I’m watching a series of lecturers on inventions and it’s amazing. One of the first inventions was pottery, which led to the pottery wheel and to motorcycle wheels.
Of course, one of the next major inventions was beer and wine. Had to have something to pour into the pottery. But there’s a fascinating one still not addressed in our society today. We can now document the history of the universe, but our sewer systems, which are still not available to 1/3 of the earth’s population (which means contamination and disease), is still not as good as the one established by the romans.
So, what the fuck? They can regulate the hell out of us, when they should take a serious look at our wasteful sewer system and figure out a way for using something other than valuable fresh water to flush toilets. Amazing.

2017 EDISON DYE LIFETIME ACHIEMENT AWARD TO MALCOLM SMITH

JACK SIMMONS R.I.P.
I am sad to say that Jack Simmons passed away on October 23rd in Spokane, Washington. He had been suffering with Multiple Myeloma for some time and a fall put him in the hospital.
Jack was Bill Getty’s dear friend and mentor. He taught Bill to ride a motorcycle. Anyone who knew Jack was aware of his deep faith in Christ. Bill will miss being able to call him for advice or to reflect on the many trail rides they did together, but Bill knows he is out of pain and with the Lord.
In some of the many emails Jack was remembered as a “tuff competitor”, “threat at Ascot and on the SoCal scrambles tracks” and a feisty but good guy. His wife, Ethel, has had dementia for a few years and will be moving in with their daughter, Sherry and husband Jim.
Their son Jack and his wife, plus Sherry and Jim, were with Jack. There are lots of good memories of Jack. I will also miss his calls. God Speed Jack.
WINNERS AT THE AFT FINAL ASCOT BIKE CONTEST
Clyde Williams was the big winner with his two Nortons. Clyde took home the $100.00, plus a nice placard from Bob Basisle in honor of his dad, Don Basile.
The bike with 28R is the Harold Allison Norton Trackmaster that Jody Nicholas, David Aldana & eight other riders that are documented as racing it at Ascot from late 1970 to late 1976.
The number 90 Norton Red Line Norton 750 is one that Mel Lacher built and raced at Ascot for the 1971 & 1972 seasons. What is especially unique, both bikes carry national numbers and actually raced against each other at Ascot. Congrats and thanks for bring it out.

BROC GLOVER RECEIVED MOTOCROSS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The award was bestowed on him in England for his many contributions to motocross racing over 40 years, including on and off the track, U.S. and International. He retired from racing in the late 1980s and is now Dunlap’s Senior manager of off road. He has been with Dunlap for 16 years. Very deserving.

Terry Vance set records at the NHRA Drag Race in Dallas, but George Bryce won the final. The Motorcycle Safety Act was dropped by Senator John C. Danforth in 187. It could have led to a ban on Japanese “superbikes”.

TEACHING KIDS TO INTERACT WITH POLICE— will it help?
Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia have passed legislation that mandates schools teach students how to conduct themselves around police. Texas passed its law in the last legislative session and mandated that high schools and especially driver’s education courses train students how to conduct themselves around law enforcement. Texas also passed a law to train police on how to de-escalate situations. Indeed, education on both sides is needed to help improve the overall fear that many citizens have for the police.
These measures on how to teach children to interact with police have come under criticism by groups such as Black Lives Matter, which say a curriculum like this could place the blame for violent encounters plus the burden of preventing them on civilians. Some police advocacy groups are also worried that it encourages and worsen the fears the young and the old already have about cops.
New Jersey lawmakers are now working on a bill that would require every school district to teach about police responsibilities and civilians’ rights. The first part of the curriculum would be taught in elementary school while middle and high school students would have further training. The curriculum has not yet been created. Bill sponsors want input from police advocacy groups and community organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union.
New Jersey Black Lives Matter Chapter organizer Alexis Miller says the bill’s concept is fundamentally flawed. “This bill is clearly designed to create a scapegoat for police brutality, and that scapegoat is New Jersey’s children.” She added, “Students are expected to master the idea of responsibility politics in order to protect themselves from officers.”
Let’s face it—encounters with the police at any age can incite fear and anxiety in a person.
Senior Policy Counsel at the New York Civil Liberties Union Michael Sistzky said, “I do think it’s a bit ridiculous that we have this frame where it’s the responsibility of civilians to control themselves and protect themselves in these encounters, especially when you think about the power disparities between someone stopped in the street and an officer with a badge and a gun.” He added, “But in the absence of real accountability for police, knowing your rights is better than nothing.”
Most encounters with police are through traffic stops. Educating future motorists about their rights and responsibilities towards driving and police may help the fear factor some but in the end it is all about the moment.
Thirty-two year old cafeteria worker Philando Castile had been pulled over 49 times in 13 years (or about once every three months) for minor infractions. He was stopped for a cracked taillight and told Officer Yanez that he was carrying a gun in the car with a legal permit. As he reached for his registration in his glove compartment, he was shot several times while his girlfriend and her child were in the car.
Would learning how to handle a traffic stop helped Philando Castile? Getting stopped that many times in so many years was already an education in itself. What might have helped more is supporting Officer Yanez with additional and ongoing training support to better de-escalate the situation before Castile became another statistic.
States, like Texas, are starting to understand that an educational component needs to be there for law enforcement officers who need additional training support to make sure tragedies like Castile’s don’t happen.

ROLAND SANDS LAWSUIT– Alaska Man Files Lawsuit Over Motorcycle Mishap at Concert
An Alaska man who says he was hit by a motorcycle that flew offstage during a 2016 Buffalo Chip Campground concert has filed a federal lawsuit against the campground, the rider and the bike company.
The Argus Leader reports that Royce Rath was in the crowd during the Aug. 2016 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally festivities at the campground. The complaint filed this week says in between concert performers Lita Ford and Kid Rock, showman Roland Sands road a motorcycle designed without front brakes across the stage and into a crowd of spectators.
The lawsuit says Rath suffered permanent disability, medical expenses and the loss of wages and earning capacity. Federal court records don’t list attorneys for Sands, Polaris Industries or Buffalo Chip Campground.

UNCLE MONKEY ON FLAKES– As the first flakes of snow begin to blow swirling around those yard projects you never did quite get to you find yourself in the garage staring at your bike dreaming of warm summer days thundering across this great country.
Those days are gone now and the long dredge of winter rattles the windows. You put a lot of miles on the old bike the last couple of years and a long stretch of summer days off last year nag you to head to the Smokey Mountains, the Badlands or to carve up the coast before the Big Sur gets any bigger.
You know if you start cleaning up those wires you’ll end up rewiring the whole bike. The drain plug on the primary is seized so you know you’ll be pulling that off. Maybe just giving it a good wipe down but that crude around the fender struts has been driving you crazy, so you know you’ll probably pull the fender to give it a proper cleaning. But you know that the frame is looking crusty too.
So here you sit staring at the bike wonder what to do. Do the bare minimum and keep focused on the build on the lift. Just work on it on the floor, so you don’t get too carried away but your knees and back hurt just thinking about it.
If you put it on the lift you know you’ll get swept up in fixing this and that and end up doing a complete rebuild which you promised you wouldn’t do until the other bike was finished.
You put a note pad on the bench and jot down to fix the wiring to the left front signal light. You turn your attention to the bike on the lift stopping briefly to add other items to the list.
Really other than some cans of spray paint you wouldn’t have to buy a whole lot of parts. You turn the calendar to the new month. It’s a long winter if the snow sticks like they think it will.
The project keeps the wrenches spinning but now you are wonder how you had done that thing on the other bike because it is so much cleaner the way you’re doing it now.
A couple quick twists of the wrenches removes the seat confirming what a hack job you had done years before on the old bike. ROCK ON is Right On!– I have to laugh at the Zero deaths concept promoted by NHTSA and picked up by the various state DOTs. A very lofty goal, and certainly something we could all wish for, I guess.
But in reality, it will never happen unless, as News Master Keith Ball points out, we subject ourselves to the “Bubble” existence of zero risk. By isolating ourselves at home in sterile cells, we could virtually wipe out communicable disease. Removing or outlawing risky behavior as defined by government could lead to the elimination of fractures, concussions, lacerations and blunt force trauma.
We’re already heading in that direction with the dismantling of certain recreation equipment at parks and other public places like swings, monkey-bars and horizontal bars. In the past, we were encouraged to get out of the house and exercise on such apparatus. Now, it’s forbidden.
Will contact sports like football, soccer and rugby be banned soon? In a movement to protect us and increase our lifespan, governments are instituting new initiatives. Unable to stem the rising tide of injuries due to motor vehicle crashes, autonomous vehicles appears to be the solution for the future. To achieve this objective, fossil fuel powered vehicles need to be eliminated.
After all, emissions from these vehicles is causing global warming, the hysteria-causing buzz words that terrify environmentalists. Demonizing these fuels will aid in the development and acceptance of autonomous vehicles that are completely controlled by computer.
The human element will be eliminated in driving and we will become denizens of a captive-commuter society. No need to look out the window, experience nature around us or notice other beings in our world. We can escape from reality by reading or day dreaming during our travels, secure in knowing the possibility of a crash is non-existent.
Guns will be totally banned from society (only government will be allowed to be armed), no fast food restaurants (in fact, nutrition will be handled by government provided supplements that will fulfill our dietary needs.
The goal is a healthy society that contributes to the government through taxes while eliminating lost income due to illness or injury. Curfews will be enacted to restrict people from going outdoors after dark, a time for mishaps due to reduced vision. All this in the name of safety––the Zero Vision for tomorrow. Isn’t it great to live in America, the land of the free?

It has come to our attention that some Indiana residents have been caught up in a scam regarding documents necessary to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. ABATE of Indiana represents all Hoosier motorcyclists and is very concerned anytime one of us is harmed.
Although we have not been given details from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), it appears that someone has made copies of the state form used to issue a waiver for skills test and forged the signature of a former ABATE instructor. This unlawful act of greed casts an ugly and undeserved shadow on the instructor’s reputation, as well as that of ABATE of Indiana.
We have heard a number of stories from people that have been caught up in this situation. One admitted to giving “a guy in the bar $100” in exchange for the paper. Others advise that they attended a makeshift course and spent “a couple hours riding around cones” before receiving the document. Some claim to have paid as much as $350 for this “class”.
At some point, the BMV suspected something (perhaps a large number of waivers with the same instructor, date, etc…) and began to look closer at how some folks acquired their motorcycle endorsement. If the BMV was unable to confirm that the applicant had successfully completed a legitimate rider course, they suspended not only the motorcycle endorsement, but also the operator’s license, and in some cases the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), of the individual.
ABATE of Indiana’s rider education program began in 1979 and has had a contract with the state to provide courses every year since the inception of the state legislated program (that we lobbied to create in 1986), except 2017. This includes 2015 when we were required to sign a contract to be able to offer a waiver (for skills test) even though we received zero assistance from the state.
Our students bore the entire expense in their tuition, and we had to spend about a quarter of a million dollars for motorcycles while the Bureau of Motor Vehicles chose to park hundreds of bikes outside in the snow and let them deteriorate, rather than allow us to use this equipment to train students.
Furthermore, misinformation from the BMV advised riders that the course offered by ABATE of Indiana was not valid for a waiver, when in fact, it was. This issue continued throughout the entire 2015 and 2016 training seasons, despite repeated pledges from the BMV to correct it. In 2017, inaccurate and incomplete information persists, as the BMV advises Hoosiers that “ABATE… (is) not an option”.
While the BMV’s repeated mis-information to riders is frustrating for us, the reason we provided this brief history is because it is even more frustrating to the motorcyclists of Indiana.
Up until 2015, information regarding rider courses was pretty clear and consistent. Unfortunately, there is currently a great deal of confusion confronting riders and seemingly nowhere to obtain correct, consistent, definitive answers. With 20 or so contractors offering training, and no single source for registration, it is difficult for those persons seeking training to understand what is going on and just what “is an option”.
We managed to get along for about 25 years without any sort of fraud, using a card printed on card stock in blue ink, with a watermark. We controlled the distribution of these cards from our office and limited the personnel that had access to them. The BMV introduced a new form just a few years ago that was simply black ink on white paper. We expressed concern regarding the security of this document from the beginning.
It certainly looks like there are some victims here. It sounds like some of these folks truly believed that they were participating in a legitimate training course and have now had their license suspended, significantly impacting their lives and livelihood.
If you have any information related to this situation, please reach out and contact the Indiana State Police, or call the ABATE office if you are more comfortable doing so. We want to get to the bottom of this in hopes that it may assist those that were victimized.

TARGETED FOR EXISTING– Where Pop Culture Ends and Real Life Begins for America’s Bikers
When I first spoke with “Professor Blade” I noticed a subtle accent; “Former British Army” he informed me, though he now resides in the San Diego area. In addition to his accent, I noticed he was remarkably polite and articulate, which isn’t surprising given his career as a middle school teacher and college professor.
What IS surprising however, is the fact that this man was recently arrested, charged with a felony and held on a $125k bail. So why was this man, former military and college educator without any criminal record arrested? He says he was profiled by California State police, simply because he was riding a motorcycle.
Though entertaining, bikers openly mock the hit TV show, “Sons of Anarchy” which portrays a fictional outlaw motorcycle club as murderers, rapists and drug addicts who all use excessive violence to get what they want.
Unfortunately, for the 8 million Americans who ride, perception can be reality. Professor Blade and members of his motorcycle club “The Chosen Few” know this all too well. He says he and his fellow club members have been targeted by local law enforcement for years.
“There’s a bar we all go to pretty regularly,” Professor Blade tells me. “The night I was arrested I was there for a party for a friend who is in the marines. When we arrived, I could see police staked out across the street from the bar, just watching and waiting.”
Upon leaving the party he was pulled over the second he turned out of the parking lot on his motorcycle. The impetus for the stop? Loud pipes—a reason Professor Blade finds suspect given they were in close proximity to the Miramar Air Station.
“It was so loud we couldn’t even hear the sound from the police dash camera. There is no way he heard my pipes which are in full compliance with California state law.”
Ultimately, Professor Blade wasn’t cited for his pipes, but he was questioned about the leadership of his motorcycle club and then arrested for possession of brass knuckles and a deadly weapon.
One of the “brass knuckles” that prompted his arrest? His wedding ring. The deadly weapon? A 24-inch decorative whip that was zip-tied to his handlebar on the throttle side. Police arrested him, confiscated his bike and a judge set his bail at $125,000.
It would be unfair to pin the perception of equating bikers to criminals solely on the show, Sons of Anarchy. There are legends and lore about bikers from movies to music and throughout American pop culture. The “bad boy” biker narrative has grown over time and though entertaining, it’s resulted in some real (and not so entertaining) consequences.
The Motorcycle Profiling Project (MPP) has been collecting research for two years capturing data and information from motorcyclists who feel they have been profiled by law enforcement for riding a motorcycle or wearing motorcycle-related attire. According to the Motorcycle Profiling Project, 28% of respondents felt they had been profiled. Though the data from 2016 is still being reviewed, early indications show that this number will grow exponentially. The state with the highest reported incidents of profiling? California—which is where Professor Blade was arrested.
Though incidents of profiling certainly are not limited to California. Every single state has reported instances of motorcycle profiling according to the MPP. And while California is the biggest offender, Texas, Florida, Arizona and Pennsylvania rank in the top five.
The state at the bottom of the list with the lowest incidents of reporting? That would be Washington state which passed a law in 2009 requiring law enforcement trainees to undergo training specific to addressing motorcycle profiling and best practices when stopping a motorcyclist.
According to the MPP which spearheaded the Washington law, it’s working. In fact, reported incidents of profiling have been reduced over 90%. Maryland passed a similar law in 2016 and several state legislatures will be considering similar bills in their next sessions.
Even our federal lawmakers have shown an interest in the issue with the House and Senate each introducing legislation (S.Res.154, H.Res.318) addressing motorcycle profiling in May of this year pushed by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.
No one should make the argument that criminal elements don’t exist in the motorcycle world. A quick google search turns up many reports of bikers arrested on drug charges and domestic violence among others.
A 2015 report from the FBI on gangs identifies outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMG) as a concern stating that motorcyclists have evolved from “bar room brawlers” to “sophisticated criminals.” However, according to the report, when looking at gangs and gang members as a whole, 88% are attributed to street gangs, 9.5% to prison gangs and only 2.5% are attributed to motorcycle gangs.
And yet, according to Vox Media, a recent survey showed that 14% of law enforcement officials identified motorcycle gangs first among the most problematic gangs in their jurisdictions; a figure that doesn’t add up when reviewing where motorcycle gangs actually fall on the spectrum.
Professor Blade, whose real name is Flavius A B Akerele III, ultimately plead to a misdemeanor for possession of the decorative whip that hung from his handlebar. But the consequences didn’t stop there. As a result of his misdemeanor, he has lost his right to own a gun for three years—a hefty price to pay for an enthusiast and someone professionally trained in firearms.
And despite the felony charge being dropped, the pending charge affected his background check when he was exploring a new position with a community college. And just recently, he was pulled over yet again upon leaving the local Harley-Davidson dealership where he says that once again, police were set up watching who entered and exited on motorcycles.
So while the “bad boy biker” persona is iconic and the popular image of bikers as degenerates and hooligans makes for good TV, there are practical effects for your average motorcycle rider. When I ask Professor Blade what he wants others to know about his lifestyle and his story he tells me, “This is the kind of harassment I see on a daily basis. Bikers aren’t criminals. They are our country’s nurses, firefighters and teachers. We are being targeted for simply existing.”

AMA National and Regional News–
SALT LAKE CITY – President Donald Trump plans to visit Utah in December to announce a reduction in the size of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. The news, reported by the Salt Lake Tribune, came from the office of U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch. Utah officials favor shrinking the 1.35-million-acre Bears Ears monument to 120,000 acres.
Hatch also said Trump would modify the Grand Staircase to allow coal mining in the Kaiparowits Plateau. At the president’s direction, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke undertook a review of all monuments created by presidential designation, dating to the Clinton Administration, to determine whether the size of the monuments fit the criteria of the American Antiquities Act of 1906. Zinke recommended that some monuments be reduced in size. He did not suggest rescinding any designations.
State News
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California Gov. Jerry Brown signed two bills Oct. 3 that extend the state’s nationally renowned off-highway vehicle recreation program and provide more stability for the program’s future. S.B. 249 extends the operation of the California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Program indefinitely, eliminating a provision that historically had required periodic reauthorization and making the program permanent within state parks. S.B. 159 provides funding for the program.
Without these key pieces of legislation, the program would have ended Dec. 31. The American Motorcyclist Association was part of a broad coalition that defended the OHV program against opponents who sought its demise. The group worked with legislators for months to rework the originally introduced version of S.B. 249 into an acceptable piece of legislation.

AMAMOSA, Iowa – The family of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer John Parham is auctioning some of his personal collection of motorcycles and memorabilia. Parham passed away this past spring.
The collection includes motorcycles, vintage parts, bicycles, and other items. Parham created J&P Cycles and the National Motorcycle Museum. Liquid Asset has been hired to help empty the “back barns,” so the Parham family can focus on running the museum.
Though none of the sale items are museum property, Jill Parham will be donating 20 percent of the net proceeds of the sale to the National Motorcycle Museum. The sale is scheduled for Nov. 14 in Anamosa. The lot list is online at Proxibid.com.
HAMAMATSU, Japan – Suzuki Motor Corp. has decided to suspend its FIM World MXGP Championship and All Japan Motocross activities beginning in 2018. The company said it reviewed its motorcycle operations and decided to “focus on the core business functions and restructuring of our motorcycle business,” which includes suspending MXGP activities.
Suzuki will continue to produce RM-Z250 and 450 series and support those customers around the world. “The company will continue to provide valued products for its customers by utilizing the experiences earned through the racing activities,” a Suzuki release states.
TOKYO – Worldwide production of the Honda Super Cub surpassed 100 million units, according to Honda Motor Co. Ltd. Mass production of the first-generation Super Cub C100 began in August 1958 at the Yamato Plant (which later became the Wako Plant of Saitama Factory). In 1961, based on Honda’s longstanding commitment to “build products close to the customer,” Honda began production of Super Cub C100 in Taiwan using component parts sets from Japan.
Now, Honda produces Super Cub series motorcycles at 16 plants in 15 countries around the world. The Super Cub is sold in more than 160 countries. In 2018, Honda will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Super Cub series sales.
MILWAUKEE – Harley-Davidson Motor Co. has appointed Senior Vice President Michelle Kumbier to the position of chief operating officer.
Kumbier was awarded the AMA Bessie Stringfield Award in 2016. In her new role, Kumbier will be responsible for planning and delivering the company’s global business results, effective immediately, Harley-Davidson said.
She will have oversight of the company’s U.S. and international markets, in addition to her current responsibilities. Kumbier joined Harley-Davidson in 1997 in operations purchasing and has since taken on roles with increasing responsibility in purchasing, strategic planning, new business development and parts and accessories. Most recently, she has served as senior vice president of Product & Operations, leading a team of more than 4,500 employees worldwide.
International News
LONDON – The British army plans to auction six of the motorcycles used by its internationally famous motorcycle corps, the White Helmets, on Nov. 16. The Triumph motorcycles should sell for about $6,600 each, according to estimates from Charterhouse Auctioneers in Sherborne, Dorset. Officially known as the Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team, the White Helmets served as motorcycle dispatch riders. The squad later assumed a ceremonial function that included stunt riding and synchronized routines. The group staged its final performance in September.
ISLAMABAD – The city government wants two helmets sold with each new motorcycle, and all motorcyclists and passengers now must wear helmets while riding. Officials launched an information campaign in September, then started to enforce the mandatory helmet law in October. Police officers also informed motorcycle dealers of the requirement to include two helmets in each motorcycle transaction.

INCREDIBLE— Did you notice this in Megan’s profiling report:
…When looking at gangs and gang members as a whole, 88% of crimes are attributed to street gangs, 9.5% to prison gangs and only 2.5% are attributed to motorcycle gangs.
The obvious answer is that we stand out in the crowd. If we all walked and wore hoodies no one would even notice us. There’s another aspect we stir in society and it’s the freedom element. We look free and unrestricted, that’s why only bikers were buried in helmet laws until recently.
Did you know that all the motorcyclists killed in accidents annually is just over 5,000. It’s actually gone down slightly with the repeal of some helmet laws. So, why pick on bikers? We look foreboding and free. The second most deadly accident in the country is falling, three or four times the number of people killed by guns. It’s twice the number of all the people killed in car accidents, which are around 45,000 a year. Incredible.
So, they pick on us because we’re cool and we represent freedom. What the hell can we do about it? Quick fix it.
I want to ride free forever or die trying.
