to all our new 2012 sponsors next week. The list is growing and we appreciate it.  We couldn’t make progress without them.

Regarding social media and motorcycle fads. We expanded Bikernet this year for several reasons. It’s been a tough project, but I believe it will help the industry, and a lot of moto-journalistic talents, which we will share with our readership moving forward. So what about fads? They are cool, but we can’t change our focus. We will stay true to our Bikernet Code of the West moving forward, and enjoy the young guns’ bike building twists and turns, as they surface. We hope everyone working hard in this industry, can make a living and enjoy the ride.

Have a helluva week.

Rider Forever,

–Bandit
