ZERO EMISSIONS BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 12, 2018

Hey,

This is not funny. I attended a California Air Resources Board meeting regarding new rule making for motorcycles. (I attended one of these meetings a few years ago.) Every manufacturer of motorcycles was there including Triump sitting beside me and Kawasaki and Honda behind me.

At the last meeting I attended, CARB guys dictated to the crowd. There were no discussions. This time, the mostly obese staff talked about embracing all aspects of the market before making their recommendations in 2020. That’s the good news.

I won’t get into this deep here, but they discussed anti-tampering, competition with the EU and Zero emissions. They talked about moving California to zero emissions by rebates on electric bikes. They want Calfornia riders to be riding 5 million electric bikes by 2025 by executive order from the nice California Governor. I’m not sure of the total number of registered bikes in California by 2025, but that number will be close.

Two points: One is that word Zero again. They use that word in two other regulatory segments, Zero deaths on the highways and Zero tolerance when it comes to drunk driving or drugs. Zero sounds good from one side of the coin, but the other is ultimate control or Zero Freedom. It also has another nefarious side. Zero means the bureaucracy you fund will never go away and grow until it controls everything in its realm. I intend to fight this and CARB’s efforts to mandate motorcycles. I’ll keep you posted.

The other point I hope to make is that motorcycles represent such a small number in the emissions mix we should be left alone. One of the administrators mentioned two areas of emissions they walked away from and I hope to help make motorcycles a third or at least the aftermarket motorcycle industry. But that word Zero doesn’t help. I’m just a grubby biker, so am I missing something?

ANTI-PROFILING STRIDES–Subject: H.Res. 318

I just wanted you to know that Congressman Norcross is now officially a cosponsor on H. Res. 318, which is the House version of the motorcycle anti-profiling bill. Thanks for staying on top of this to make it happen. Norcross joins Rep. Tom MacArthur as cosigners on the bill. Not surprisingly, neither NJ Senator is a cosponsor of the Senate version (S. Res. 154).

COOLBETH AND KLOCK WERKS SCORE PODIUM IN FIRST COMBINED EFFORT– Kenny Coolbeth Jr., Nila Racing and Columbia Avionics, stepped up to the podium with a second-place finish during Sunday’s rain-delayed race at Dixie Speedway in Atlanta.

Joined by new sponsor Klock Werks, of Mitchell, SD, it was a near perfect outing for the #2 rider as he led the pole Saturday. After qualifying first in challenging slick conditions, Coolbeth took the second spot from challengers Jeffrey Carver Jr. and Jarod Vanderkooi.

Sunday’s runner-up result, combined with his Daytona TT eighth-place ride, moves Coolbeth into second in the early-season point standings. Even after his announcement that this will be his final AFT season, the series legend appears both motivated and capable of leaving on a high note aboard his privateer Indian Scout FTR750.

“I’ve devoted my life to this sport and knowing it’s my final season provides a unique level of motivation for me,” said Coolbeth. “I’m armed with a brand new bike that’s running incredibly well, and I’m planning to give it everything I’ve got to finish on top, before I ride off into the sunset.“

As Klock Werks is all about family, racing, and encouraging young riders, we are excited to join forces with Kenny, his wife Jen, and their new son for his final season. Additionally, as an Indian Motorcycle partner, seeing Coolbeth aboard the new FTR750 brings even more excitement.

“Factory teams get a lot of the attention and glory, but privateers are the backbone of this sport, and we couldn’t be prouder to be associated with a rider as respected and decorated as Kenny,” said Brian Klock, President and Visionary of Klock Werks, “On behalf of all of us at Klock Werks, we’re extremely proud to be a part of the final season of one of flat track racing’s most iconic riders.”

NEW POLL: BY NEARLY 2-TO-1, CALIFORNIA MIDTERM VOTERS WANT TO LOWER LEGAL IMMIGRATION–56%-32% Say Less Immigration; 51%-38% Say End Chain Migration;

50%-29% Say Any Amnesty Must Also Mandate E-Verify

A Pulse Opinion Research poll conducted March 21-24 reveals that most California midterm voters want annual legal immigration numbers to be much lower. The poll was funded by NumbersUSA which has launched TV ads in California to raise awareness that current immigration policies are counter to what most voters want.

“We want California voters who favor LESS immigration to know that most of the state’s voters agree with them – as do most voters nationally,” commented Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA. (He was referring to national polls by Harvard-Harris in January and by The Polling Company this month.) “Armed with that knowledge, we hope the people of California will encourage all of their members of Congress, especially Majority Leader McCarthy, to use their leadership to slow immigration so American wages can rise and so employers will more actively recruit from the tens of millions of working-age Americans who aren’t working at all.”

The Pulse Opinion Research survey (with a 3 percentage point margin of error) was of 1,000 likely voters in California’s midterm congressional elections next fall. The first survey question was straight forward: “Current federal policy adds about one million new immigrants with lifetime work permits each year, which is closest to the number of new immigrants the government should be adding each year?”

Voters were offered three options for keeping immigration a million or higher and three options for lower numbers. The response from California voters was: 34% want less than 250,000, 15% say 500,000, 7% say 750,000, 13% say one million, 6% say one and a half million, 13% say more than 2 million, 11% are unsure. Here’s a link to the poll: https://www.numbersusa.com/resource-article/nearly-2-1-margin-californians-support-lower-legal-immigration-levels

Poll results were similar in Wisconsin where NumbersUSA has also launched TV ads in Speaker Paul Ryan’s district. Here’s a link to the Wisconsin poll: https://www.numbersusa.com/resource-article/nearly-2-1-margin-wisconsinites-support-lower-legal-immigration-levels

The TV ad opens on a map of the U.S. flanked by a horizontal axis representing each decade since the 1950s and by a vertical axis representing average annual immigration numbers. A hand draws a line across the map, beginning at the bottom left corner in the 1950s when immigration was 250,000 per year. Then the line quickly slopes upward, reaching its apex today as Congress allows one million new immigrants a year.

As the ad suggests, at no time during that quadrupling of annual immigration have polls found a majority – or even a sizeable minority of Americans – advocating any growth in immigration at all.

“Immigration is an emotionally charged issue. We’ve tried to avoid emotional traps in this ad and simply give viewers the numbers,” concluded Beck. “We think that’s one of the most effective ways to make our case. Because numbers count.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY CRIME STUDIES WORD OF THE DAY–
mea culpa

[mey-uh kuhl-puh, mee-uh]

noun

1.
an acknowledgment of one’s responsibility for a fault or error.
interjection
1.
my fault! (used as an acknowledgment of one’s responsibility).

QUOTES

Facebook was reluctant, however, to issue any mea culpas or action plans with regard to the problem of filter bubbles or Facebook’s noted propensity to serve as a tool for amplifying outrage.

— Nicholas Thompson and Fred Vogelstein, “Inside the Two Years That Shook Facebook–and the World,” Wired, February 12, 2018

ORIGIN

Aging Roman Catholics who were altar boys before the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) can recite from memory the formula from the Confiteor at the beginning of Mass: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, traditionally translated “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” The Latin phrase was first used in the 13th century as an exclamation or interjection. The noun use of mea culpa, “acknowledgment of responsibility or guilt,” arose in the 19th century.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–
Top Climate Scientist: CO2 Model Assumptions ‘Invalid’ Natural Climatic Variations Dominate!

The addition of an esteemed Norwegian climate scientist to the London-based GWPF will help bring some sobriety back to a science that has all too often been immersed in alarmism.

The London-based Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) recently announced Professor Ole Humlum of Norway was joining its Academic Advisory Council.

This brings another persuasive voice to the influential think tank.

Dr. Ole Humlum is a former Professor of Physical Geography at the University Centre in Svalbard, Norway, and Emeritus Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Oslo. He is a member of the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research.

The GWPF appointment is a move that climate science critics say will deliver some much needed sobriety to a science that has too frequently found itself immersed in activism, hysterical projections and alarmism.

In the wake of his appointment, Prof. Humlum answered some questions on climate science posed by NTZ via social media.

Sea level rise projections overblown

Concerning global sea level rise, Prof. Humlum believes the planet will see only “8-15 cm rise by the year 2100”. And though most scientists agree man is warming the planet through CO2 emissions by burning fossil fuels, Prof. Humlum wrote that the figure for CO2 climate sensitivity is completely in dispute.

Natural factors at play, modest cooling ahead
On what has driven the climate change observed over the past 40 years, Prof. Humlum wrote that it goes far beyond just CO2 and that the sun, clouds and oceans have played huge roles. Over the coming decades he thinks the planet will cool, but that “it won’t be dramatic.”

Concerning whether the 20th century warming has led to more weather extremes today, he answered: “No, not according to statistics known by me.”

“Natural climatic variations dominate”

He summarized:

On the global scale natural climatic variations dominate over effects caused by man. Climate models often claim to incorporate natural variations, but this is not correct, as can be shown by statistical analyses. Thus, the argument that only by assuming a large effect of CO2 can climate models reproduce global climate change since 1950 is invalid.”

Bringing expertise to climate science

Prof. Humlum has authored or co-authored some 100 publications on climate related topics. Few scientists are able to claim having such a broad and valuable interdisciplinary knowledge that Professor Humlum possesses. His specialties include:

Glacial- and periglacial geomorphology
Landforms derived from bedrock weathering, with emphasis on rock glaciers
Reconstruction of Quaternary ice sheets, glaciers in the North Atlantic region
Historical and modern climatology of the Arctic and North Atlantic region
The impact of climate on societies the North Atlantic region
Comparison and integration of different climate proxy series
Numerical modelling in geomorphology
Mapping Arctic and Antarctic surface temperature changes
Modelling natural cold-climate geomorphic processes and -hazards
Permafrost and periglacial processes
Physical geography of Svalbard
Snow avalanche risk in Svalbard

BRAND NEW BIKERNET READER COMMENT–Black Bart Returns

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=359

Easyriders and Street Choppers magazine were the only two we were able to find in France in the ‘70s and ‘80s just to dream of the bikes made in the US.

Black Bart has spent a lot of time in my dreams !! At that time H-D were so few and so expensive that only a small number of guys were able to afford these bikes – Triumph 650 and 500 were a lot cheaper with parts from UK and forget about customizing a Honda!! Only parts available were clipons and fairings!

Well, adios mister Carlini (even if your are long gone) you made me dream a lot (I am 66 now and still riding and reading Bikernet)

Good thing your son is still in the business.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS WIDE OPEN–A day without sunshine is like, well, night.

A priest and a rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane. After a while, the priest turned to the rabbi and asked: “Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?

The rabbi responded: “Yes, that is still one of our beliefs.”

The priest then asked: “Have you ever eaten pork?” To which the rabbi replied: “Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich.”

The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading. A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest: “Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?”

The priest replied: “Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith.”

The rabbi then asked him: “Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?”

The priest replied: “Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith.”

The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silently thinking for about five minutes. Finally, the rabbi said: “Beats a ham sandwich, doesn’t it?”

GUN NUT REPORT–Tennessee college senior defends posing for graduation picture with gun in her waistband

A Tennessee college senior is sticking to her guns after posting a graduation photo in which she stares wistfully off-camera while lifting her “Women for Trump” T-shirt to expose a handgun in her waistband.

Despite receiving what she called a surprising “amount of hate” on social media, Brenna Spencer, 22, says she has no regrets.

“I know the Tennessee state gun codes. … I carry everywhere that I’m allowed to carry,” the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga student said in an interview.

On Twitter, where Spencer’s profile states that “political correctness offends me,” she posted the provocative photo with the caption “I don’t take normal college graduation photos …”

The post quickly went viral, with some complimenting the shoot and others calling it reckless.

One woman, Victoria Silva, alerted the police in an apparent attempt to have Spencer arrested.

@ChattanoogaPD would you like to give us your two cents? Per the thread, this young female is taking a photo w/a firearm, in an area w/a posted “no-weapons” policy. This showboating behavior is irresponsible, reckless, & potentially dangerous.

Signed,
A concerned citizen ??

— Victoria Silva

The photo was reportedly taken outside the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, which bans firearms inside.

Others were supportive — and offered some tips to the soon-to-be-grad.

“Good job supporting second amendment, but you should have a proper holster that holds the weapon securely and fully protects the trigger guard,” a Twitter user wrote in response to the photo.

RACE NEWS–Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Cianciarulo Takes Over Second in Western Regional Championship

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo and Joey Savatgy were tasked to battle nature as the skies stayed open all day in Seattle, leaving the track inside CenturyLink Field a complete mess. Cianciarulo was able to make his way through the pack to finish on the podium in third, while Savatgy had to overcome a tip over into a mud pile to finish 12th. Cianciarulo’s podium pushed him ahead of his teammate to take over second in the point standings, sitting 17 points back with two rounds to go.

With only one practice to get acquainted with the track, Cianciarulo did well in his heat before ultimately getting stuck in the mud. He went on to win the LCQ and when the riders lined up for the main event, they were only facing eight minutes plus one lap instead of the usual 15 minutes plus one lap. Doing what he could to keep his bike upright, Cianciarulo settled into 10th on the start. He chose his lines wisely and as other riders battled the conditions, Cianciarulo made his move to the front, sliding into third with two laps to go.

“I really want to get my first win of the season, but in a night like tonight I’ll take a podium,” said Cianciarulo. “We get another couple weeks off and my goal is to finish strong. We’re 17 points back and we’ll do everything we can to be in contention at the end.”

The race conditions proved unpredictable over and over with Savatgy being on the tough end of the battle once the main event hit. He got out to a great start in second, but tipped over in between the lanes of the track. The accumulated mud ate his bike up and it took a lot of time to get going again. He didn’t give up and was able to score a 12th when the race was all said and done.

“I put myself in good position on the start, but a little mistake turned into a big one with those track conditions,” said Savatgy. “I didn’t want to give up and tried to make up as many positions as possible in the shortened race. Anything can happen so we won’t give up until the checkered flag in Vegas.”

GOVERNMENT NEWS ABOUT–Social Security Checks

A woman died at age 65. She paid into the system for almost 50 years and collected NOTHING?
Keep in mind all the people that die every year that were paying into the system and got nothing!

And these governmental morons mismanaged the money and stole from the system, so that it’s now going broke.

BEAUTIFUL! and they have the audacity to call today’s seniors “vultures” in an attempt to cover their ineptitude. DISGRACEFUL!

The real reason for renaming our Social Security payments is so the government can claim that all those social security recipients are receiving entitlements thus putting them in the same case as welfare, food stamp recipients.

THIS IS WORTH THE FEW MINUTES IT TAKES TO READ AND DIGEST!
F.Y.I. By changing the name of SS contributions it gives them a means to refute this program in the future.

It’s free money for the government to spend under this guise.

The Social Security check is now (or soon will be) referred to as a *Federal Benefit Payment*?

The government is now referring to our Social Security checks as a “Federal
Benefit Payment.”

This isn’t a benefit. It is OUR money paid out of OUR earned income! Not only did/do we all contribute to Social Security but our employers did/do too. It totaled 15% of our income before taxes.

If you averaged $30K per year over your working life, that’s close to $180,000 invested in Social Security.

If you calculate the future value of your monthly investment in social security ($375/month, including both you and your employers contributions) at a meager 1% interest rate compounded monthly, after 40 years of working you’d have more than $1.3+ million dollars saved!

This is your personal investment. Upon retirement, if you took out only 3% per year, you’d receive $39,318 per year, or $3,277 per month.

That’s almost three times more than today’s average Social Security benefit of $1,230 per month, according to the Social Security Administration. (Google it – it’s a fact). And your retirement fund would last more than 33 years (until you’re 98 if you retire at age 65)!

I can only imagine how much better most average-income people could live in retirement if our government had just invested our money in low-risk interest-earning accounts.

Instead, the folks in Washington pulled off a bigger *Ponzi scheme* than Bernie Madoff ever did. (Lyndon Johnson)

They took our money and used it elsewhere. They forgot (oh yes, they knew) that it was OUR money they were taking. They didn’t have a referendum to ask us if we wanted to lend the money to them. And they didn’t pay interest on the debt they assumed. And recently they’ve told us that the money won’t support us for very much longer. (Isn’t it funny that they NEVER say this about welfare payments?)

But is it our fault they misused our investments? And now, to add insult to injury, they’re calling it a *benefit*, as if we never worked to earn every penny of it.
Just because they borrowed the money, doesn’t mean that our investments were a charity!

Let’s take a stand. We have earned our right to Social Security and Medicare.

Demand that our legislators bring some sense into our government.

Find a way to keep Social Security and Medicare going for the sake of that 92% of our population who need it.

Then call it what it is: Our Earned Retirement Income.

IRWINDALE RACING NEWS–
IRWINDALE DRAGSTRIP ADDS
BURN-OUT/DONUT BOX

With all of the news coverage of illegal street racing we want to make sure that everyone in the media understands that Irwindale Dragstrip has been offering an alternative to that often deadly activity since 2001; and have literally seen thousands of individuals (drivers, passengers, and spectators) enjoy spirited car/speed events in comfort and safety. And the same goes for the tens of thousands of fans who’ve cheered them all on from the sidelines.

The every-Thursday-night* Drag Races at Irwindale are much more than just races, they’re also relaxed social events where drivers can take advantage of the full capacities of their cars, motorcycles, and light trucks without endangering themselves or others and where fans PAY MONEY to watch them perform.

Over the years we’ve been told by many of our friends and partners in law enforcement that our efforts do make a difference on the streets and that’s why we (just last week) opened what we think may be the first-ever organized, legal burn-out/donut “box” in the country. This is a “sideshow” that’s safe and sizzling.

AND … YOU’RE INVITED TO BRING YOUR
CAMERAS AND NOTE PADS
TO SEE IT IN ACTION TOMORROW NIGHT
APRIL 12 FROM 6 TO 9PM ON SITE AT IRWINDALE

We gave the area a fun acronym to match the letters calling it: “Burn-Out-Xperience” and soft-opened last Thursday night, April 5 with only social media mention. We were more than pleasantly surprised by the turnout of drivers and fans.

The acceptance of this place (the nickname “The Box” already seems to already be in play) to really have fun and exercise one’s car in safety and in front of a crowd (who are busy not looking over their shoulders for the “cops”) was more than amazing.

Again, like our Street Legal Drag Strip (the only weekly operating drag strip in LA, Orange, Riverside, and Ventura counties) this is a good news story that will see your reporters having something positive to say about young people and fast cars.

And, perhaps, inform a few more about the opportunity before they become gristly statistics.

We fully understand that we can’t stop all the stupid, illegal (often lethal) stuff that people do with cars. But we also know that we’ve taken a bite out of that terrible toll.

PLEASE JOIN US TOMORROW!

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN FOR LUNCH–An elderly golfer comes in after a good round of golf at the new course and heads straight to the bar/restaurant area of the club house. As he passes through the swinging doors, he spots a sign hanging over the bar that reads:

COLD BEER: $5.00
HAMBURGER: $10.00
CHEESEBURGER: $15.50
CHICKEN SANDWICH: $18.50
HAND JOB: $250.00

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary money, the old golfer walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled golfers.

She glides down behind the bar to the old golfer. “Yes?” she inquires with a wide, knowing smile. “May I help you sir?”

The old golfer leans over the bar and whispers, “I was wondering young lady, are you the one who gives the hand-jobs around here?” She looks into his wrinkled eyes and with a wide smile purrs, “Yes sir, I sure am.”

The old golfer leans in even closer and into her left ear says softly, “Well then, be sure to wash your hands real good, because I want a cheeseburger.”

LATEST FROM LOWBROW–KR Style Bolt-On Hardtails for Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportsters

Inspired by the early Harley-Davidson looped KR style race frames, the KR Style Bolt-On Hardtail from Lowbrow Customs fits stock front frame sections on Sportsters from 1967 to 1978. Harley-Davidson produced the KR factory race bike in 1952, and it dominated the track until production ended in 1968. Until now, KR style looped hardtail frames were unavailable.

Lowbrow Customs is known for producing original, high-quality custom motorcycle parts. The KR Style hardtail is no exception. It accepts the stock rear wheel, axle and brake, and includes axle adjusters.

The unique style and simplicity of installation provide a perfect base for that Ironhead Sportster bobber, chopper or race bike build. Each frame is hand-made from 1″ x .125″ wall crew tubing with 5/16″ thick axle plates and designed to bolt right up to your frame with ease.

Lowbrow KR hardtails are approximately 4-inch stretch over stock wheelbase and 2-inch drop (2 inches lower than stock). Each hardtail frame section is proudly made in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Lowbrow KR Style Bolt-On Hardtails are $324.95, are in stock and ship immediately.

A CLASSIC BELL FROM A READER–
I delivered the Bonnie Belle token to you because you had knowledge of the passing of the bell. The story as I know it is this: A marine biker gave a bell to another marine biker, whom gave it to me.

Natcho told me that I received it because I was from the old school. I had no idea about the tradition or the significance of the bell. The next chapter is now yours.

I figured you knew so you deserved it but instead of just a plain old bell, I spruced it up a little.

I figured you could use it to call in the troops when you go to Bonneville. Use in good health always. I will take you up on visiting our brother Jack someday.

WOW, WHAT A DAY—My grandson just returned from Europe with his tattoo artist girlfriend, Em. She’s pictured below in the Bikernet Shop.

Frankie came over to pick up his Dyna. He needs to clean it up so Markus can shoot it for a feature on Bikernet. He encountered a lesson for all builder/riders. First, if you have a problem with your bike, it’s usually something you just messed with.

He heard a clunk and then a terrible screeching noise. He thought it came from the primary, but he kept riding the bike. That’s not good. If you encounter an issue deal with it immediately, before real damage occurs. Frank finally removed his inner primary and discovered a severely loose compensator nut.

I coached him over the phone and he cleaned, inspected and corrected it. Fortunately, no major problems.

We’ve been cruising in a Vanderhall Venice Trike and wondering about taking it to Sturgis. Test ride one if you get a chance.

Next week I should meet with Larry Settles about his feature. We will turn the Vanderhall story over to Quick Throttle Magazine staff. I will work on another Barnett Clutch Tech. If you have clutch issues, these are the guys to see. I’m going to start a fiction piece around the Zero concept.

It’s time to start on the next Cycle Source World News column, and I should think about the next Cantina Episode. It’s time.

It’s never dull around here. I’m hoping the group at the Climate Depot will help me with California.

Need to ride free Forever, Goddammit!
