TWIST AND TURNS THURSDAY NEWS FOR April 10, 2014

Hey,

This news column is incredible. I’m not sure which direction to go in, negative or positive? I always desire to set sail in a positive direction, and no matter what keep heading in that direction. It’s the code of the west. I had a funny conversation with Tom Seymour, and his partner Dave from Saddlemen.

Tom told me a great story about I believe Kenny Roberts and a Yamaha Race team. They fought a terrible, team-wide high-speed wobble issue. Kenny got so frustrated he decide to quit racing, but in the final couple of laps of the race he started to ask himself, “So what will I do if I quit?”

The thought terrified him, so he twisted the wick, came out of the wobble and won the race. It’s a lesson in never giving up. Especially for business owners. We are faced with fighting for every aspect of our businesses, whatever they are, from emptying the trash to creating new products. And there are usually hundreds of folks who rely on our biz business being around tomorrow. You can’t ever give up.

Let’s hit the news.

INDUSTRY NEW FLASH—BMW bought Harley-Davidson. Okay, so I get this text message. I’m driving down a busy street and almost collide with the most convenient wall. I yank the official 5-Ball Racing, Bikernet van to the side of the road and make the call to an established Bikernet editor, who confirms the rumor. I can’t believe it.

As it turns out my skepticism is justified. It’s all April fools bullshit. –Bandit

Bandit,

Good luck with the VA, if there is one close by you might want to check with a Veterans advocate group first as they can sometimes make things smoother if you are not already in the system. Don’t be in a hurry, it only took me 2 years to get diagnosed with severe chronic PTSD

NEW FEATURE HEADED TOWARD AMERICAN IRON—My high school partner Larry St. Marie discovered this Sporty recently being built by Andrew, a car guy, who trained under Gene Winfield. I hooked Markus up with the job to shoot this fine classic custom.

“You got the job!!” Markus said recently. “Your economic future is secured! Chis M. the editor of American Iron, has agreed to my strong arm tactics! Congrats, M.C. [ don’t say I never did anything for ya!] You get to write the story.

DIDN’T I TELL YOU LIFE IS NUTS—
Politicians in Australia are attempting to make club membership and very serious crime.
The other side of the situation . . .

Corrupt Cops more dangerous than bikers? Definitely!

In the southern Australian state of Victoria there are 437 serving police officers with criminal convictions, that is one in every 40 officers.

It is an incredible increase of 230 per cent over the past five years. Among the ranks is an inspector convicted of assaulting an off-duty officer and drunk-driving while other offences include bashing, drunk-driving, fraud, illegal use of guns and other driving offences.

The Daily Telegraph has said that the 437 officers have 591 convictions against them. That is 256 per cent more than 2008 when, according to freedom of information figures, there were 166 offences between 133 serving officers.

Among them are 14 inspectors, five senior sergeants, 80 sergeants, 236 senior constables, 20 probationary constables and 13 student officers. Policing expert Michael Kennedy said the reason for the increase was probably due to Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione taking a tough line and a culture of police reporting and prosecuting their own.

“On face value these figures appear to be negative for the police but on the other side, Scipione does not interfere,” Dr Kennedy said. Dr Kennedy, a former detective and lecturer in policing at the University of Western Sydney, said some police chiefs in parts of Australia had been known for “having a word” with officers facing the criminal courts so they could resign quietly.

“But Scipione does not do that. If they are charged, he lets the system deal with them,” he said. Former assistant commissioner Clive Small said: “An increase of over 200 per cent over five years is a worrying trend that the police and the government need to keep an eye on.”

In cases still in the courts, a female officer has been charged with stalking, intimidating and bugging, a male officer has been accused of setting up a bathroom spy camera to secretly film people and theft, lying and corruption. “If an officer’s offence causes me to lose my confidence in them, I will sack them.

They will not be part of this police force,” he said. However he said less serious offences should not warrant the end of a career but often the workplace penalties were worse than court penalties with officers demoted.

“Yes, there are officers still in this organization who we have charged and who have recorded a conviction,” Mr Scipione said. “In the majority of cases, these officers will have been convicted of a low range PCA or similar offence.

While I am not happy about that, I don’t believe that warrants the end of a … career.” Since he took over as commissioner in 2007, Mr Scipione has sacked 87 officers under section 181D of the Police Act, which states the commissioner has lost confidence in them.

Those are officers who have not been reinstated by the Industrial Relations Commission. Senior police are known to be frustrated with the IRC which has forced them to reinstate an estimated half of all sacked officers after appeals.

The IRC has made it clear in their decisions that even a high-range PCA or similar offence could never be grounds for dismissal. Former sergeant Andrew Lawrance, who the commissioner tried to sack in 2010 because he used his penis piercing to open beer bottles, was reinstated by the IRC. Mr Scipione was warned about criticising the commission in 2009 by Justice Frank Marks, who considered contempt of court proceedings against the commissioner.

SADDLEMEN’S CRUIS’N DELUXE SADDLEBAG GUARD BAG SET–
When your luggage is packed to the gills and you need a touch more cargo room, Saddlemen’s Saddlebag Guard Bag sets are a great solution. The Cruis’n Deluxe styling works well with just about any bagger and almost makes you forget how handy these bags are when it comes to taking on board extra stuff.

Because these bags are mounted when you can get at them in seconds, that means you can get at that gear stowed inside just as fast thanks to the quick-turn lid hasp. And if you and your passenger need to carry extra fluids for the day’s run, the expandable beverage holsters on the side of each bag are ready to hold a variety of containers.

Rugged SaddleHyde beats back the elements, as does coated hardware and snaps. Special buffer pads make sure your bags stay in place on the guards as nobody wants saggy gear hanging on their bike. Snap on a set and you’ll quickly discover you can never live without them again.

•Rugged storage bags bring style and convenience to any Harley-DavidsonTM bagger running FLH-style saddlebag guards (RUSHMORE application available in Spring 2014)
•Leather-grained UV and weather-resistant 3mm thick SaddleHyde bags have spacious inner compartments and fold-away mesh beverage holders.
•Rigid construction bags hold their shape even when empty, quarter turn flap releases accept mini-padlocks so you secure your belongings in the bags.
•Your personal cargo stays clean and dry as each compartment’s zippered opening is further protected by weather-stopping flaps.
•Mounting is a snap! No tools required as each bag snaps tight to saddlebag guards with non-slip pads.

Saddlebag Guard Bag sets start at $61.95 MSRP

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–Subject: A retiree’s trip to Walmart

Yesterday I was at my local Walmart grocery

buying a large bag of Purina Dog Chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog, and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think…I had an elephant?

So because I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Walmart’s won’t let me shop there anymore.

SPEAKING OF THE EVIL WALMART EMPIRE—Here’s a quote from the boss:

“There’s only one boss; the customer. He can fire everybody from the chairman on down simply by spending his money elsewhere.”–Sam Walton

I refuse to shop at Walmart. I’ll drive five miles out of my way to give a local shop the business. Think about it. Walmart, K-Mart and Home Depot are wiping out small shops in America. There must be a way.—Bandit

WHAT IS DIVE BARTENDER?-DiveBartender.com is the first cross country Dive Bar review and ranking site. The white lightening crew focus on regional differences.

“We are going to take you across our vast and beautiful country side to all those gritty, uncharted watering holes of America that go unfrequented by the dressy weekender crowd who are just looking to dance and get laid,” said the editor. “We will take you to those dark and wonderful places for the rest of us, the poor, the thirsty and huddled masses.”

After traveling extensively you’ll find that bar etiquette, basic drink recipes, lingo, grub, roadside attractions and after hours events are different everywhere. There is a certain history and science that goes into every local scene that is deep rooted to every run down bar you ever step foot into. This is what you will discover in the content of Dive Bartender and so much more!

CHOPPER SHOP OF THE WEEK FROM THE DIVE BARTENDER–McQuistons Chopper Designs. McQuistons Chopper Designs
2033 W Gaylord St.
Long Beach, CA 90813

McQuistons Chopper Designs is home for wayward mechanics; everyone here is making ends meet and saving their sanity through the zen of being a motorcycle mechanic. Motorcycles are what these guys and gals trust in, and they are known for pumping out some of the best custom paint jobs and custom cycles in So Cal. ?
These guys have the hunger to be the best, break world records, and push their award winning bikes in iron competitions all over the LA area. With the influence of 50-year plus experienced motorcycle mechanic who previously worked on bikes for some of the greats such as Evel Knievel, Gary “Rocket Man”,Randy Smith, Joe Smith, Sonny Raslowski, Dean Moon, Tom Burke, and “Nez” Nezbitt just to name a few; and is known for producing some of the worlds most high speed and high performance Harleys, Pat Leahy.

The exquisite paint jobs and welding experience of shop owner Ryan McQuiston and help of several drifter shop hands, they produce custom bike builds like a ‘69 Honda Easy Rider look a like dusted in purple flake to a copper plated, Pan Shovel, to a motorcycle for the handicapped with complete custom hand controls, foot stirrups, and wheelchair holding sidecar.

They can fix and work on anything from Harley to Honda. The shop is located at 2033 Gaylord St., tucked back in the industrial complex on the west side of Long Beach, which is mainly inhabited by pedal to the metal truckers and now growing into the hidden place to go for motorcycle and hot rod garages. This is coincidentally not too far from the original High Gear Machine Shop that Pat Leahy manned for years and West Coast Choppers old garage.

This isn’t a “who’s dick is bigger” type of shop. There is zero attitude. You can bring in your Honda or your Harley, they chop it and take pride in every cut and weld. They appreciate you there. You can hang out and have a beer or any of the other wonderful things that are legal in Long Beach. You can kick back and talk about bikes or music or just about anything. They welcome you and treat you like their own from the get go.

In conclusion, if you get a chance to roll through Long Beach, McQuistons Chopper Designs is a must go place. Anything from bolting on a fresh set of pipes to full custom chops and everything in between is on the menu here. They’ll welcome you with open arms and help any way they can.

CUSTOM FLASKS FROM HOWARD KNIGHT LEATHER–Each flask is covered in the customer’s choice of leather, from a huge variety of colors and textures of cowhide to exotics like stingray and elephant. My specialty is hand tooled leather in a classic floral style; incorporating logos and other objects like skulls and eagles is an option also. Custom is what I’m all about, if you can imagine it, I can probably create that design on leather.

Once the piece has been cut out to fit the flask, I tool the design and finish the pattern with dye and a sealer. Whether I’m using tooled cowhide or a nice piece of stingray, each piece is hand sewn onto the flask. This is not done on all flasks you see, this technique gives the leather a completely smooth and finished appearance front and back. Attention to detail is foremost in every item I make.

I offer two different sizes of flasks, a 4 ounce and 7 ounce in stainless steel. A 4 ounce flask with a nice leather wrap sells for $50, a 4 ounce tooled flask sells for $110 and a stingray or other exotic covered flask sells for $90.

A 7-ounce flask with a leather wrap sells for $65, a tooled 7 ounce flask sells for $125 and a 7 ounce flask with stingray or other exotic leather is $100.

I welcome special commissions, club logos and corporate logos. I can be reached by email at howard.knight@montana.com and please check out my website at www.howardknightleather.com . I will be putting up photos of my flasks and new leather covered cigar tubes in the next week.

UNCLE MONKEY DISCUSSES THE DETAILS– Sometimes we over think things. We lose the big picture trying to fill in all the little details missing what is right before us. I was recently talking with someone who was looking to build a simple bobber project. His requirements were sorta broad – air cooled V-twin with a chain.

He had no brand loyalty and it would seem that a Harley, though the best choice, was out of his budget. As he tried to find the perfect project he was missing that any bike would really suit his project. It was a matter of hitting his local ads to find a running bike that met his basic starting requirements. But as our exchange went on he couldn’t see the forest through the trees. What bike should he buy, what bikes were air cool V-twins with chains?

I don’t really blame him for not getting the idea because we are all guilty of it from time to time. I want to build a rat rod, some cool beater vehicle to bag around in when I want a change from my bikes. Really as long as it runs and stops it would be cool. But being financially strapped and wanting to have all the cool tools I figured I could sell a couple of old vehicles I’m storing out on the farm. You know – ratty old vehicles that would make cool rat rods for beating on for some one.

We get swept away in new ideas, new projects. It is a guilty distraction obscuring what really was our goal, our focus. We all have those rough diamonds in our garages and in our lives. Things we have neglected or are overlooking that are waiting for us to breathe new life into them, to revisit those once new ideas that inspired us to acquire them in the first place.

My advice this week is to take stock of what is around you. Maybe sell off a couple rough diamonds to cut another. Maybe turn that old dirt bike into a cafe racer, maybe combine the good parts of several into a Frankenstein mish-mash that will inspire, that may start the newest trend of what is cool.

THE WOMENS RIDERS NOW CORNER– Riding season is here–or nearly here–for almost all of the country! That means we have so many great stories and reviews to share with you.

I want to thank two new fun companies for coming on board with WRN as supporters. Raci Babi (long “a”) makes the ultimate protection from helmet hair. I reviewed the Diva-Do helmet liner and found it’s the only solution for my long hair. Check out Raci-Babi.com to learn more.

And talk about finding a solution to a unique problem for some women. Fashion 4 Your Bra Straps solves the issue of exposed bra straps by making them stylish and blingy. I’m getting a pair and will let you know how I like them. Learn more here.

Lastly, I want to make sure you all know that International Female Ride Day falls on Saturday, May 3, this year, not the first Friday in May like it has for the last six years. We’ll have more details on WRN in the coming weeks.

Smiles and Blessings!

The past week has been very productive in our quest for speed this summer at the 11th Annual BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials held on the Bonneville Salt Flats. With a few days better than four months remaining we keep whittling away at the to-do list.

The intercooler was recalculated for the long run, 1/4 fairing in process for street duty. We knocked a project out and seemed to find another one needing a little final finessing for the optimum opportunity at maximum output. Preparation and planning with the option to change when necessary, safe and straight is the goal…..at warp speed.

Just when it appeared that we had a well thought intercooler, just for shits and grins we enlisted the Pros at www.Twinsturbo.com to analyze our expected air flow in relation to the intercooler we had mounted on the front legs.

The Twins diligently crunched the numbers, more than once….124 cu inches, 62mm Horse Power Inc. Throttle Body, R&R Cycle Stage 4 Heads flowing 292 cfm….Aero Charger Series 66 Variable Vane Turbo with an S&S Cycle .640 Gear Drive Cam Set monitoring the air. The .640 cams may be the only part we salvaged from the 124-inch test bed engine that rolled over 135,000.

The new intercooler will mount under the tail section. We increased tubing size exiting the Turbo, from a 2 to 2 ¼ -inch…More air available for the long run.

We are running a proven combination that has been upgraded with top shelf S&S Cycle Cases, S&S Cycle Lower end and cylinders, TP Turbo Pistons, Dan Thayer 3 Stage Oil Pump, R&R Cycle Stage 4 Cylinder Heads, S&S Cycle Roller Rockers. Top to bottom, inside out, fresh with the exception of the cam set.

Randy Torgeson at Hyperformance in Pleasanton, Iowa machined a plate to mount the oil lines in place of the usual oil filter mount. Safety wiring is mandatory in some areas, we safety wire when practical as well.

We have custom mounted an oil cooler with 2 fans (might help, can’t hurt?), on the primary side for the extra oil and the cooling potential offered. At 90 mph who’s gonna notice? At 200 mph for at least one mile, the extra oil and the oversized intercooler will come into play during the most important timed mile.

We expect the newest intercooler to arrive momentarily at Twin Turbos in Long Beach. Mounts and tubing will be fabricated, then we prep the Raycer for a road trip to Dan Thayers in New York. .

Stay Tuned.

FROM THE ZIPPER’S HISTORY BOOKS–This Albertin film was recently posted that I would like to share with my m/c friends.

Jimmy was a bit of a personal mentor to me in my brief dirt track years. Dave and I visited him in Augusta and we practiced on his local test track and met Vic at Augusta H-D. He was at Dorsey Speedway one night as he watched -coached me during a feature win years ago.

He is the Tom T Hall of motorcycle story tellers with his pink leathers, yet seems like he could back it up with a lot of wins at many regional races on his XR 750. Jimmy raced with many great competitors that I remember like Greg Edmonds, Mike Sponseller, Johnny Goad and Eddie Adkins

Enjoy- share this little piece of history of a South East rider from Georgia

READER FLASH, New Bikernet Reader Comment!–Bikernet Independent Motorcycle Noise Study

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=8242

Because I attended graduate school your reference to the bikernet survey and/or study of motorcycles cannot possibly be taken seriously because you are prejudiced.

You need to have an independent source such as a university, etc. that is not supportive of motorcycles or anti-noise movements to draw a study that is unprejudiced. And, if anyone falls for such skewed data they do not understand how double blind studies are done.

It is like the pharmaceutical companies being allowed to conduct a study regarding one of their medications being found to cause cancer in humans. Who would believe them?

It’s ridiculous! And, by the way, I drive a car and not a motorcycle but I address the distracted drivers talking on cell phones all the time! They are also a nuisance and a danger on the road.

Our study was never meant to be taken seriously, but the contention is (loud pipes save lives). Yes, we would love to have this test followed up by a University.–Bandit

FOLLOW-UP New Bikernet Reader Comment!– Bikernet Independent Motorcycle Noise Study

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=8242

I’d like to see that the study that claims loud pipe saves lives. The National Transportation Association study contradicts it and so do the insurance companies that insure motorcycles. There is no proof that loud pipes saves lives.

Most motorcycle accidents occur because motorcycles run into other vehicles and this is according to the National Transportation Association statistics. It appears that motorcycle riders are the ones who are distracted.

So, I guess there are a lot of people not hearing those so-called loud pipes that save lives! Ride your bikes and enjoy them but don’t have them so obnoxiously loud that you rob others of their hearing and quality of life. And, there is no excuse for a distracted car driver to run into anyone in a car or on a motorcycle.

If you are referring to the NY incident the people in the SUV were terrified. Wouldn’t you be if you were in the middle of a mob that went wild?

Furthermore, if you are so interested in not losing rights for a sport you love so much, than isn’t in your best interest not to encourage these illegal bike owners? Also, the World Health Organization states that it takes only 9 seconds at 120 decibels to permanently kill some of the little hairs inside our ears that help us hear. And, modern medicine has no way currently to repair them.

So, isn’t following the laws, an being courteous to one another, to save even the hearing of one, innocent little child, worth it? C’mon!

And, the University of Gainesville, FL did the first quantifiable scientific study in 2009 and randomly took bikes that were embarking upon one of the rides. They found that almost half had illegal exhausts on them exceeding 110 or higher and some were as high as 140 decibels. It wasn’t so bad when there was only one or two here or there doing this to their exhausts but now you have almost half or more doing this to their bikes and it is becoming unbearable to the public.

I need a better term for my reaction to his response. In most cases I want to say, “Jesus.” But he has nothing to do with this. I could say, “Fuck,” but I’m trying to clean up the news. So what the hell?

I hear more and more about this noise issue, as if bikers are the only source of noise on the planet. You NEVER went into the service and trained with loud guns, or got shipped to the lines and use them defending freedom? You have never been a teenager and cranked up the music in your bedroom until it rattled the walls. You never attended a concert and stood by the speakers? What the fuck? You’ve never worked around noisy equipment or trucks?

This guy loves to quote government agencies. They are all skewed toward enhancing regulation. I was stationed on a ship that fired 85,000 rounds at children in Vietnam jungles, and my hearing is normal for my age. So should we outlaw sirens, train horns, ship horns, anything that would alert folks?

And I believe distracted drivers account for 50 percent of all accidents, and something like 75 percent of all motorcycle/car accidents are caused
by motorists turning in front of bikers or running them off the road. So what about “Loud Pipes Save Lives” doesn’t make sense?

All the best,

–Bandit

ONCE MORE, New Bikernet Reader Comment!– The Endless Highway – Part One

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=11637

I can vouch for this man. He is part of my family and has been for about 40 years. He is a true drifter, one of the true bikers I know.

The one thing I can say for Panhead is that he is a true American and very loyal to his friends. When he tells a story, you can count on it being the truth. I used to consider him my uncle when I was a kid.

Now he is my brother. I am proud to call him family. HE IS AS SOLID AS THEY COME . Love ya brother.

TEMECULA, NO ARRESTS IN BLOODY BRAWL ON 1-15 — Two Hells Angels were stabbed but won’t talk and witnesses say Mongols were involved.

BY SARAH BURGE
STAFF WRITER

Two weeks after a bloody brawl among motorcycle riders on the freeway near Temecula left two Hells Angels with stab wounds, no arrests have been made and investigators say the stabbing victims aren’t talking.

The fight blocked northbound traffic on Interstate 15 near the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint about 6 p.m. March 22, and reportedly involved dozens of bikers described by witnesses as Mongols and Hells Angels armed with weapons such as bats and shovels.

By the time officers arrived, the bikers were gone but they found a bloody fight scene and a discarded knife, a Riverside County sheriff’s investigator wrote in search warrant documents. Officers drove north to the Temecula Parkway off-ramp, where they found two motorcyclists.

One of them was wearing Hells Angels clothing and was covered in blood, court records say.

While officers were trying to detain the bikers, a man in an SUV pulled up and identified himself as a Hells Angels chapter president and a friend of the two motorcyclists, Investigator Carlos Topete wrote in court papers. The man collected the injured biker’s bloody Hells Angels vest and some other items, putting them in his SUV, Topete wrote.

The injured rider was taken to a hospital for treatment of eight stab wounds.

While officers were investigating, they learned that another Hells Angel with stab wounds had been taken to Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta. The person who dropped him off was driving a truck with Arizona plates and hauling a utility trailer.

The man, who claimed to be the chapter president, later told investigators that the truck belongs to the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and is used to transport Hells Angels merchandise.

Sheriff’s investigators confiscated the Hells Angels vehicles for evidence.

Sgt. Kevin McDonald said investigators believe the purported chapter president misrepresented his position with the group and that he is merely an associate.

The victims, both admitted Hells Angels members, have been released from the hospital and have refused to say who is responsible for their injuries, McDonald said.

According to a witness, the conflict between the motorcycle clubs appeared to have started farther south on Interstate 15 in San Diego County.

The witness, a Temecula resident who asked that his name be withheld out of fear for his safety, said he entered the freeway at Highway 76 and noticed a few bikers who appeared to be chasing two Mongols on motorcycles. The Mongols were outnumbered at first, he said, but as they passed Rainbow Valley Boulevard, they were joined by a large group that had been parked off the freeway.

As they passed the checkpoint, dozens of bikers in Mongols clothing surrounded the other bikers, blocking the lanes of traffic. The witness said the men in Mongols Motorcycle Club gear kicked the other men off their bikes. The men pulled out weapons — he saw a hammer, a screwdriver and a crowbar — and began brawling, moving toward the freeway shoulder as they fought, the witness said.

At one point, a pickup hauling a trailer pulled up. The men in the trailer appeared to be holding handguns, he said.

The witness said he called 911 but didn’t stick around long enough to see the stabbings.

“My wife was scared,” he said. “She just wanted us to get out of there. They were still fighting when we left.”

The witness said he couldn’t believe they were openly brawling on the freeway in broad daylight.

Capt. Jeff Kubel, who serves as Temecula police chief and commander of the sheriff’s Southwest Station, said there’s no reason to expect further violence from outlaw motorcycle clubs in the Temecula area. Though it’s still unclear what happened, all indications are that the motorcyclists involved were on their way home from events in San Diego County, he said.

Albert Perez, an attorney who represents the Mongols Motorcycle Club, declined to comment Monday.

Efforts to reach a representative of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club were unsuccessful.
