Hey,
It’s almost Veterans Day and I plan to take advantage of the USS IOWA tour on Saturday, since I did three Vietnam tours on the St. Paul, a heavy cruiser. A very similar ship. I’m sure it will bring back memories of 5-inch shells kicking out onto the wooden decks as we bombarded the coast.
Buster, the Saddlemen brother who bought the amazing shrunken FXR, called the other day in a panic. Something went wrong with the bike and tore up the BDL primary belt. He brought it over to the Headquarters in the back of his truck. We unloaded this little puppy and began to operate. Amazing, one of the inner primary bolts dropped out and jammed under the belt. Actually, once we pulled the bolt free he could have ridden it home and for years to come.
This was a sharp wake-up call for all of us who build custom bikes. When we clean our choppers, we need to check for loose nuts and bolts. This problem could have been sorta easily prevented. It also pointed a finger at mid controls. I was a fan of mid controls for years, but they can be a mechanical pain in the ass and prevent access to primary systems readily, ah but they’re cool and clean up the front of the frame.
It was a lot of work, but I installed mid-controls on my son’s Mudflap girl FXR, then he changed his mind. From a mechanical standpoint, it was a major relief to remove them and open up the entire driveline to easy access on both sides.
Reminds me. I need to ride Frank’s bike around the block. Erik Lundmark is headed to the headquarters on Sunday to shoot my son riding his Mudflap girl for the first time, then tattoo a redhead on a shop lift. Should be interesting.

IMS ULTIMATE BUILDER SHOWS BY BIKERS CHOICE–The 2012 Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show kicked off in Atlanta, GA on November 2-4, 2012 with builders coming in from as far as Chicago and Dallas. And it was worth the trip for these metal artisans as they garnered four out of six top awards.
FREESTYLE
Kyle Shorey of Shadetree Fabrications took the win in the FreeStyle class at the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Atlanta with Speedmetal. The bike doubled up on trophies as it also took IronWork’s Magazine Editor’s Choice award and will be featured in the magazine in an upcoming issue. The bike began life as a customer’s Saxon Crown chopper. The wheels, engine, brakes and tranny were salvaged from the donor bike. A key feature of the bike is the prototype springer, which will be available to the public shortly.

We have learned some simple things… HOT pizzas are the number one best perishable food donation, and work gloves, garbage bags and STURDY Rubbermaid tubs are the most sought after items this week. HOT coffee and Hot Chocolate too.

TEN WAYS TO PREVENT AND TREAT THE FLU– With flu season here, prevention is your best defense against the fever, body aches and cough that the virus can bring on. Use the slides in this photo album to learn about ways to prevent the flu, as well as some natural treatments if you do catch the flu.
Wash your HandsWash your hands, especially when you’re out in public places, with hot water and soap. When you travel, it’s a good idea to carry alcohol towelettes with you.
Get a flu shotGet a flu shot. This is especially important for those over 65 years old, as well as anyone with a weakened immune or respiratory system, nursing home residents, and health care workers who have regular contact with patients. Pregnant women whose last two trimesters fall during flu season (generally November to April) might consider getting the shot as well. Since the vaccine now protects against H1N1, most people should consider getting vaccinated.
Wear a mask in contaminated areas. Avoid contact with people who have respiratory illnesses. Airborne droplets from sneezes and coughs are what spread the influenza virus from person to person.
Don’t touch your face or eyes. Minimize the spread of germs by avoiding touching your hands to your face or your eyes.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after using it, and wash your hands.
Treatment: Go to (or call) your physician. He or she can prescribe medication if the problem is indeed the flu. It is important to start taking this within the first 48 hours of symptoms – its effectiveness declines as the illness builds.
Treatment: Try elderberry extract. This can help to lessen the symptoms and speed up recovery.
Treatment: Eat garlic. Raw garlic is best – try at least two cloves per day, chopped up in a sandwich or in soup.
Treatment: Get rest. Lack of sleep and too much stress can make the body weak – if you get the flu, rest as much as possible while your symptoms are resolving.
Treatment: Drink fluids. Staying hydrated helps to eliminate toxins and metabolic wastes from your body.

Just a few thoughts on True duals on geezer glides. I ran stock Harley (crack an’ leak) headpipes on my glide for 7 years. I put Bassani muffs on it, ran okay, as long as my welder was used yearly to fix the cracks. I bought a set of Cobra true dual headpipes, put ‘em on with the old muffs. I’ve been wrenchin’ for over 30 years on these chug-a-bugs, and I have to admit, my bike runs better, gets better fuel mileage, and I don’t need to weld them all the time.
Hmmm, so I have to say I think they are a better idea than the stock headpipes for a wiggle motorcycle.

DEAN AND DEBBIE ANDERSON– Early Tuesday morning, only a few hours after making her final appearance at our Monday night giveaway show during our 10th Anniversary High Seas Rally and getting a standing ovation, Debbie slipped into unconsciousness and died Wednesday Oct 31 at 2:15 pm.in the ships infirmary. She was in no pain. Her last wishes were to be on this 10th Anniversary High Seas Rally cruise.
Debbie was the co-owner of the High Seas Rally and sole creator of the HOHS Dialysis Fund. While I (Dean) got the fun part of the job creating the games to raise the dialysis money, Debbie was the heart and soul, who made it happen. Until just this year when her health was failing, she handled all patients and all paperwork since the beginning. Raising almost $300,000 on this 2012 Rally cruise alone and over 1.6 million since 2003. A tireless worker and humanitarian, loved by all who met her.
Two years ago almost to this day, Debbie was diagnosed with a rare form of not one, but two kinds of lung cancer. Since Debbie never smoked, her odds of getting lung cancer were less than 3%. In addition, the 2 forms of lung cancer she contracted only show up in 2% of all cancer patients. That’s just plain bad luck. Given only six months to live, she bravely fought on for two years and beat the one cancer in her lungs, but the second cancer moved to her liver and we never did get ahead of it.
During this cruise, we know our veteran High Seas Rally cruisers knew something was terribly wrong because we have been together for 40 years, married for 37 and are rarely seen more than a few feet apart but it was my decision alone to not mention this situation to our friends and passengers. Only myself, my son Cody, his wife Carla and ship medical staff knew of her death. None of our staff knew. It was much too painful for me to mention during the cruise and would have been in direct conflict with what this rally is all about. Debbie also agreed.
She requested to be cremated and have no funeral. Instead, she wished us to have a party in her honor on a future High Seas Rally cruise. She was, is and always will be, the most important person in my life. Although I know you all wish me well, please do not attempt to contact me personally for the next 30 days. Creating the High Seas Rally was easy compared to writing this. I need some alone time to get through this. She was my angel. Once again, thanks everyone for making Debbie’s Dialysis Fund and the High Seas Rally a runaway success. Rest assured, the show will go on.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation to the HOHS Dialysis Fund will help continue Debbie’s passion and is greatly appreciated.

The doctor told her that teenagers today were very willful and any attempt to stop the girl would probably result in rebellion. He then told her to arrange for her daughter to be put on birth control and until then, talk to her and give her a box of condoms.

SAVE A LATE MODEL 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION TECH BY ROGUE–The Attitude Chain Adjuster solves the issues associated with the stock auto tensioner. The concern most have with the stock adjuster is its ability to over-tighten the chain. How can that happen? Well, the first moment the chain has enough slack to it to ratchet the shoe up another notch, and thus tightening the chain, it will. One notch tighter might not be an issue, but you don’t have any control of when this mechanism stops tightening the chain.
The end result in many cases is the primary chain is so tight that it will start wearing out left side motor case bearings, inner primary bearings, clutch hub bearings and transmission output gear bearings. KENDON SAVES THE DAY—A brother had a breakdown with his new FLH. It was a freak deal and maybe he just rattled a brake cable free, because his battery let go and left him along side the road in Orange County.
He needed to haul it quick to California Harley, in Harbor City, we loaned him our Kendon Combo stand-up trailer. He was so impressed with it, and the ease to load his bike he immediately ordered a Kendon trailer.

ABATE OF ARIZONA SUPPORTS THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION—There is just one organization looking out for all of motorcycling from a federal level. You might say the MIC can do the job, but they have a predominate mandate to support manufacturers, which restricts them. The AMA is helpful, but involved primarily in the sporting aspects of motorcycling.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is funded by individual memberships and state motorcycle rights groups. It’s a non-profit and struggling in this economy. We were finally able to add the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Industry Council to the mix to support shops and the aftermarket side. We hope to start a committee in 2013 and build support for this side of the industry. We are going to need it.
ABATE of AZ voted last Sunday at the State BOD meeting to donate $2,000.00 or more annually thanks to Eric.This is a big step from where AZ was a couple years ago.They also voted to donate $1,000.00 to MRFA&E.
I was there and thanked them on behalf of both MRF & MRF&E.

UNCLE MONKEY ON OBESITY– I wish I could say I’m the ripped 165 lb. hottie I was when my son was born, or even the 200 lbs hulking bruiser when I played AAA hockey. No, time has marched on and a combination of back injuries, poor diet and a sedate lifestyle has left me in less then ideal shape unless you consider me round.
While I’m nowhere I want to be weight wise I have made progress from my low point of 270. It has been a slow and rough road trying to balance exercises that won’t inflame my back and eating healthy. I’d love to throw the heavy weights around like I did in my youth but I’m working on strengthen/toning and not bulking up. For the most part, my diet is not that horrible, not great but not as tragic as my fellow classmates in the dietary class my doc sent me to. Deep fried grill cheese sandwiches are a delicious meal that I haven’t tried.
Hitting the gym is hard work and the results are not instantaneous like we wish. Small increments back towards health. I didn’t get this badly out of shape overnight, so it is unrealistic to think I can get there by next week. Being healthy is a lifestyle choice. It means changing bad habits for good ones, eating carrot sticks instead of chips, eating a full balanced meal instead of skipping until the next meal. Our bodies need fuel and if it doesn’t get it regularly it hangs on to the fat storages it has.
My gym is an average person’s gym. There are no Mr Olympian meatheads flexing in the mirror with arms bigger then my torso. No makeup Barbies. Everyone is there to workout and that’s it. Some are taking their first steps towards healthiness, others are well on their way and others who have made it and exercise is an ingrained habit of maintaining.
So my advise to you is to get up off the couch, drink a few less beers, eat smaller – balanced meals, exercise more and live a longer life.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON Nürnberg Validates JIMS 131-INCH Twin
Cam Race Engine For Legal Use On European Roads–Fritz Jonak, owner of Harley-Davidson/Buell Nürnberg in Germany, has spent the last 18 months and made a huge personal investment sending the JIMS 131-inch Twin Cam Race Engine through the TÜV certification process.
With the autobahn in mind, Fritz wanted to certify an engine that could perform and withstand the demands of sustained periods of high speed on a daily basis. Straight to the point, the JIMS 131 is now TÜV approved!
After certification, H-D of Nürnberg installed JIMS 131’s into a stock Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide and a stock Harley-Davidson FXD Fat Bob, both bikes easily smoked a Shelby GT Mustang with a 427 cubic inch engine and both stock Harleys were able to handle the extra power with no issues. BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HISTORY IN RELIGION CLASS–There were five houses of religion in a small town: The Presbyterian Church, The Baptist Church, The Methodist Church, The Catholic Church and The Jewish Synagogue. Each church and Synagogue was overrun with pesky squirrels.
One day, the Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will.
In The BAPTIST CHURCH the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and there were twice as many there the next week.
The Methodist Church got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creation. So, they humanely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.
But — The Catholic Church came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter.
Not much was heard about the Jewish Synagogue, but they took one squirrel and had a short service with him called circumcision and they haven’t seen a squirrel on the property since.

JACK LUNA PASSED THIS WEEK–I have received the information for Jack Luna’s memorial service. The messages and pictures everyone have been posting on our Hamster Facebook page are so nice. Jack would have loved it. I have heard some great stories this past week about Jack’s generosity and things he would do for his fellow Hamsters and friends.
We’ve had a lot of good laughs and fun over the years for sure. He will be missed by everyone.

DMV ALERT, FLORIDA CHANGES VERTICAL PLATE LAW–House Bill 1223 DHSMV changed the wording of S 316.2085(3) (Change 2012-181) to read “The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed to the vehicle and remain clearly visible from the rear at all times.
Any deliberate act to conceal or obscure the legibility of the license tag of a motorcycle is prohibited. The license tag of a motorcycle or moped may be affixed horizontally to the ground so that the numbers and letters read from left to right. Alternatively, a license tag for a motorcycle or moped for which the numbers and letters read from top to bottom may be affixed perpendicularly to the ground.
Notwithstanding the authorization to affix the license tag of a motorcycle or moped perpendicularly to the ground, the owner or operator of a motorcycle or moped shall pay any required toll pursuant to s. 316.1001 by whatever means available.”
This change deleted – “provided that the registered owner of the motorcycle or moped maintains a prepaid toll account in good standing and a transponder associated with the prepaid toll account is affixed to the motorcycle or moped.”

SEARS SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS– I needed this reminder, since Sears isn’t always my first choice. It ‘s amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and Sears hasn’t withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year? What commitment you say?
How does Sears treat its employees who are serving in our military? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being on active duty.
Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all employees who are serving. ??
I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution.

SUZUKI FILES CHAPTER 11–American Suzuki Moves To Shut Down Auto Business, Boost Motorcycles.
Suzuki will pull out of the American auto market, refocusing efforts on its motorcycle division, said a spokesman for the company. American Suzuki Motor Co. will file Chapter 11 bankruptcy to close its American auto division and protect assets, which will redirected to its motorcycle, ATV and boat business.
The bankruptcy ends a 27-year foray into the American auto market, which posted a 5% loss in sales last year in a market that grew by 14%.
Japan’s 4th ranked automaker struggled in the U.S., suffering, according to analysts, from a lack of investment in new vehicles, a strong yen (which made exports more expensive), a lack of model diversity and cars that did not capture buyer imagination.
“The Japanese parent company plans to buy the motorcycle, ATV and outboard engine operations out of bankruptcy and shift its auto business to service existing vehicles on the road. The new U.S. operating unit plans to keep the American Suzuki name,” added the spokesman.

MISSING CAR KEYS–Several days ago as I left a meeting at a hotel; I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down.
I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets.
A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing.
Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car.
Frantically, I headed for the parking lot
My husband has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition.
My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen.
As I burst through the door, I came to a terrifying conclusion. His theory was right. The parking lot was empty.
I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.
Then I made the most difficult call of all, “Honey,” I
stammered; ( I always call him “honey” in times like these.)
“I left my keys in the car and it’s been stolen.”
There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard his voice.
“Are you kiddin’ me”, he barked, “I dropped you off”!!!!!!!
Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, “Well, come and get me.”
He retorted, “I will, as soon as I convince this cop I didn’t steal your car.”
Yep, it’s the golden years!

ANOTHER WEEKEND IN PARADISE—So tomorrow we will repair Buster’s shrunken FXR with the help of Scott from BDL. I need to put together a tech with Scott on a new BDL/GMA Softail braking system for rear wheels.
I’m about to post another chapter of World Run. I can’t wait to hide in the mountains and run through the entire book before it goes to print. I will interview Jokey from Jamie’s Customs & Power Sports for a bike feature on his Cinnamon chopper from the Milwaukee Harley AMD show. I have two bike features from the first AMD show with Harley-Davidson, back in August. I look forward to featuring both bikes. Maybe choppers will make a comeback.
I’ll tweak my son’s Mudflap Girl FXR and take it for a putt around the block. I have a street Crane Cam and a set of lifters ready. I need to pop his bike on the Kendon and peel over to Bennett’s for the installation.
Then I need to work with Trish at Baker. In the near future you will see plenty of Bikernet techs on Baker’s web site. I’m working with Ben at Rivera to straighten out my primary belt drive on my 1928 Shovelhead, then there’s an issue with the oil tank and I’m off to the DMV to finalize registration.
Never a dull moment at the Bikernet Headquarters. We are actually making some headway on some of the rooms in the café, and progress with the front of the building. It’s amazing, in this economy, I could not find a contractor with a little imagination. I tried everything from handymen to full blown contractors, nothing. Then just this week we met a guy who gave us a fair bid in a day and went to work this week—progress.
I fired my deck architect today, after waiting 10 months for plans. I hired a new guy, Paul Collins, who said my plans for the deck will be done in a week, again progress. So suddenly shit starts to fly, and I need to find the money to keep it all going. That’s my job.
Veterans, enjoy the weekend, and make the time to go for a ride.
