Hey,
I woke up lost this morning. I wanted to get up early and hit the post, but I slept funky. I woke up with questions and concerns blasting around my head like rats on acid.
Yesterday we entered my 2014 Indian in the Long Beach Easyriders Show, then we scooted over around noon to attend the well attended show. It looked packed with action, custom bikes, celebrity builders like Paul Yaffe, and cute girls. What could be better. It was cool, and the show circuit is just starting.
It was also cool to see many of the old staff members. It’s been a long time and I started there in the very beginning, 1971, that’s 45 years. Holy shit.
Let’s hit the news

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER ALERT– The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims. A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum.
The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration, but doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phrase “blowin’ smoke up your ass.”
It has been reintroduced in Washington by the Obama Administration as an integral part of the new Health Care Program.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON TOP SELLING ROAD BIKE IN AUSTRALIA– During 2015, for the very first time Harley-Davidson topped road bike sales down under, moving right past Honda.
Harley-Davidson led the volume race in the road motorcycle market, selling 21 per cent of the total road motorcycles sold. Harley-Davidson was followed by Honda with 16.7 per cent of the market, followed by Yamaha with 15.4 per cent.
And the Breakout was the best selling model in the Harley-Davidson range, sharing in the impressive growth in the Aussie cruiser market.
But not too far behind is the learner-approved Street 500, which came in just behind the Breakout in terms of total numbers.
Most impressively, Harley-Davidson now accounts for more than one in every five road bikes sold.

THE AUSTRALIAN MOTORCYCLE MARKET REPORT–
Here’s the latest figures, remember, despite having a land mass the same size as the lower 48 states, more people live in Long Beach and SoCal than in all of Australia.
Well, not quite . . .
But our total population is just under 30 million.
Pro rate bike sales are good.
Australia’s new motorcycle market was steady in 2015, with motorcycle, ATV and scooter sales reaching 108,711*—on par with 2014 figures.
Honda was the largest selling brand, holding 22.5 per cent of the total motorcycle, ATV and scooter market.
In second place was Yamaha with 21.4 per cent of the market (23,290), and a very strong 14.2 per cent growth over 2014, largely driven by a healthy 30.7 per cent increase in road bike sales.
Kawasaki was third with 9.8 per cent (10,675), Suzuki was fourth with 9 per cent (9,806) and Harley-Davidson was fifth with 9 per cent (9,790).
Road bike sales were strong, increasing 2.6 per cent compared to 2014 and accounting for 41.4 per cent of the total market. Australians rode home on a total of 45,013 new road bikes in 2015.
Harley-Davidson took out the top position for sales in the road bike category. Harley-Davidson’s 9,790 new road bike sales accounted for 21.7 per cent of the total road bike market. Honda was the second highest selling brand, in this category, with 17.1 per cent of road bike sales (7,691). Honda was followed by Yamaha with 15.4 per cent (6,914), Kawasaki with 12.7 per cent (5,731) and BMW with 7.1 per cent (3,201).
Off-road motorcycle purchases accounted for almost 35 per cent of total market sales, with 37,982 Australians taking home a new off-road bike. The popularity of these vehicles has remained relatively steady from 2014, with the 37,982 sales representing a 0.8 per cent increase on 2014 figures.
Yamaha again led the market for off-road motorcycles, selling 31.7 per cent (12,048) of the total off-road bikes sold. Yamaha was followed by Honda with 27.2 per cent (10,318), KTM with 15.2 per cent (5,787), Suzuki with 11.7 per cent (4,432) and Kawasaki with 9.8 per cent (3,713).
The ATV market grew by 1.2 per cent in 2015 (compared to 2014), with a total of 20,327 ATVs sold. The total sales represent 18.7 per cent of the total 2015 motorcycle market. Honda was the leading ATV brand, selling 27.2 per cent (5,526) of the total ATV sales. Polaris was second with 25.1 per cent (5,095), Yamaha was third with 19.3 per cent (3,922), Suzuki was fourth with 11.2 per cent (2,283) and BRP was fifth with 9.4 per cent (1,901)
Scooter sales continue to decline, with total sales in 2015 down 22.7 per cent on 2014 sales figures. Vespa topped the list in the scooter market, selling 19.4 per cent (1,044) of the total 5,389 scooters sold. Piaggio came in second with 18.8 per cent (1,011), Honda was third with 18.6 per cent (1,000), Aprillia was fourth with 9 per cent (487) and Yamaha was fifth with 7.5 per cent (406). Scooter sales account for 5 per cent of the total motorcycle market.
* Sales figures some brands were not fully reported in 2015, owing to individual circumstances.

NEW FROM TRIUMPH– The Bonneville Launch Party was a huge success with one of the largest attendance numbers in the country!
Chicago……New York…..San Francisco…….Boyertown?
Last Thursday night, the winter’s darkness was broken as our showroom was packed with nearly 400 Triumph enthusiasts for the unveiling of the new Bonneville Family.
Triumph has been presenting the new bikes at most of the major cities in the US and little ole Boyertown was among the largest events in the country!
The full line up was represented and as a bonus, the all new Speed Triple was also displayed. Triumph’s Bill Shelton and the factory team unloaded displays, presented the bikes and packed up for the area exclusive one night event.
Great food and drink was consumed while listening to Chris LaRose’s great music. Trevor Borchelt captured these pictures during the evening’s festivities.
The new Street Twin, T120 and Thruxton R were very well received with 7 enthusiasts stepping up with deposits to ensure early delivery. Most of these new bikes are in very short supply so act now to secure a 2016 Bonneville!
Thank you for coming and congratulations to the 7 new Bonneville owners!
Are you ready for the 6th Modern Classics?

As much a social event as a bike show, at The Modern Classics you can meet the presenters, learn the history of each bike or just spend time with the machines that made you a motorcyclist.
As we did in 2015, there will be two separate events on the same weekend. On Friday night, March 4th, we will host the Modern Classics Kickstart Party followed on Saturday (March 5th) with the wildly popular Modern Classics Show.
Get your tickets for the Kickstart Party early because there is a limit. If you have a bike you think should be in Modern Classics follow this link to nominate it.

DHS DELAYS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS– But Real ID Still Stirs Controversy.
In last week’s e-newsletter (DHS Moves to Restrict Travel: NMA E-Newsletter #365) we updated you on Real ID and the possibility of domestic air travel restrictions for passengers who couldn’t produce an acceptable ID. The good news is that the Department of Homeland Security just announced it will hold off on enforcing any restrictions for two years to give noncompliant states a chance to fall in line.
We received a fair amount of feedback on last week’s newsletter (selected comments shown below), surprisingly most of it in favor of tighter air travel restrictions in the name of security. More than one NMA member brought up the “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” argument in reference to the privacy concerns Real ID raises.
We won’t take the time to rebut that here, but we encourage you to look at this page from the National Security Agency (NSA), titled not ironically “Your Data: If You Have Nothing to Hide, You Have Nothing to Fear.” Read through the lengthy list of data the NSA collects on you and then decide if you have nothing to fear.
From a California Member:
This is such BAD news. The Federal Government was given specific and restricted duties that were enumerated in our U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8. And over time they have jumped over their boundaries and have usurped the state’s and the people’s rights, becoming totally lawless! I know this is not news to you. The American people are being cooked, but like a frog, when the heat is turned up so gradually they don’t notice until it is too late.
If 28 sovereign states have not “complied,” then it is apparent that the people do not want this.
And as you point out, a driver’s license is supposed to signify that the holder is a competent driver. Here we have Mission Creep at its best.
I was looking at the requirements for an Enhanced License in Wisconsin. How does one prove they are a citizen/legal resident? Proof of identity and proof of SSN? Would a birth certificate alone cover all of this? Since I was born here, I have never thought about how to prove this information. By the way, do you remember the days when the SS Administration said “For Social Security Purposes – Not for Identification”? Mission Creep all around us.
But since 9/11 and the implementation of the TSA, the gropers and the nudie machines, I have decided never to fly again. However, you do point out that this could impact our travel freedoms on the road in the days ahead. Enough is enough!
From Lars Holst, Alabama:
In a perfect world there would be no need to carry identification, but the world is far from perfect. Also, the requirement to identify an individual does not restrict travel unless there is a good reason to prevent the individual from doing so. Your headline and parts of your article are misleading.
If passport and/or Real ID requirements will make it more difficult for criminals or terrorists to move freely, I am all for it. As a former soldier, I have never had a problem carrying an ID card or being required to identify myself; I do so as a matter of course and proudly. In my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the potentially minor inconvenience of identification.
The way I see it, only individuals that have something to hide would be against such a requirement, which, by the way, should also apply to banking, voting and other similar activities. Citing privacy concerns is nothing but pure paranoia unless it is just another poor excuse for not doing anything.
Sure most documents can be falsified and nothing is 100 percent, but it would be yet another hurdle for the wrongdoer to overcome. Why make it easy for them?
Most European countries, including Austria and Germany, require their citizens to have and carry a personal identity card. I lived and worked in Europe off and on for some 45 years and was never adversely affected.
Before the advent of EU and the Schengen agreement, you had to show your passport to cross from one country into another. With the Schengen agreement, that requirement fell away for the signatory countries, but those same countries have learned the hard way that such relatively minor benefits can have major adverse effects when it comes to controlling the movements of illegal immigrants, criminals and/or terrorists. Efforts to reinstitute passport control at national borders are underway.
An ID requirement does not make a totalitarian state if that is what you are worried about, and if that is your concern, begin exhorting people to vote and try to reach the broad population, not just the NMA membership. Now that would be a worthy cause.
Editor’s Note: Issues regarding Real ID, privacy, travel restrictions and government control won’t be going away any time soon. Where do you stand on the security vs. privacy debate? We’d like to hear from you.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY STAY OPEN ON SUNDAYS– Fighter Pilots are steely eyed, weapons systems managers who kill bad people and break things. However, they can also be very charming and personable. The average fighter pilot, despite sometimes having a swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. (However, these feelings don’t involve anyone else.)

AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT– Victorian police claim MC has ‘money troubles’
The Finks motorcycle club has been having money problems, a Melbourne magistrate has heard.
“The club is not in a very good financial position,” Detective Senior Constable Claire Turner told the court as part of a bail application by the club’s sergeant at arms, Jye Carter.
“We have a number of intelligence reports that the club is concerned about the ability to pay its legal bills,” she added.
Carter, 37, is among 17 members of the Finks who were charged after a series of raids across Melbourne on December, including at the groups clubhouse in Ringwood.
The club members face a range of charges including conspiracy to kidnap and extort and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary as well as drugs and weapons offences.
The raids came after a four-month investigation and marked the first time the Finks MC was targeted in Victoria.
Local police were concerned that members of Queensland clubs had travelled to Victoria after a crackdown by the government in Queensland.
Carter has been charged with conspiring to commit aggravated burglary, conspiracy to commit extortion, possessing a firearm and breaching bail.
Court documents reveal Carter and others allegedly planned to extort $10,000 from a former club member who was kicked out of the club in October.
The documents reveal that police have details of meetings of club officials including Carter — called ‘church meetings’ by members — gained through the use of cameras and listening devices.
The court heard the extortion plots may have been motivated by the club’s money problems.
The bail hearing also revealed allegations that club members discussed stealing money and drugs from another former member who had joined the Mongols motorcycle club.
Many Finks members joined the US-based Mongols in 2013. The court heard Carter moved to the Mongols, but later returned to the Finks.
Prosecutor Peter Rose opposed Carter’s bail.
“Violence was not just talked about, there were weapons,” he told the court.
Court documents allege Carter was caught on camera holding a semi-automatic hand gun, when he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Carter’s lawyer Adrian Lewin argued there were “just associations”, not direct evidence, to prove his client was involved in the conspiracies, as Carter had been in jail until the middle of October.
Annette Carter, the defendant’s mother, told Magistrate Suzanne Cameron that her son could live with her if he was bailed.
Ms Carter told the court she had not had much contact with her son in the past 10 years, until she moved to Melbourne early last year.
She also said she would report him to the authorities if he was in breach of his bail conditions.
But prosecutor Peter Rose argued against it.
“Her ability to curtail his criminal activity you’d have to say is really non-existent,” Mr Rose said. “These are serious, not minor offences.”
Mr Lewin said the case against his client was not overwhelming.
“How much is bluster and how much is reality?” he asked the court.
Mr Rose said Carter had breached bail conditions in the past, failing to abide by curfew, residency and reporting requirements.
“He’s been given chances, he’s had bail,” Mr Rose told the court.
Magistrate Cameron rejected the bail application.
“You can have a whole suite of conditions but they are useless if he shows a propensity of non-compliance,” she told the court.
“Previous bail [rulings] had stringent conditions but they were breached and he further offended.”
THE TRIKING VIKING COVERS THE ELVIS AND THE LAKE SHRINE TEMPLE TOUR– Nested in 10 acres surrounding what’s called Santa Ynez Lake (more like a large pond) 1/4 mile from the Pacific Ocean just up sunset Blvd from the coast.
It honors the five major world religions and includes a memorial to Mahatma Ghandi where a portion of his ashes are said to be enshrined.
The grounds have been compared to a Disney version of a botanical garden with everything manicured and pristinely perfect.

A NEW WEEK COMING UP— Each week presents us with tremendous opportunities. It’s up to us to step up and make them happen. At the end of each week we have the opportunity to review our project lists and click off the accomplishments and progress.
I make a list every week and go after it with a vengeance. I’m cool with my projects and responsibilities. But when others are involved and you are forced to rely on them, sometimes shit slips.
I try to do my part then hope for progress. So, now I’m gritting my teeth over the building, since the city jumped into the mix, and our trike effort is waiting on a frame for too long. It has me pacing the decks.
And here’s another challenge. Do you receive our e-mail blog announcements? Are we sending them too often? How can we improve them?
