Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson and Valley Cycle Center to host First Annual Honor Ride and Weekend of Remembrance– Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson and Valley Cycle Center will be the host location for the First Annual Honor Ride and Weekend of Remembrance, August 10th – 13th, 2012. The weekend event benefits the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (“NLEOMF”) and upcoming Law Enforcement Museum.
Founded in 1984, the NLEOMF is dedicated to honoring and remembering the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in the United States. A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Washington, DC, the Memorial Fund built and continues to maintain the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and recently launched a campaign to build the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum, adjacent to the Memorial in Washington, DC. Scheduled to open in 2013, the Museum will tell the story of American law enforcement through exhibits, collections, research and education.
The Honor Ride fundraising and awareness event will feature all makes of motorcycles and motorcycle-related products and services. Entertainment will include local bands, law enforcement field demonstrations and exhibits, motorcycle drill team demonstrations, contests, games, 50/50, food, children’s play area and more. The event will conclude on Sunday, August 12th, after a police-escorted ride to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC for a brief ceremony with guest speakers and sponsor check presentations. “This is an event created for the law enforcement community, their families, friends and all citizens, motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists, to show support for those who support us 24/7 in our nation, state, city, community and back yard,” said Honor Ride Co-chair, Caroline Fellman. “Statistics over the past 10 years show that, on average, one law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty every 53 hours or 164 per year. There were 163 law enforcement officers killed in 2011. That’s a lot of motivation to show your support.”

Novato police to conduct motorcycle safety enforcement– The Novato Police Department will conduct specialized motorcycle safety enforcement Saturday in an effort to target dangerous riders and careless drivers.
Officers will patrol areas popular with motorcyclists and will look for motorcyclists under the influence of drugs or alcohol and any traffic violations that could lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Ride in Peace: Florida Harley dealer Bob Fletcher— The dealership network lost a veteran this past week when longtime Harley-Davidson dealership owner Bob Fletcher died June 9. He was 90. A memorial ride will start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Fletcher’s Harley-Davidson, 16485 U.S. 19 N. in Clearwater, Fla. The ride starts at noon from Fletcher’s and ends at Anona United Methodist Church, 13233 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, for a 1 p.m.memorial service and 2 p.m. celebration of life.
Fletcher founded his namesake Harley-Davidson dealership in 1964 in Clearwater, Fla. But his love affair with motorcycles started when he was a teenager in Harvard, Ill. At 19 he bought a 1929 Harley JD for $50. In the army, he trained other servicemen to ride. Soon after coming home from the service, Fletcher and a partner opened Bob’s Harley-Davidson in Illinois.
Fletcher retired in 1986 and turned the dealership over to his daughters, Laura Fletcher-Taylor, Peggy McFarland and Sherry Conder, who redecorated the store to make it friendlier than Harley’s then-rebellious image. The store eventually grew to 30,000 square feet and became a multi-winning Dealernews Top 100 dealership.
“It used to be, when people would say ‘Harley-Davidson’ they would think of biker gangs and the rough and tough,” Fletcher-Taylor, who is now general manager, told the newspaper. “Now it’s more of a privilege to own a Harley-Davidson because you own a piece of American history.”

Another huge week just blew by with major progress and good news galore.
First day of summer just blew by us like we’re standin still, with August looming just around the corner. The Bikernet area weather forecast, hot, muggy, dark, followed by periods of sunlight during the day providing the clouds don’t roll in. On with the news.
The call to Daytona Twin Tech early Monday revealed a mysteriously faulty unit, NO Sweat, said the lead Tech and road tester, a new unit is on the way let us know the results. My Dyna has ran a Twin tech for over 100,000 trouble free, never-missed-a-beat or hiccuped along the way, rain, sleet, snow, damned hot and damned cold, drag strips, Bonneville, salty and grimy. The new unit shipped to San Jose for installation and a few happy highway miles. Plans are to end up in San Jose around the 28th, pick up my hot rod and hit the Corbin event on the 30th.
Rick Tedder, master fabricator, welder, machinist, racer, etc. is knockin our 5-Ball Racing Team project out of the park. The seat/tail section is moving along nearing final fit, sub frame, then we deliver the seat pan to Saddleman for a long distance seat. Our number one priority is safety, then proven function.

Guy Caputo from Tiger Racing shipped a front fender reputed and backed up with time slips, somewhere, to have a 3 to 5 mph advantage over the stock Busa offering. Thanks Guy we’ll do our best to put it to the ultimate test, the big white dyno. Looks damned fast to the motley crew of hooligans involved in this insane project? Insane? No Way……That would be crazy.
Turbo Doc in Ogden, UT received and rebuild the Series 66 Aerocharger the same day, this week.
The first time we fired the Dyno with the Turbo, many moons past, a dingle-berry or a piece of slag must have passed through the turbine damaging the blades from day one. With damaged blades the bike still performed like a rocket. This afternoon a complete re-blade, unit re-clocked and inspected, then hit the UPS truck headed for the workshop in Salem. The air plenum is nearing the hit list, with the exhaust manifold nearly ready for a thorough cleaning, then Ceramic coating inside and out. No more loose pieces rattling through the turbine.
Shipped my Vanson leathers to the factory for a tune up. Still fit like a glove but will need new snaps (totally rusted), sponsor patches, etc.
Goal is to tag and title the Raycer the first week of July, just enough time to ride, tune, ride, tune, tear down and detail, reassemble and prepare for the Salt, August 25-30. Hang on!

Factory bikes are built on assembly lines after millions of dollars of research and development. Building processes have been tested, clearances double and triple checked. The worker on the assembly line is only responsible for their few parts that are installed at their station. The guy who installs a swingarm is all he does day in and day out. He has jigs to line everything up, automatic torqueing impacts, bolts are pre-loc-tited. Four or five easy steps that are repeated bike after bike. He doesn’t have to worry if the spokes are tightened properly or that the front forks have proper swing. He is only concerned with the swingarm. It is a process refined to ensure each and every bike is consistently the same.
A custom bike has no blueprint, no plan. It is a collection of parts that have come together, some times through modification to create a new bike. I’m confident in my ability. I have to be or I wouldn’t have started building and modifying bikes to begin with. But I am human. Snow White’s first trip is for gas and down to my work to cut down the licence plate on the shear so it will fit in the bracket. Those first few blocks are taxing. Is the bike tracking true, is there bearing bind, did I forget any bolts. As my left leg is jerked forward and up when I pull away from the first traffic light my shredded pant leg is a quick reminder that this bike has an open primary. I stop at the gas station a few blocks from my house and top up the gas tanks and give the bike a quick look over. The 120 hp engine runs smooth and the six speed, other then an elusive neutral, shifts properly. Back home I reluctantly push her back into the garage. The only causality is the licence plate bracket bolts have vibrated loose – I shouldn’t have assumed the manufacture used loc-tite on the pre-assembled part. That’s it. Her first dance. She will get a check over and maybe a wash before her first twelve mile run on the highway. While a part of me envies the guy who can throw his leg over his new ’12 ElectraGlide and ride he will never understand the rush of excitement I get knowing that this, this machine that was only once a collection of random parts, this machine I trust to not self destruct and take me with it, was built by me, and me alone. I take my own life and put it into Snow White’s hands and hope she doesn’t break my heart.

EASYRIDERS CAFÉ AND SALOON HAS A NEW NAME– According to Rick Krone, partner slash owner of the Easyriders Saloon and café located in Sturgis, South, the successful restaurant now has a new name. 2012 CANNONBALL RUN II ANNOUNCED– Sturgis, South Dakota, June 19, 2012 – Lonnie Isam, Jr., owner of Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, South Dakota, and promoter of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run II announced today that the historic transcontinental event scheduled for 17 days in September has its roster full and the route is set. Though held on U.S soil, the 2012 iteration is for all intents and purposes, a worldwide event.
According to Isam, the endurance ride for pre-1930 antique motorcycles will get underway in Newburgh, NY on Friday, September 7 and will include riders from across the globe. With 77 entries from 24 states, 11 countries and 4 continents, this historic run will indeed be watched by the world as motorcycles of all marquis tackle an arduous route across America. A week into travel, riders will have a day of rest, repairs, and some festivities in the well-known town of Sturgis, SD on September 14. After a total of some 4,000 miles, the ride is slated to conclude on Sunday, September 23 in San Francisco, CA.
During the MCR event, participants will ride vintage pre-1930 motorcycles such, Henderson, Indian, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, Rudge, JAP, Excelsior, BSA, Sunbeam and others. According to Isam, the event is not a race but will be a timed test of both the riders’ endurance and the roadworthiness of their respective machines as they navigate non-Interstate roads across the United States.
“This route is going to be a challenge, and the bikes from the 1920s really don’t get ridden that much so there will still be some rebuilding going on along the run,” Isam said. We’ll cover some of the best riding areas in the country. We really couldn’t have done this route with the older bikes, but it is still going to be a difficult trip. We’ll have long days and tough terrain, I suspect that even the most seasoned rider will find this run challenging.”
Isam said that, while organizers and MCR Course Master John Classen are still working out the final details of some of the stops, it’s clear that the first week of the event will be grueling as riders make their way along the initial miles from New York to Sturgis. Throughout the run, according to Classen, the spectacular scenery will awe participants as they pilot their ancient machines along several picturesque national parks, monuments, memorials and forests.
Four museums are on the route and will be visited as well. The Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, New York, the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, and the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo, South Dakota will all play host to the riders as they wind their way towards the Golden State.
The 2012 Motorcycle Cannonball Run’s roster includes several notable faces such as artist Scott Jacobs, writer Paul d’Orleans and world traveling rider personality Doug Wothke. The field will also include 16 past participants. Famous bronze sculptor Jeff Decker, builder Shinya Kimura, and AMCA’s Matt Olsen are among the colorful returning riders as well as Mike Vils, Steve Barber and several others. Each has their own amazing story to tell and is anxious to tackle this year’s route through 11 states to finish by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. In a letter to union members, the national president, Jon Hunt-Sharman, said the federal government had failed to act on a promise to introduce national legislation that would criminalise outlaw motorcycle gangs, allow authorities to seize bikies’ assets, and provide for intelligence to be shared by states.
The gangs, ”utilising their vast and suspicious ‘unexplained wealth’, have been able to successfully challenge various state laws in the High Court and thereby make a mockery of our legal system”, Mr Hunt-Sharman writes.
”Whilst [they] get folk hero status (at least in their own minds), police are demoralised, having to use antiquated legislation to combat these criminals, with the criminals getting away with murder.
”[The gangs] operate without regard to state or national borders. We need to ensure that there are nationally consistent laws, and this can only occur through leadership from the Gillard Federal government.”
A spokeswoman for the Home Affairs Minister, Jason Clare, said the government had tried to gain agreement for national legislation, but had been stymied by the states. ”We have asked the states to refer the power to us to introduce national anti-gang laws and give outlaw motorcycle gangs nowhere to hide,” she said. ”Unfortunately the states rejected our offer in April – but it still stands.”
However, a spokesman for Victorian Attorney-General, Robert Clark, disputed this, claiming that the federal Attorney-General had raised no objections to plans by some states to enact uniform state-based laws, rather than federal legislation.
The threat posed by bikies has been thrown into sharp relief by recent public explosions of violence in a number of states.
In 2009, a Hells Angel associate was beaten to death at Sydney Airport in front of onlookers during a vicious brawl between Hells Angels and Comancheros.
Sydney has been rocked by a spate of drive-by shootings, allegedly triggered by a feud between the Hells Angels and the Nomads, while late last year in Melbourne, Bandidos enforcer Toby Mitchell was shot five times in a busy Brunswick street at 4.30pm.
The South Australian and NSW governments have already had anti-bikie laws struck down by the High Court on the grounds that they are unconstitutional. Queensland police have used new laws to apply to have the Finks declared a criminal organization.
