America Takes Back World Record: DareDevil Wednesday Aug 7 – Daily Drag Races: Aug 2 – 10
“Where There’s a Wheel, There’s a Way”
Many crazy things have come from a night of drinking, but one of the crazier ones, by far, is the UniMotorcycle drag races that will be at the Chip in 2013 during the Sturgis rally. Magnets for attention, Unimotorcycles have only one wheel with no brakes and no steering. Crazy right?! It’s a sight you have to see this Sturgis rally as America’s one wheeled drag racers take back the world record title from Russia! World Record attempts occur Wednesday Aug 7 at 5 PM at the FREE PUBLIC ACCESS CrossRoads at the Buffalo Chip®. It will be one of the most unique adrenaline filled and memorable experiences of the Sturgis Rally and your life.
In addition to the world record attempt on Wednesday, these crazy machines will be in action every day from August 2 through Aug 10 drag racing at the CrossRoads at the Buffalo Chip. Get your blood flowing and heart racing and come check out these incredible machines.
William “Sidecar Willy” Nassau came up with the idea of Unimotorcycle racing during a night of drinking with his buddy Bubba. After expressing that he had raced everything on two wheels, three wheels and four wheels, he voiced concern that he needed a new challenge and jokingly the unimotorcycle was drawn on a beer coaster. After laughing about the idea, Sidecar Willy took the coaster home and the next day started rummaging around his used motorcycle parts. After multiple failed test runs and one painful bruised face later, Sidecar Willy came up with a design.
The Unimotorcycle Drag Racing was debuted outside a bar in Daytona Beach during Bike Week 1991 when co-founder Bob Sheskie rode the first unimotorcycle, designed by unimotorcycle founder William “Sidecar Willy” Nassau, and completed the first successful 100 foot run. Sidecar Willy hoped to encourage creativity, ingenuity, and mechanical skill by creating the sport that tested the rider’s ability to ride a one-wheeled motorcycle for 100 feet, with no brakes and no steering. For those reasons, motorcycles must contain a power plant that has to be at least five years old and stock for its intended use in order to attempt the world record stunt.
Currently 17 nations compete in Unimotorcycle Drag Racing, which grew to include Poland, France and India this past year. The current world record stunt in Unimotorcycle Drag Racing is held by Roman Koltakov of the Russian Unimotorcyclists Societ, a record earned at the Russian European Ice World Championships held in Togliatti, Russia. Now’s America’s chance to take back the world record title!
